2012 CFB Futures Play of the Year

Large Risk = Large Opportunity

2012 COLLEGE FOOTBALL FUTURES PLAY
PACIFIC-12 “CONFERENCE of CHAMPIONS”

Seldom does Media Day provide any NEW revelations, as
PAC-12 Coaches & Players proved once again yesterday with:
“M.O.T.S.” (More Of The Same)

The general conclusion from the overall narrative yesterday?

Despite collective efforts of PAC-12 Writers to facilitate equivalent coverage, &
Try as they might to remain somewhat impartial &
Including all PAC-12 Teams in overall reporting

Most discussions & focus inevitably dovetailed into
Everything associated with
The 2 undisputed, unilaterally favored Divisional PAC-12 Teams:
  • Southern California Trojans -175 Odds to Win PAC-12 Title
  • Oregon Ducks +160 Odds to Win PAC-12 Title
Obviously, opens door to payout possibility...
IF a LEGIT Darkhorse team exists among PAC-12’s ten “small-chips”

Does it? For my money, it does…in Salt Lake City

2012 UTAH UTES

Simply put, Utah has a helluvalot going for them in 2012
  • UU experience on all 3 sides of ball
  • UU talent on all 3 sides of ball
  • UU depth on all 3 sides of ball
  • Few (if any) significant UU team weaknesses
  • UU superb, established coaching
  • UU better than good...GREAT Schedule
EXPERIENCE?

UU tied for 5TH Most (FBS) SR’s in 2-Deep (15)

OFFENSE?

Biggest Question about Utes in 2011:
How much can Utah improve Offensively?

Hard to imagine a Team such as the 8-5 Utes of 2011
Putting up the worst Offensive Yardage output in the PAC-12
Yet, UU was #12 of 12 (#104 FBS | 298 Avg Conf)
Though, Utah Offense was LAST in the PAC-12 in Total Offense
UU was hampered w/o QB Jordan Winn for much of 2011
UTAH Jr Winn Returns in 2012 for Year-4 in SLC

UU also returns remarkable 96% of 2011 O-Ydg Output (#2 FBS)

ACE IN THE HOLE?

UU brings back PAC-12’s TOP Returning Yardage Runner
UTAH Sr RB 5-8 | 186 John White (1520 Yds last year)

O-LINE?

ALL UU’s OL’s are Upperclassmen
3 SENIOR VETS & 2 Serviceable Jr Tackles

With Utah’s offense almost certain to succeed,
How will Utah’s Defense perform?

DEFENSE?

Utah Defense returns 7 of 11 Starters
FROM the PAC-12 TOP Scoring Defense

Phil Steele lists Utah’s DL #1 in the PAC-12
If 2012 is anything like 2011,
Utah’s D will be exceedingly difficult for PAC-12 Offenses to navigate thru

SPECIAL TEAMS?

UU Returns SR Kicker (Peterson)
UU Returns SR Punter (Sellwood)

TRUMP CARD?

GEM of the 2012 Utah Season?
GREAT SCHEDULE
  • UTAH SKIPS Oregon
  • UTAH PLAYS Southern California in Salt Lake City
  • UTAH PLAYS RIVAL BYU in Salt Lake City
UPSETS?

Another contributing factor:
PAC-12 South Rival So Cal Trojans’
SC’s inevitable propensity to lose at least 1 game/year to a heavy underdog
(& SC still has a few questions at RB)

COACHING?

Pure Game Management Skills,
SC Kiffin is playing checkers to UU Whittingham’s Chess
(Humble Opinion)

Again, this is just a calculated play, based on so many UU positives here
Weighed vs. Utah’s overwhelming underdog odds

2 UNIT | 2012 CFB Futures Play of the Year
PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE WINNER
UTAH UTES +2500 (sportsbook.ag)

All the best, guys.

Great writeup man!  Only thing that worries me was their pac 12 record last year. Wins vs. Oregon St, Arizona, UCLA, Wazzu and Colorado. Losses to USC, Wash, ASU and Cal. Basically, they beat up on the weak and couldn't beat anyone with a pulse. 5-0 vs the bottom feeders and 0-4 vs bowl teams from within the PAC.

I too would expect a better year with Wynn back. Awfully one dimensional last year and had to rely on the run. 2nd year in the PAC, 15 seniors in 2 deep with a total of 17 starters back. I think they are improved, but your probably getting the right odds at 25-1 in order to take them to win the league. Good luck this year and thanks for the Utah info!

Thanks Sparty & Boise.  Greatly appreciated.  I realize wholeheartedly this is a huge longshot... Just a matter of the (few hundy) Risks lower than a huge 25-1 odds/Reward, & really see a scenario where SC beats Oregon in LA. yet loses to UU in SLC. & (as said) SC somehow slipping to a lg dawg for 2 L's w/ Utah outlasting all in South - now the challenge is if UU COULD run a 1-loss table & gain homefield over an Ore team w/5 of first 6 at AUTZEN, ect, much more likely to win North even w/1 loss....great topic either way.  Thanks again, guys.

Steve,

What do you think about the Utes laying 10 to Utah St? I just don't see Utah St. being physically able to matchup with Utah. They lost their top 2 rushers from last year including Turbin who was the centerpiece. I like their little QB Keaton, but he's turnover prone. Laying 10 points on the road in a friday night game seems like a square play, but I just see Utah steam rolling the Aggs. What's your take on that game?

Forgot to mention Utah has BYU on deck....... Possible look ahead spot. Wow, now that I think of it, I'm not so sure about laying DD points on a friday night game, on the road, with a rival on deck. Still think they win, but I'm not real sure anymore about laying 10.

Steve couldn't agree more. I rated Utah as the 3rd best team in the Pac-12 with UW and Stan right behind. I love their coach and I love how they always play hard.

Steve what are you hearing with UW on the defensive side of the ball? Im just wandering cuz I seem to like the team alot more than vegas does in there goy games.
