Coach Fletcher’s College Football Plan to Win
The Marshall Thundering Herd
Marshall served notice last season that Conference USA or not, they are a force to be reckoned with in college football. The school from Huntington, West Virginia might have been better known for a tragedy than for their football team. The November 14, 1970, plane crash that killed all 75 passengers on board, including 37 members of the Thundering Herd football team, is well documented. The event and its aftermath were depicted in the 2006 Warner Brothers motion picture, We Are Marshall, starring Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox. But last year’s football team changed all that.
In 2014, Coach Doc Holliday led the Herd to its finest season. They finished the season at 13-1 and 7-1 in Conference USA games. After winning the Eastern Division title, they squared off against the West champion Louisiana Tech. Marshall bet the Bulldogs 26-23 to win the conference championship. Subsequently they were invited to the inaugural Boca Raton Bowl where they easily handled Mac champion Northern Illinois 52-23.
This year’s squad might actually be better. In fact, you can say that Marshall Football will be more like Marshall Track this season with tremendous speed on both offense and defense. The defense is expected to have an attacking style prone to forcing turnovers. And with the points that Marshall is expected to score, the opposition will be scrambling to catch up most of the time.
Michael Birdsong is a transfer from James Madison and is a stud with a cannon for an arm. You won’t find many running backs better than Devon Johnson. Johnson is a 246 lb senior that rushed for nearly 1800 yards last season on just 206 carries. The former tight end ran for 272 against Florida Atlantic last year. He ranked 5th in the nation in yards per game (135.9) and yards per rush (8.58). He has 25 td’s and an 8.00 per carry average for his career. Johnson, nicknamed “Rockhead”, is an ideal balance of power and break away speed.
I am lucky enough to know Doc Holliday personally and I can tell you he is a fine coach who always gets the most out of his players. Purdue and Western Kentucky might be all that stands between the Thundering Herd and a perfect season going into a bowl game. The offense can be very balanced if needed and the defense will be quick and a hard hitting pressure defense.
