  • CBI Tournament: 1st Rd, just ZERO time to get across the street for Lineups...I'll try and be brief

    Boston University at Oregon State

STILL Looking at this Gm from every conceivable angle
    VERY DIFFICULT to assess;
More like 'Apples to Hammers' than 'Apples to Oranges'

    PAC-10 v AMERICA EAST

    Contrasting Styles entirely

Terriers': STARKLY DIFF to what we've been accustomed at B.U.
1ST YR HC Patrick Chambers brought
    'Nova-style, WIDE-OPEN, Secondary-Break,
    Full-Ct Weave Offense-First Gm to Boston U,
    IT IS vastly different from Decade-PLUS Terrier-Ball;
    The Meat-Grinder, D-First scheme
    BU brought for...well, for Freaking-Ever

BOS U looks like solid tm, w/ALL L'S to Win Tms

YET, B.U. only 3 WIN TMS TTL, All Hm or Neu
BU was 3-13 vs Winning Tms

NE in OT (when Huskies in 0-7 slump)
    Maine (Conf)
Stony Brk (Conf Tourney, avenging Early Hm-L)

Seeing a common Boston U 'Fact' much of the day:

The Beavers have the advantage of playing this game at hm
but BU seems to be the better of these two teams
Will score what is probably considered a mild upset tonight.
    (CBB News, The Sports Network)

    Hmm.  BU is BETTER?

    Boston U: 4th America-East

    PAC-10 'Down - yet still #6 of 33 Div-1 Conf Power Rank
    A-East is #26
Terriers were 1-5 Rg Sea v Tms above them
    (2-6 after Cnf Trn)

Bos 0-3 All Yr v #2 Rg Sea & Cnf Camp, Vrmnt
Bos 0-2 Seas v Rg Chmp, Stny Brk
(BU finally broke thru, Neu Ct v Stny Bk, Cnf Trn)
    Bos 1-1 v Maine

    Boston U not bad Tm
Just much shakier than the high powered shooting tm they are cast as

ORE ST 1-3-1 is playing better
In Beavers' BTB Losses to UW
    1st Match-up, beavers allowed Dawgs +9 Pts / RE-MATCH, -15
Dawgs (#1 Tempo Tm in NCAA Tourn)
Beavers are highly familiar w/Terriers methodology,
    UW is simular in Tempo
    (#10: 74.3 Poss/Gm)
    Bos U (#50: 70.2 Poss/Gm)

There are major differences that could spell doom for Ore St
BU staggering 40.5% of FG ATT are from Deep
    (Top 8% D-1 Tms)
    BU Makes 36% Threes
    (Top 26%)

Beaver simply haven't played enough tms that do this
PAC-10 all but 2 tms, LOW HALF of D-1 3PA/A
THOSE 2 TMs that DID have HI 3PA/A,
    Az St (#14) & Stan (#34)
    Uncustomary HIGH Success vs Beavers:
    Stan beat Beavers by 24 & 10
Az St beat Beavers by 9 & 10
Thus: Ore St 0-4 & 1-3 ATS vs +3PA/A Tms

FT's could make Diff, also - yet there's a BIG Cancel out Factor:
BU is frighteningly THIN: Lowest 4% of Bench Min
Beavers draw many fouls (Top 20%)
Beavers do Not PUT Tms on Line (Top 12%)

BU is very good at Line: 73%
Ore St isn't, but getting better: 67.1

Beavers big Achilles Heel is T-Overs
BU is billed as decent Def tm, doesn't create T-O

Amazing stats are that BU is VERY GOOD at 3% and FT%
    VERY POOR at 2%, 33rd WORST:  43.5
This Translates into very poor eFG%: 47.7%

As GOOD AS BEAVERS D is,
I like them to create a lot of T-Overs
Yet BU to keep this close

I'm running out of time w/this disjointed thread:
Unusual Play - but I LOVE the OVER now at 122
IF this was in DD Line, I'd be w/BU
As it stands, with such a wild match-up, I'm going smallish:

    1.5 UNIT:
BOSTON U at OREGON STATE | OVER 122
    (Sportsbook)

    0.5 UNIT | 5 PT TEASER
BOSTON U +12 at OREGON STATE
    PACIFIC +6 at LOYOLA-MARYMOUNT

BU travel went entirely smooth.  TERRIERS' actually strolled past my office window at about 10:15 AM this Morning in the 65F Sun in their All-Red Get-ups; couldn't miss em' if I tried....they look very thin.

