NBA Betting: The NBA on TNT Prime-Time Handicapping Factor

Last year I examined an unbelievable trend that developed involving underdogs in NBA on TNT Thursday night games after the first month of the season.  Underdogs went 17-3 ATS - including 11 straight-up winners - after favorites went 6-2 ATS during November of 2007.  Now the big question is, will we see a similar pattern again this year?

The first few weeks of the NBA season give bettors a great opportunity to beat the oddsmakers at their own game, as we can take advantage of somewhat soft lines before the first real adjustments are made.  This might explain why favorites fared well in these nationally televised games during the first month and then struggled for the next few months as the supposedly weaker teams proved to be extremely motivated to play on Thursday nights.

Underdogs ended up going 28-14 ATS in NBA on TNT games overall last season, and these prime-time matchups are very comparable to Monday Night Football games in the NFL due to the impact of public perception and the fact that there is such a limited slate of games to choose from on Thursdays.  I will track this during the season again this year, but here are some nuggets of info worth betting from the Pregame Cheat Sheet on tonight's TNT games...
  • Rockets are 1-6 ATS in the last 7 meetings with the Mavs.
  • The UNDER is 9-3 in Houston's last 12 games overall.
  • Hornets are 1-11 ATS in their last 12 Thursday games.
  • Suns are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 home games.

Keep in mind the Pregame Cheat Sheet Total Plays of the Day are riding an amazing 13-0 run, so don't miss out today!

Best of luck on your NBA picks today and throughout the season Beer

  • This is a 'pregame gold start,' ejej. Good info I will keep this trend this season.

  • I have went like 54-27 the last 2 years on TNT Thursdays.

    Matty quit telling my secrets!!

Underdogs are always a solid bet on TNT Thursday..I take them allot guys.  This blog is telling.  Everyyone knows they are on national TV and the underdogs always seem to have their A Game.  Did I mention I hammered ther Cavs on opening night on TNT for a winner?  Proof is in the pudding.

    Goos stuff Matty, as always..

  • Thanks guys - best of luck on tonight's TNT games.

  • Perfect night for underdogs on TNT last night with both winning straight-up by double digits :)

  • Too bad your blog suggested playing the favs last night...

  • Depends on how you read it - it also suggested playing the Cheat Sheet Total Play of the Day.  Now 14 straight winners :)

  • It would appear early that the trend you cited is live yet.My observations of Dallas last night are that they got old real quick  in west Div,the same would go for Phoenix .It appears they went the wrong way in recruiting ,talented role players they have may not be good enough on most nights to cover the line.on the other side the Rockets looked good with their additions  of young talented players who fit into system.

  • I would tend to agree buddy but I also thought the lines were shaded a bit toward the underdogs.  Last year, I think you would have seen the lines a point or two higher on the home favorites in their first home games.  But I also think the Rockets and Hornets are above-average road teams.

  • As I stated in the forum this past week, I rarely play ANY any NBA games or follow too many trends EARLY in the season, just not a good idea until the dust settles.

Mattys TNT angle is a good one and I have a very strong record the oast 2 years on TNT Thursdays to back it up in terms of W / L %.  I opened with a TNT dog to start the season on Cleveland as a dog!  Last nights TNT card was way out of whack and I felt the dogs were not getting near enough points......Cleveland looked very strong last night, and

Phoenix just did not look good in a half court game.  The missed shots and turnovers for them was appualing.

Phoenix is an old team and will be suspect this season against teams who slow it down, and remember they play a TON on TNT......food for thought.

  • Thanks Tony - my point here was not necessarily to play favorites the first month but more about showing the value on dogs in the TNT games throughout the season.  I'm glad some of you understood where I was going with this...

  • Bottomline here is this......this blog has USEFUL info in it and it was a USEFUL post. Thank you Matty for post. Is it really that hard to not be so negative all the time???..........................

    Food4Thought.........

  • It's ok GF, I'm simply looking to provide helpful info worth betting for those who need it.  Some people just know it all LOL

  • Phoenix is is an old team but they are the best of all times

  • Wow, Matty, thanks for that info. I'll have to keep this in mind Thursday night. Thanks for the info.
