We all know the result of the game, Colorado State wins but doesn't cover. Nor did they deserve to, as they were clearly the worst team on the field for the majority of the game.
I would make this play again tomorrow if given the opportunity. I liked the way the Rams had been playing down the stretch and while they had become bowl eligible last week, they had loads of positive momentum going and I fully expected a good performance here.
I also thought the situation at Fresno State screamed fade. The Bulldogs have had more than a few games where I think it's fair to say their effort was in question. This was also a really chaotic week for the program. The offensive coordinator became a lame duck as he was fired. The defensive coordinator is apparently sticking around, but not as the defensive coordinator, as he's been demoted.
What happened? Colorado State got a fast 7-0 lead on a punt return after a defensive stop and actually looked sharp at the outset. They held Fresno to a field goal following a long kickoff return. First actual CSU offensive possession, they had a nice drive going that stalled, but the defense then stuffed Fresno on a fourth down. At that point, I felt very confident this game would actually win easily. I can't explain what took place after that. Fresno completely took over the game and it wasn't fluky. They dominated both lines of scrimmage and if not for the special teams heroics by CSU, the game is a romp.
Bottom line is that if one is laying a good sized number and the team is behind by a big margin at any point, it's not a good play. That's the case here and there aren't any excuses coming from me. Not a bad beat, just a bad call.
