The crowd will be singing, "Where the turf meets the surf at Ole Del Mar", and once again Del Mar will  put on a show of Thoroughbred Racing in California second to none. I can remember my first trip to Del Mar, in the San Diego area, and watching "Kissin George" go nose to nose with "Pretense", two of the best sprinters in the country. Jockeys Don McBeth and Donald Pierce, dueled to the wire in the feature race that day, and after watching that race, and a full card of racing at Del Mar, I realized where the class of thoroughbred racing was in the western section of our country. I had visited Saratoga, and Keeneland (when Keeneland never had a track announcer), and after getting back to The Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Wilshire Blvd,, after my first day at Del Mar, I knew Del Mar was the classiest venue in the country for horse racing, and the jockeys and trainers simply were in a league of their own, which included Bill Shoemaker, Bill Hartack, Lafitte Pincay, (turf expert rider) Fernando Toro, Don Pierce and Don McBeth to name a few, in the late 60's and early 70's. It was nothing to be seated in the Del Mar Turf Club, near Charger QB Dan Fouts, actors Bob Hope and Elizabeth Taylor. But it was the horses and Jockey Colony that was so impressive. So while I certainly won't be at Del Mar on Wednesday for opening day, I can bet on The Best Bet of The Day! That will be, "HOLY CANDY", a 3 year old colt, bred in Kentucky and trained by John Sadler, who expects HOLY CANDY to dominate going a mile on the turf. "HOLY CANDY" who will run in the 9th Race, will be ridden by Jockey Garrett Gomez. There was no trainer any more successful, the last four weeks of the recent Hollywood meet, than John Sadler. Again, Sadler is "loaded for bear" and the mild mannered Sadler, not one to say much, was praised by his capable Assistant Larry Benvenuti. I look forward to wagering on HOLY CANDY, (to win big) and to a very prosperous meet at "Ole Del Mar." Good luck to all!

Harry I like your write up and know for a fact that I love Candy,my wife loves Candy and my grand kids really LOVE CANDY. I'm going to bet some of their Lemonade money on Holy Candy. When I told me wife what I was going to do she told me to remember that "Candy is Dandy but Sex will rot your teeth". G/L with Holy Candy at Del Mar.

johnnymo - I will be schocked if HOLY CANDY goes of at 1/2. There are two divisions to this race, and the Division Holy Candy is in, it might be the harder of the two, as there are a couple of horses in this Division that will take money. Plus many bettors won't like the outside post, going a mile at Del Mar.
