Tonight's play comes from the NCAA Tournament play-in game:
WINTHROP / ARK PINE BLUFF UNDER 113 (1 Unit)
Let's be honest tonight's game will be the biggest stage these two teams will have played on this season and I definitely expect nerves should come into play atleast at the start. Winthrop has danced before (9th trip) so I expect them to be a little more composed than Bluff, who will be making their first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. While neither of these teams score the basketball at will (Winthrop averages 62/gm compared to Bluff's 64/gm), they both play at a controlled pace and look to beat their opponent on the defensive side of the ball. Winthrop plays an especially aggressive style defense that looks to get into the head's of their opponents and cause as many turnovers as possible. The Eagles have held their opponents to just 61/gm this season, while UAPB holds their foes to 64/gm.
As I mentioned, these teams struggle to score the basketball as they are the two worst shooting teams in the field and make around 35% of their field goals. From beyond the arc, Winthrop hits only 25% of their 3's compared to Bluff's 30%. For a team like UAPB who turns the ball over 17 times a game, I don't expect this to end well for the Golden Lions as Winthrop thrives on forcing turnovers as I mentioned previously.
This sets up for a low scoring game, as both teams have shown difficulty scoring throughout the season. Having been to the dance previously, Winthrop has gone UNDER in their last four in the NCAA Tournament and have gone UNDER in 15 of their last 18 following a SU win. When playing on neutral sites, Winthrop has gone UNDER in 14 of their last 17 and 20-8 below the total in their last 28. With a total opening at 115 and now down to 113, I expect this one to be low scoring and if I had to take a side, I would expect Winthrop's defense to force enough turnovers to give them the opportunity to meet Duke later this week.
