It was on this date in 2003 that a guy named Todd McFarlane purchased the Barry Bonds 73rd home run ball for the tidy sum of $517,500. Personally I hope he is enjoying it. I wouldn't pay $10 for the damn thing, but that's just me. It was also on this date back in 1985 that ABC announced a new Monday night football crew consisting of Frank Gifford, Joe Namath and OJ Simpson. Personally, and I still cannot believe I'm saying this, I think the highlight of monday night football was when Howard Cosell and Don Meredith were paired with Gifford. Howard could make you want to throw things through the TV but he was entertaining as hell. Dandy Don knew precisely how to punch his buttons and get him going. And it was always a hoot to listen to Meredith start singing turn out the lights, the party's over when the game was well in hand. It was fun to listen to. I miss it. Back before the NFL sunday ticket and ESPN the halftime highlights on monday night football were must see tv. It was the only time you would see some highlights from the sunday games. Completely different era. True story, one time I was with a buddy driving to St Louis to watch a Cardinals and Packers game back in the 80's. We were talking about coverage and I suggested how cool it would be to have a 24 hour all sports station and likewise with radio and sports talk. He was skeptical there was enough audience to justify it. Oh brother, talk about not acting on a vision. I totally blew that one, lol.
Okay, a free selection. I am saying take the Dodgers tonight to take the series finale in Kansas City. I am not a big fan of Haren but Shields has not looked quite right of late and I think the Dodgers are a bargain at this price. The fact is Haren is a spotless 4-0 lifetime against the Royals with a 2.45 era. I watch this KC team pretty closely and to me Shields has had some command issues of late and unless he gets back in the zone today I think the wrong team is favored here. No, it's no triple but I do like the Dodgers. The Royals have a very fragile psyche and right now they are reeling some after the big winning streak. Decent team but nothing special.
On the business side we cashed last night with a baseball Triple star as I felt Kershaw would dominate the KC lineup and Clayton held up his end of the deal in fine fashion. Thank you to those who followed along. I have not had a lot of featured releases with baseball as I am trying hard to pick my spots. If I don't have a selection I feel has the legs to justify a featured release I will not market it as such. That is my policy and it's iron clad. As a matter of fact today I do not have a featured release, only subscriber action. I do VERY much want to thank those who continue to come on board early for the football package. Much appreciated and it will be here before we know it. That's it for today.
