By my count, the NIT opening games were 7-6 to the average closing over.  So, it's inconclusive whether the fouling rules have contributed to higher or lower scoring games.  Worth watching tomorrow to see if we can use anything for the 2nd round.

I did not find anything all that conclusive on the first pass through the charting, but as Bakersfield advances there is a prime note for folks that did not stay up late - that was one hell of a scramble cycle, the game going from 122 with 1:00 remaining to the final of 139. If it was to be Cuonzo Martin's last game at Cal, at least he stretched it out.

Am I to read anything into the very poor showing by the PAC 12 at home last night.  Wow. I might be overestimating UCLA and ARIZONA for the tourney. I have never liked Bill Walton's Conference of Champions, and now question them even more.

I am not sure I would read anything into the Cal loss - the Golden Bears were playing without Jabari Bird, and also with the distraction of the rumors of Cuonzo Martin leaving, while there was also the fluky elements of one of the worst shooting teams to make any tournament knocking down 8 triples in the first half. But I don't have an answer for the Utah second half yet. Unlike Cal the Utes came out and played with good early energy, leading by 11 early in the second half, and they were still up 5 with 6:30 left, before getting taken apart down the stretch (I am still in the early stages of grading that one).

David:

I am very interested in playing Akron +8 tonight in Houston.  Akron has two players 6-10 that can score and the middle is  Houston's huge Achilles heel as we have spoken about before. Am I overzealous and believing this Akron Zips team will easily cover the eight points?  You will remember Houston is not even playing at home as their stadium is under construction and as you noted earlier there students are on spring break. They're doing everything they can to get people at the game.  In the Conference tournament Connecticut's size was the determining Factor in their win over Houston.

It looks like a fit - the Cougars were struggling to draw crowds to Hofheinz anyway this season, so it could be particularly docile this evening (the game is on the home court of Texas Southern). Akron's roster is familiar enough with post-season experience to handle this well, so no shock if the Zips are in the hunt, perhaps even to win the game outright.

Hi David and Pappahoops

I thought I would add to this:

"It's good for us....Thank God it's Houston because we have a lot of Houston kids on our team (Antino Jackson, Daniel Utomi, Emmanuel Olojakpoke).  This will help us get motivated to play. They're all disappointed (from the MAC Tournament loss) but we're getting over it.....And Houston, I don't think they're out of our league by any means." Akron coach Keith Dambrot said.

One of the things that led to some fun discussion with an oddsmaker yesterday was that Akron roster. If they get just enough friends and family to show up, this may end up being close to a neutral crowd; though not that it will be loud enough for either side to influence the game flow.

My PR has Houston only 1 better on neutral vs.akron

And ilinoise St.only 2 better than Irvine

Is home court in these games really worth 7 or 8 points or are my prs off ?

Or is there some other factor in play ?

In these 2 games ?  Akron appears to be a great play with what u guys already posted.

Dave any opinion or prs from other sources on the Illinois St. Irvine game ?

Irvine/Illinois State isn't too far from where some of the base math models put it: KenPom has it -11 and Sagarin -12 if we use a 4-point home court. I get the Redbirds -9, but I could see UCI hanging around for a while at what has a chance to be a methodical grinder of a game flow.
