California Chrome, lost due to human error, which error made, falls on the shoulders of Trainer Art Sherman. Ask him!
NO NEED TO WORK A FIT HORSE WHO JUST WON TWO ROUTE RACES. To maintain fitness and stay at that perfect level, all he needed was to be jogged or easily galloped into the race. But no, they "squeezed the lemon dry."
Great trainers (not all) make great errors of judgement in training. Mr. Sherman made one, and he will admit it, ask him. He will regret it until he dies! If the horse could talk, he would have asked, WHY ARE YOU WORKING ME? I'M ALREADY FIT!
California Chrome did not get beat. His trainer made sure he got beat, as he had too much time (3 weeks) to think of something irrational to do. You do not need to be a rocket scientist or to be a good trainer but you MUST have common sense and you must use it. Mr. Sherman you are never too old to learn are you?
I feel sorry for you, but you are human and you made a mistake. A very costly one. 10 years from now, NOBODY will remember who won The Belmont yesterday.
