Today's SDQL Video Query of the Day demonstrates how to query the situation when a team is seeking same-season revenge vs their opponent's starting pitcher.

Here is a link to view :

While you're there, feel free to check out the NFL videos as well.  There are two sets -- one that demonstrates how to use the SDQL under the "How-To" menu and another that has a Video Query of the Day for the NFL under the NFL QOD menu.  During the season, the NFL Video Query of the Day will be ACTIVE for the upcoming week of actions.

Without the SDQL, you're just guessing.

Thanks Dr. M!  How would I do a SDQL on Chris Sale coming off a loss of 2+ runs and how the white sox do in there following game where Sale starts?

Is it this...

starter=Chris Sale and team=White Sox and p:margin<=-2

Is it this...

starter=Chris Sale and team=White Sox and p:margin<=-2

The power and efficiency of the SDQL comes from the prefixes.  There are three main prefixes in MLB.

p: points the parameter to the team's previous game.

s: points the parameter to the starter's previous start.

S: points the parameter to the starter's previous start vs this opponent.

So...

starter=Chris Sale and team=White Sox and p:margin<=-2

provides the results when Sale is starting and the Sox are off a two-plus run defeat in their last game.

starter=Chris Sale and team=White Sox and s:margin<=-2

provides the results when Sale is starting and the Sox lost by 2-plus runs in his last start.

starter=Chris Sale and team=White Sox and S:margin<=-2

provides the results when Sale is starting and the Sox lost by 2-plus runs in his last start vs this opponent (Sale has personal revenge).

In this case, you want:

starter=Chris Sale and s:margin<=-2

(you don't need to specify team=White Sox, but it doesn't hurt)

That's some good use of the SDQL!

If I'm reading the page correctly Sale and the White Sox are 3-0 this year when this happens and 9-5 since April 18, 2013 in this spot, please confirm if you have time, thank you!  I used this query:

starter=Chris Sale and s:margin<=-2

Chris Sale has eleven straight quality starts in this spot.  In his last eleven starts under this condition, he went an average of 7.33 innings and allowed an average of 1.64 runs.  He is indeed 3-0 in this spot this season, but all three wins were by a lone run.

I don't think the question here is whether Sale is going to have a quality start.  The questions are, "Can the White Sox' bullpen not blow the game and can the White Sox' offense score?

Funny, that was my first query this morning to see how the Orioles have done in this situation. Not too shabby at 11-5 on the season including 8-2 L10 and a nice 7-1 at home. Thanks for sharing, Doc.
