I know that nobody wants to hear about this again, but I do want to stress its importance one final time. I highly recommend that everyone have a system in place for September. Good, bad or indifferent, I will continue to try to help folks here help themselves;
Know your limit and play within it! Always utilize proper Money Management Principles (MMP).
My belief is that you should ALWAYS "unitize" your bankroll and increase/decrease wager size according to account balances. That is to say that if you have a $1,000 balance, 1% is $10 and a unit should be no more than $20 (2%). Think of it in terms of poker "blinds" and how long you can sustain yourself.
Using a winning "one-unit" play as an example when wagering 2% @ -110 your 'roll would increase to $1020 and your following play would be at $20.40. By the same token, that same losing "one-unit" play would reduce your bankroll to $978 and in turn reduce your next wager to $19.56 (-110). By utilizing a sliding scale your bet (and unit) size fluctuates accordingly with wins and losses. Here's a humorous analogy to keep things simple; when you are happy....your unit grows. That, my friends, is how you build and maintain a bankroll. The better you treat it, the better it will treat you. All too many of us have had that little hot streak and increased our plays without having proper Money Management Principles in place. That (and chasing) is exactly how you go bust. We have all learned that the hard way at some point. How many times we need to put our hand on that hot stove is the question?
Practice Proper Bankroll Management and you will be amazed at just how quickly the fun WILL return to the game! With practice, this will become second nature and you will spare yourself the misery of flattening your bankroll over and over again. Unless you have unlimited resources to replenish, you MUST have some form of MMP in place in order to be a successful long-term bettor.
I don't put this time in for the good of my health, so please continue reading. I hope it's not as boring as school?
Professor Bruno's Daily Words of Wisdom;
What went wrong?
Personally speaking, I always look at the AM box-scores; if my starter(s) won I likely 'capped it right, if they lost.....probably not. Using yesterday as an example, I backed Wilson, Anderson, Hahn, Phelps, Quintana and Kazmir. These starting pitchers went 3-1 with 2 NDs which would generally (and should be) a winning night. Only Anderson lost (which tells me that it may have been a misstep), however the 'pens blew both Quintana's and Wilson's fine starts (14IP, 3R).....simply nothing we can do, but move onward. Do not get down on yourself on a night that didn't appear to go your way. Look at these numbers.......did you blow it or did the relievers? Too many folks have been scrambling to "tweak" their work this season before ensuring that it was "off" to begin with. I am still working on a method to rank the relief, but with it being so consistently inconsistent......it hasn't been easy. I will update......
Although it appears that Bryan beat me to the punch, I am going to back his play 110%. It is Friday, so it is appropriate that we look at The Freak. I thought I was snake-bitten losing with the DBacks yesterday, but I am diving headlong back into the snake-pit here. I will take it a step further and suggest that a "half-value" play on Arizona -1.5 (+160) will also reward us;
**Arizona Diamondbacks (-115) ~ The "key" indicators that jump out at me here are a) Lincecum's monstrous .408 OB% vs LHBs and b) the fact that the Giants have not hit well on the road this season and the pitchers carried them early. RHBs Goldy and Hill have also absolutely "OWNED" The Freak. I do believe we will begin to see a reversal of fortunes for them due to their .240 road average. I am going to add to these notes, but the line will likely continue to climb despite the public's affinity for Timmy. Grab it early. It looks a lot like the Padres' line from yesterday? Just sayin'......
I will take it a step further and suggest that a "half-value" play on Arizona -1.5 (+160) will also reward us well. This is so clear-cut to me that I am not going to bother adding to the summary. Grab that Cash!