  • Jeeze....just got back from the MESS at Gill....sure, I'm pleased about another 2-0 Nite...yet ...Eye-CARUMBA....The Beavers were absolutely GASSED from FINALS....didn't even have their SPIRITUAL LEADER, Calvin Hampton - who Graduated Early and Bailed for his Md Home after his Last Final THIS MORNING (WISH I'd have known this before stepping into 3rd Floor Valley (Media Rm) when I was told about it.  ALSO, seeing Joe Burton & Angus Brandt eating PIZZA w/Trainer 15 MIN before Tip was also another reason to bring the lappy w/me in the future!  Used to be able to get in here w/ the 'Crackberry' w/o Java, but can't figure it out lately....

EVERY DAY should be this smooth; SQUEAKED OUT the BU at Ore St OVER 122 Number (w/52 PTS to spare)....and knocked down the Small Teaser for second consecutive 2-0 day; 4-0 Postseason start, is just how to start Tourney Wk 1.

YET....as I said, I'm a little queazy after that NON-effort by the Beavers on top of Oregon Coach Ernie Kent ousting down the Road has left a sour taste, and it's just not a great end to 09/10 Season for either D-1 Program in the Valley.

I know this is NOT really the Venue or Atmosphere for the following Rant - but I just hafta purge it anyway (I'm probably a little too close - w/good friends in several coaching circles to be remotely objective, esp having looked up to Ernie Kent for so long, also having seen & heard Ernie articulate, among so many other profoundly intricate theories, the controlled FURY of the OREGON-version of The Inside-Out, 3-Ball Gm & EXACTLY, PRECISELY how to create a Catch-&-Shoot Opportunity - or Crease for 'a Good-Look', at several Coaching Camps & Clinics...ect)

The University of Oregon Athletic Dept is now separated from ONE of the FIRST-CLASS MEN in College Athletics after clipping string between Ernie Kent and the Oregon Men's Basketball.  I'm not sure many folks outside of NW are FULLY aware sometimes just how much ERNIE KENT accomplished in Eugene in 13 Yrs; taking a floundering, going-nowhere program, playing in a crumbling, Crackerbox Gym which previous Coaches Haney, Monson & Green cursed.  On Kent's Watch, Duck Basketball was Reborn - Orchestrated thru ELECTRIFYING "Fire-n-Ice", Running-Gunning, Lightning-Yellow in a Bottle, brand of winning Basketball; The "Pit-Crew" symbolized the rebirth of THE PIT as a DREADFUL venue for visiting teams' to have to play; AND MOST NOTABLY, Ernie Kent took his High-flying Ducks, & "Luke & Luke" Show DEEP into NCAA Big Dance; specifically - kent Got OREGON into The ELITE 8; TWICE!  As Beaver Fan, I was ...and, truthfully, AM STILL more than a little envious.  Thru it all, Kent was always Mr. DUCK, Oregon Alumnus.  Mr Flat-Top, Square-Jaw, Modest-to-a-Fault "Earnest-K" found his own unique way to EMBRACE the Pit and carve out his own signature brand of ball - very truly, Duck Basketball - as much as I hate to keep polishing the rival apple, had to be fun as HELL to Play w/Kent running the show.  I sincerely believe Ernie will RAPIDLY ascend to the stature of HIS Coach; last revered Oregon Coach Dick Harter; Whom Kent emulated as a Card-Carrying Disciple and kamikaze Kid of Legendary 70's Ducks; Role Playing / Floor-Burns-as-Badges-of-Honor, group of Defensive, Selfless basketball players.  Kent was clearly outed before his time - I didn't fully realize it till we were abruptly all stopped (here in Mid-Willamette Valley coaching Membership) and witness Ernie Kent's "Statement of Departure", which was genuinely disturbing & painfully heartbreaking to see - esp to anyone w/the good fortune & pleasure of crossing paths w/Kent, or anyone who has done ANY significant Hoops Coaching in State/Region, for that matter.

"Earnest K" stood up, in his Glass-Half-Full, GENUINE enthusiastic manner, and took the terrain he finds himself deployed like the MAN that he is.  I know he's going to be going to be involved w/more Media-Based Ventures, which seems to be ideal fit for his polished, energetic personally.   having heard Ernie Articulate the Controlled FURY of his version of the Inside-Out Gm and EXACTLY, PRECISELY how to create a crease for 'Good-Look' at several Coaching Clinics...ect.

I know Oregon, 'Must get A Big-Name-Guy to Open New Arena, and FILL SEATS', but I'd seriously put the 'Grass-is-Greener', Shoulda-Kept-Ernie-After-All, Majority of Duck-Fan-Base will generally REGRET THIS MOVE in EXACTLY Five Years at EVEN-MONEY....IF/WHEN they GET THEIR Guy or not (Mark Few).

    Just my two c.

    Have a GREAT TOURNEY, everyone!
