  • Last week VR put a tweet out about how it's going to be a great 2012. He said (paraphrasing)" just stick to the rules" or " just follow the rules".

My question is : Is their something like a Top 10 rules that you always follow?

I have been thinking about that statement. I have a list that i follow for my work. I am sales rep. I have had the same list for 20 yrs as it has served me well and kept my CREDIBILITY in tact. I have kept several of the same customer's for the entire time. It's on a peg board in my office. I see it everyday before I head out to see customer's.

    So is there a list that capper's, gambler's, pro's better's use?

Here's what i came up with so far:

    1. Bankroll management

    2. Discipline

    3. Educate myself with all quality materials I can find concerning betting.

    4. Ask questions? There are no dumb questions only dumb bets.

    5. Never take a road team laying chalk in the NBA or CBB.

(1 exception here: when Pool has a 5-6-7 * SEMO road chalk pick. Only 1/4 unit. $50)

    6. Never get emotionally involved with a particular team.

    7. Have at least 3 books to shop lines.

    8. Hide my bankroll from my wife. HAHA. I am serious on this point.

    9. Only readjust my 2% after the Superbowl. Several reasons for that. All personnal.

    10. GRIND, GRIND, GRIND.

Please chim in and let me know if there is such a list. I hope to add more to my list as I continue to learn.

    News rules added 1-18-12.

     11. Never tease NBA or CBB! Never!

    12. Dont bet while Im drinking. ( I havent done this all year)

    MORE TO COME.

    Rule #1. Bankroll Management!

    Rule #2. Discipline!

  • Follow these rules would put you ahead of 90% of bettors right out of the gate.

What I find particularly interesting is the idea that it's important to decide HOW to learn about something, even before the learning begins . . .

  • Interesting point. How to learn? I had always thought of sites like this as someone trying to sell me snake oil. You know " buy my triple dime play and I'll show you how to make $$$". I stalked this site for a month before i joined as I found it have CREDIBILTY! There are so many free educational oppurtunities here. I am smarter and have the 1st positive bankroll in 4 yrs.

  • All great points except #5.  While laying points on the road is many times the "square side", you should never blindly disregard an entire subset.

You want a handicapping tip?  Spend as much time getting a good number as you do researching games. Depositing/withdrawing/depositing/withdrawing is a bitch, but I guarantee you will lose less, or win more.  I can't guarantee that for any other piece of advice

  • Lloyd I know I miss value many times. But i never had success. So I made it a rule to just pass. Like Marco says "a no bet is better than a loss". But I get your point.

  • Shack...I really believe that to have success in this market or any investment, you need to set certain parameters and rules. The reason I think it's so important is because this becomes such an emotional racket at times and I've worked with so many SHARP guys through the years who are extremely successful making money at sports betting...and I've seen EVERY single  one let their emotions get the best of them on occassion.

I've been in this game my entire life and can promise you that anyone who says that they wager or even book for a living has allowed their emotions cost them. I believe that with experience it may happen less because you've encountered the "bad beat" and you've "chased" with bad results..but it still happens because we're human.

The quicker we set our ego's aside and realize we all have our weaknesses and faults..the sooner we can try to remedy them and be much more productive.

Personally, I got into this racket at such a young age that it seems like a lifetime ago since I've done the really foolish and self-destrustive things..but there are still times that I need to take a moment to put things in perspective and get a grip.

Finally, when you are totally honest with yourself and determine the things that have truly cost you in the past, you can finally set up some rules and parameters to stop them from happening. With that said, there are times where even with those things in place, I have certainly been tested...but as the years past, more times than not logic kicks in because my list is a perfect reminder of what happens when I go astray. But it's always good to be reminded.

The bottom line is that each of us are different people...we all have different goals and different financial situations and responsibilities, which means our rules will differ. BUT, we should all set them.

What I did was create 2 lists..

The first is strictly based on money-management rules and parameters.

The second is some handicapping factors like you touched on...but they are constantly changng because the data/results are. Meaning, we know that 20 yrs ago Home Dogs on MNF or Zig-Zag in NBA Playoffs were profitable...but today the market has caught up and adjusted.

The definition of an efficient market is one that corrects itself in time...and ours is no different.

You gave me a great idea for a couple of Morning Moves Newsletter and I'll make sure to post them here in the forum when I publish them..

Best of Luck and thanks for all your suppprt...VR

  • WOW! I gave you an idea. Thanks.I look forward to reading the newletter.

I really appreciate all the things I am learning from guys like you. Keep cashing tickets and passing knowledge. BOL all year.

PS get the fist pump back at the end of each video, it seems you have stopped it. Thats your signature move, you know like when Aaron Rodgers runs one in he gives the belt move.

  • So how did Vegas runner do in 2011?  By sticking to the rules, what profit did he show?  Vr's post references being totally honest with yourself, so will vr be totally honest and post his record?

If you preach principles, own up to the results.  Just my opinion.  Why not post the +\- units for the year?

Other cappers on this site post year to date records with proper money management, so why not vr?
  • I think you got one missin man.......TAKE THA RIGHT TEAM!......never take lsu over bama in a national title game.     Follow this one rule and you might make some money....gl
