This week we go to Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA for the 112th US Open. The course plays as a very challenging 7170 par 70. Interestingly the course has no water hazards, no out of bounds and only one fairway bunker. However many including myself believe that even par on Sunday could be good enough to win the event. The last time The Olympic Club hosted the US Open was in 1998 when Lee Janzen came back from a seven shot deficit in the final round to edge the late Payne Stewart by one stroke and finish at even par. The course has had some changes since then beginning with the first hole. It was a par 5 in '98 and in previous Opens, now a 520 yd par 4 with a fairway just 29 yards wide. Also the 17th hole is has been changed from a par 4 to a par 5. The 505 yard dogleg left has been set up as a tricky hole that may see more pars then birdies. The par 3 8th is also new with 60 yards being added to it. Rory McIlroy won the Open last year posting a record -16 at Congressional. This year will be much different as the players will need to be stronger mentally to handle the difficultly of Olympic Club.
Of Course all of the Worlds top players will be on hand this week to contend for the second major of the year. One player the pro's may not recognize will be 14 year old Andy Zhang. The youngest player to ever play the US Open, made it through sectional qualifying and got in as an alternate after Paul Casey was forced to withdraw. What a great story for the Florida kid who hails from China. Phil Mickelson will be trying to capture his first US Open title in 20 years of playing "lefty" has not been able to capture a victory at the elusive Open. He has been runner up a number of times('99,'02,'04,'06,'09) he will need to keep his emotions in check if wants to win this week. Three time US Open winner Tiger Woods is a big favorite this week, coming of his 73rd career win 2 weeks ago at Memorial. Tiger will look to win his first major since 2008 when he won the US Open at Torrey Pines in a playoff against Rocco Mediate.
I will have my picks to win and other plays posted later today and tomorrow. We look to bounce back after getting a little unlucky last week. I believe we will get back to our winning ways this week as the US Open offers a lot of action. I will have as usual at least 10 picks to win outright as well tourney match ups and H2H plays for each round. Also some top ten plays and a few other winning picks. This will be a great event to watch as the players will need to play very well to have any chance on Sunday. Best of luck to all the golf fans and bettors this week.
