And that was a great spectacle. Ohio State is the winner of the first true college football national championship, the playoff format is here to stay and it’s only going to keep getting better.
My old radio partner, Steve Cofield, (@stevecofield) managed to locate some quotes from some of the major movers in the world of college football that were recorded for posterity prior to the advent of the playoff. The tone was basically the same. No one liked it. Bad for the regular season (wrong), bad for the other bowls (wrong) and so on. I’d be willing to bet those naysayers are singing a different tune this morning.
As for the game, Ohio State left no doubt whatsoever. They destroyed Oregon all night at the point of attack, and I’m really happy to see power football winning out over finesse. That’s just my preference as far as how the game should be played goes.
Clearly, the next step is to expand the playoffs to eight teams. The big five conference winners get the automatics, there’s one bid for the non-AQ’s, and two at large selections. That’s my choice, but I’m certainly open to other ideas on how to arrive at the Elite Eight for college football.
One last note. Had there been no playoff this season, Florida State and Alabama would have been the two teams playing for what would have been what college football has always previously had, which is a mythical title game.
This is much better.
