If the line really doesn't make a difference as it relates to the outcome/final score (and in a very large percentage it doesn't) why is this important? Wouldn't it be much more important to be able to effectively estimate the stronger team that is likely to win the game and cover whatever number than to waste effort chasing numbers? What am I missing?

The line really does matter. I do agree that Chasing Numbers is not good. A lot of people do though..

Of course the line matters. I should have been more clear about "estimating team the stronger team." What I meant to convey was the likelyhood of the stronger team having an abilty to cover the number placed against them.

Either you feel they have that capabilty (and you've estimated well) or they don't. In the case you don't feel they can- you might bet the other side or lay of out of a sense of uncertainty or discomfort with the game number.

As you can probably tell- I feel you should develope a skill at determing how strong and consistent  teams truly are. You might also work on situational approaches as to how the game is likely to play out.

Hopefully there is more than one thing to be learned from this thread. One of those and perhaps the most important goes along with another Thread Called "Trust Your Numbers." Too many people in your example Oldhead have a Clear understanding of WHO will win a game. But these same people are then swayed by the SHARPS, who don't exist , because the number moved against their team they liked.

Bottom Line: One should get the best line they can get for obvious reasons. One should not waiver simply because others don't agree with their findings. I treat line moves the same way. A Line Move is not a reason to doubt one's self. It is a Reason to perhaps bet a game if that line move moved into Betting Territory..

Or as some would put it. F**K THE SHARPS!! THEY DON'T KNOW SH**T!!

I very couldn't agree more with that advice Greg. Bettors should most definitely pay attention to that suggestion. If you can't trust your own judgment at some point (after putting in the work) why bother?

This is a simple concept that people on this message board have showed time and time again that they have no interest in listening to

You want a handicapping tip?  Spend as much time getting a good number as you do researching games. Depositing/withdrawing/depositing/withdrawing is a pain, but I guarantee you will lose less, or win more.  I can't guarantee that for any other piece of advice
