Gamecocks QB missed practice with back spasms

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw missed most of practice Thursday because of back spasms, a week before the ninth-ranked Gamecocks open the season at Vanderbilt.

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said on his radio call-in show that Shaw was struggling to move at practice, so the coaches sent him to the training room for treatment. South Carolina returns to the practice field Saturday. Spurrier said he hoped the day off would help Shaw's condition.

Shaw is a junior beginning his first full season as starting quarterback. He took over the job last fall for Stephen Garcia, who was dismissed from the program. Shaw went 7-1 after taking over as South Carolina won a program-record 11 games. Shaw threw for 1,218 yards and 12 touchdowns. He rushed for 483 yards and seven TDs.

Shaq Roland. Remember that name. Shaw will be fine. Now, I am not saying they cover this game. I'm still undecided. I do think it stays under. Even with the loss(es) of Ingram and Gilmore to the NFL, this defense may be better than last year. I DNC that Ellis is gone. Lorenzo Ward has been around the team long enough to make a seamless transition. I like what Vanderbilt is doing and yes, they return a ton and it will be their GOY, but without some gimmicks on offense, they'll struggle to move the ball.

Good stuff Griff, you are the cfb MAN! Keep up the good work!

I was leaning Vandy +7 anyway, looks like the line hasn't moved yet. Better get it now before it drops any.

IF this line moves under 7, I might go chickens.  Alot of what goes on here, is happening right in Dave's backyard; so he is in the know and much respect.  SS has a guilty past regarding shannigans, and he is prone to keep em guessing.

Was he "biting his lower lip" upon commercialized statement??  In any event, sounds like things are on even keel.  I expect for the spurs to be ready in this one.  & the ole ball coach may go rub-a-dub-dub.  Latte will be a huge asset here, and given dave's assessment on USC's defense; could be doomful for the dores'.

Spurrier is defintely the master of media manipulation....all the same, Shaw will start no matter what they got to pump him up with & he may very well be 100% on gameday.....BUT  anyone who's ever hurt their back whether it was just a strain, muscle spasms, or something more serious knows just how iffy back problems can be and how getting over them can vary from a couple days to months(BACK PROBLEMS ARE A BITCH)....i figured anyone interested in this game would defintely want to know about key player's status leading up to kick off

I dont think any line movement has resulted from this, but if one could buy a hook making Vandy+7.5  and then anticipate the line to drop and get S.C. less than a Touchdown, you could have a Lloyd Christmas angle(i dont know what yall call playing both sides, but if they dont have a name, i suggest we call it the "X-MAS Angle").....only problem is public perception of Vandy will probally hold the line steady at a touchdown, but the way James Franklin has energized this program, who knows?   what do yall think the line will do & better yet what does Lloyd Christmas have to say about playing both sides from a pure mathmatical perspective for College Football's season opener?

Great post, Griff.

RB, I just don't see all the Vandy love.  They lost to the worst UT team--ever LY.  SC has the better personel.  So someone is telling me The OBC is going to get outcoached?  Ain't buying. Steve has some talent.  If anything, tease SC and the total, which way you like. That's a winner.  Vandy ain't winning this game.   SC  wins by 10 imo.

here is how i look at this game..........

First off, i do not trust shaw for caroline and don't know if SS does either.

2nd:  This game is on the road, thus 4 pt. HF adv.  USC - 7, on neutral wood be usc -11, usc at home -15.  Don't know if gamecrooks are over two td's better at home.  I always do a backflip on these.

3rd:  if you look in Big I's thread where the O-line return starters sits, Vandy (& UT I might add) is on the top of the list.  my bad they both are even in that category.... but Vandy does return quite a few starters again and should be the strongest I've seen them in a decade.

4th:  I saw alot of improvement w/ J Rodg for Vandy LY.  I think he is the better QB in this matchup.  Vandy coach will be hungry, team will be healthy, and they host.

5th:  Seven is such a solid #, esp. out of the gate.  If I could get the 6.5 would not hesitate.

Vandy has notoriously been the.... uh........ dore' mat for the SEC East.  Brains first, brawn second.  Elite school in the East imo.  But oddsmakers know that Vandy gets no love, and even LY and esp. YB, they were horrific ATS.

Something tells me SS plays it safe and will run Latte' ragged to get the win here.  If he does not trust Shaw (I don't), he will hold short passes, and primarily run orient.  USC has good/great?? defense per Dave, put Vandy does have good cast of WR talent.  I do not think they can run on the cocks, which will be time ticking bomb for their demise SU.

One thing for sure, I will not pull the trigger on Vandy.  & may hold off on USC till I see more.  Lot of "cocky" talk by caroline groupies, but I've heard it all before.  SS has a pension, healthcare, medicare and set for life - but even still, I can see a thrown visor in this one.
