Guys...Lets remember the biggest key to making money on a horse race beside picking the winner. Please wait til the last few minutes to make a bet. When the betting opens and there is already a ton of money on one horse that draws everybodys attention to it, and we dont want that...so lets be smart and patient this month with these horses! Thanks in advance ruckus!!
Very good point ! I have had a ton of winners by watching the early money and betting a horse I didn't think would win. When " funny money " , as I call it, is bet on a horse that doesn't figure - it is usually worth considering. I am not saying to go all out on this horse - but at least have a few tickets as kind of an insurance bet. This is so true of horses that look terrible on the form - but " somebody " is betting a lot of money on the horse. Many times, a horse with a ML of 10-1 will open at 2-1 and then drift up to 5-1 at post. These have to be considered also.
If you are at the track, always note the opening odds of horses on your form. Compare that to the morning line and look for large discepancies. Then follow the betting pattern up to post time to monitor the money bet. Also pay attention to the place and show money. See if these pools are getting similar money bet. If they are, that is a good sign.
The flip side of this is to watch for late money bet. A horse that is 4-1 with a minute to post drops to 2-1 at post time - these win a lot. The betters " in the know " are waiting to not tip off the public - just what Dogg is alluding to. I can't even descibe the number of times I bet a horse at 3-1 - they start the race and then show him at 2-1. At the half, he drops to 8-5.
So when you bet right at post time, you have the best chance of not tipping off the public.
I have to tell you a funny story that happened several years ago at a harness track. An owner of a horse (on my bowling league ) had his horse going the next day. He told my teammate his horse would win - or at least they thought he would. He was listed as 12-1 ML. He also said PLEASE don't tell anyone about this - OK? The next night a the track - half of the bowling league showed up ( most with their bowling jackets on ) to bet on the horse. The horse opened at 4-5 odds !
