Maybe it's just me - I try to read books in their entirety, often more than once, and understand the author, their intent, and message as best I can, treating them with a proper standard of human dignity and respect, whether I ultimately agreed with their particular message or not. I was taught that was how a person learned, matured and developed. And once I grew enough to have my own belief system, I have believed that it is morally wrong to misrepresent something that someone has written, especially if it is done with intent, and not as an honest mistake. If that shows something about my character, then I guess it is something that I will just have to live with, because I'm not going to change.
