  • TEXAS RANGERS V. ST. LOUIS CARDINALS OVER 7.5 -120

What a game last night.  Unreal.  Now it all comes down to the winner of Game 7.
St. Louis will send out Chris Carpenter, the only true ace of both teams to face the Rangers.  Unfortunately, he will be pitching on 3 days rest.  The only other time he pitched on short rest was in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Phillies.  He lasted just 3 innings, throwing 65 pitches while giving up 5 hits.  He gave up 3 runs in the 1st inning and 1 in the 2nd until finally being pulled for a pinch hitter in the 4th.  It was Carpenters shortest outing of the year.  The Phillies were the 13th ranked offense this season in terms of runs scored and 16th in terms of BA (.253).  The Rangers were the 3rd ranked offense this season in terms of runs scored and 1st in terms of BA (.283) in the regular season.
St. Louis is relying on a 36-year-old pitcher who has struggled with arm injuries of late, has thrown over 267 innings this season including the playoffs (most in MLB), and against a lineup that will be seeing him for the third time in less than 10 days with revenge on their mind.  Oh and Texas has yet to lose consecutive games in over 2 months, leading me to believe they will be resilient tonight and put last nights collapse behind them.
I know some will argue the one outing on 3 days rest is too small a sample size, but anyone who watched that game knows he looked downright awful.  Add in the fact that he doesn’t have any particularly overpowering pitch, it will be in 40-degree weather, and everything else I mentioned, we might be getting to the STL bullpen very early.
Meanwhile, Texas will send out Matt Harrison, a lefty, to face off against the St. Louis Cardinals, who ranked as the 5th best offense this season in terms of runs scored and BA.  They were also 8th against LHP.  Like most starting pitchers in this series, Harrison does not have overpowering stuff.  He also has control issues at times and a very pedestrian K/BB ratio of 2.21.  He is 2-1 in the playoffs, with the one loss coming against whom else, St. Louis.  This is also a situation where a 26-year old kid with just 3 years experience will have the spotlight on him, pitching on the road, in a decisive Game 7.  I question whether he is ready for it.  As is the case with STL, I expect to see the Texas bullpen very early.
We all know that some guys will be unavailable and many guys that will be available will either be extremely worn out or unfamiliar with pitching out of the bullpen.  While some guys offensively are banged up, it looks like everyone is a go except Matt Holliday.  He will be replaced by Allen Craig, which may actually work in their favor considering Holliday was batting just .158 in the series compared to Craig hitting .265.
I’m excited for what should be a great game.

    Good luck everyone!
