GROUP A
ZVVZ USK Prague vs. UMMC Ekaterinburg Nov. 5, 18:00 CET
|
Candace Parker is likely to have a big impact on UMMC Ekaterinburg's performance |
Key Match-Up: Jana Vesela vs. Candace Parker
Having missed last season with the ACL injury she sustained playing with the Czech Republic at EuroBasket Women 2013, veteran Jana Vesela is back from her unwanted sabbatical. And her first assignment could be trying to nullify Candace Parker who is back from her own surgery, having missed the FIBA World Championship for Women.
Key Stat: History is against the hosts as it is more than a decade since Prague picked up their only previous win against UMMC and they have lost their last ten meetings against the Russian powerhouse.
Game Notes: Laia Palau will play against her Spain national team colleagues Alba Torrens and Silvia Dominguez. Prague coach Natalia Hejkovawon the EuroLeague Women title with UMMC star Diana Taurasi at Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje.
Good Angels Kosice vs. Wisla Can-Pack Nov. 5, 18:00 CET
Key Match-Up: Erin Phillips vs. Allie Quigley
The two guards will go up against their former clubs where they are held in high esteem and both have had productive calendar years so far. Australian ace Phillips recently won a bronze medal with the Opals at the FIBA World Championship and was a big favourite in Krakow. Meanwhile shooting star Quigley was arguably the key component of Good Angels making a historic run to the Final Eight in 2013 and was recently handed the 2014 WNBA Sixth Player of the Year award.
Key Stat: Confidence is high for both teams and the key number right now is zero - since that is how many times they have both lost domestically this season. One of them is about to get a first taste of defeat as they both face their toughest challenge of their respective campaigns.
Game Notes: There is also a return to Kosice for Sweden national team and WNBA forward, Farhiya Abdiwho spent last season with Good Angels and of course Wisla coach Stefan Svitek was at the helm of Kosice for several seasons in the competition. Both teams missed out on the Final Eight last year after being dumped out in the play-offs.
Galatasaray odeabank vs. Basket Lattes Montpellier Agglomeration Nov. 5, 19:00 CET
Key Match-Up: Kelsey Bone vs. Elodie Godin
The reigning champions have lost some vital players during the off-season, but have a rock in Kelsey Bone who will be working hard under the hoop. BLMA have lost their post players and plugging the gap is former Les Bleues star and Olympian Elodie Godin, who has a fresh challenge after spending the last few years outside of her homeland in Schio.
Key Stat: BLMA must improve their performance on the road as they are staring into the face of a potential sixth straight away loss. Although ironically, their last success was their first trip of last season when they stunned Nadezhda.
Game Notes: New Galatasaray arrival Jelena Dubljevic and BLMA guard Anael Lardy know each other well, having played at ZVVZ USK Prague together. Chemistry will need to be found quickly by the champs, who have only four players from last year's glorious title winning journey.
GROUP B
|
Quanitra Hollingsworth's rebounding and inside play is vital for Fenerbahce |
Agü Spor Kulübü vs. Fenerbahce Nov. 5, 18:00 CET
Key Match-Up: Lara Sanders vs. Tina Charles
Both players enjoyed excellent contributions in the paint at the FIBA World Championship for Women, but didn't get to meet each other. They will now though, and that battle could be decisive. Especially since the hosts will need to do their utmost to control the boards - something which proved to be gold dust for them in their pursuit of success last year.
Key Stat: While Fenerbahce may be slight favourites in this one, it is almost a year to the day since Agü Spor lost on their home court in the tournament. They are gunning for a seventh straight home victory, having shot down the likes of UMMC Ekaterinburg last season.
Game Notes: There might be an intriguing match-up between Sanders and Quanitra Hollingsworth too, with the former replacing the latter as the naturalised option for the Turkey national team. Fenerbahce have also now won 18 of 19 games in the competition - their only loss being the painful final defeat last season.
Nadezhda vs. Energa Torun Nov. 5, 15:00 CET
Key Match-Up: Natalia Vieru vs. Tijana Ajdukovic
The pair competed for court time with each other as team-mates last season at Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje, but now they will go directly up against each other after their respective summer switches. Vieru is long established in the competition and has an excellent track record, while Ajdukovic debuted last year and has since established herself in the Serbia national team.
Key Stat: This will be the first EuroLeague Women game ever for Energa Torun, while Orenburg has been hosting games in the competition for six seasons.
Game Notes: If Energa Torun are going to stand a better chance of a surprise victory, they will need to slow down Dewanna Bonner who led Nadezhda in points and rebounds last season.
Tango Bourges vs. BK Imos Brno Nov. 5, 20:30 CET
Key Match-Up: Celine Dumerc vs. Frida Aili
Last time the clubs met, Dumerc had seven assists and displayed her qualities. She is the true architect of success for Bourges and will go up against a EuroLeague Women debutante in Sweden national team playmaker Frida Aili, who will be a leading player on a thin Brno roster.
Key Stat: It's 12 months since Bourges last fell at home in EuroLeague Women and that highlights the scale of the task for Brno.
Game Notes: Brno play-caller Jan Bobrovsky is the true veteran of EuroLeague Women and is in his 18th season, but his club have lost their last five games in the competition. He also has just three players who competed for him last year in the tournament.
Beretta Famila Schio vs. CB Avenida Nov. 6, 20:30 CET
Key Match-Up: Chiney Ogwumike vs. Angelica Robinson
Both players have had the hot hand domestically for their respective teams, with Ogwumike about to make her highly-anticipated debut in the competition for the Italian champions. Both are powerful players and it should be a great match-up inside and especially on the boards.
Key Stat: Continuity is the biggest friend of Avenida with just three new players and that could help them hit the ground running this season.
Game Notes: Newly recruited Schio forward Iva Sliskovic will play against her former team and also against Croatia national team-mate, Marija Rezan.
