Early Vegas Summer League Thoughts....is that Kevin LOVE?

Kevin Love appears to have REALLY really HIT THE WIEGHTS....Good GOD, he looks like a new man....he's truly gone from a Chunky Ball of pink cookie dough to a ripped up, polished Power Forward who is running the floor really well.

I know it's Summer League - but an 18 - 13 night is a pretty nice debut....I could be wrong on Love...just wasn't ready to call him a bonified Lottery Pick.

Blazers Bayless' TWENTY SIX Pts, and...

TWENTY THREE FT ATT in a 75-74 OT Loss was as good as we Blazer fans could possibly hope for!

Myself and two other die-hard Blazer Fan (+ old College Roommates) are Gonna be IN VEGAS Friday NIGHT THRU WED for several Games....I'll drop in a report or two - if there is any interest....

I've heard Baseball fans traveling to Spring Training called pathetic before....but we Blazer Geeks must be a little nuts to travel to Vegas for ROOKIE SUMMER LEAGUE games....but we HAD to go since they won't be broadcasting them all this Summer!

Remember....The Blazers are the only PRO GAME IN TOWN!  It's all we have - besides PAC-10 Football.

I've been following the summer league closely. Watched the Wolves and Mavs on Monday night. Yes Kevin Love has lost some weight, but he's still having quickness issues. He picked up 4 fouls in the first 5 minutes the other night!

Bayless looks outstanding attacking the basket. I'm more interested in the under-the-radar type players. Guys who went undrafted that are trying to prove something: JuJuan Smith for one.

Re: Early Vegas Summer League Thoughts....is that Kevin LOVE?

Ooo, man...I guess we have a BIT of a few differing views - but we agree that KL's quickness was/is at issue always...I saw him just too much here in PAC-10 Country - and didn't think he'd be a bust, but a role playing 'Big' that is just not built for the NBA Game....

He had knee issues at LO High Sch., and was built so low to the ground, ect.  Pretty nimble for a Bull, and truly polished low post game - but he had trouble with really long guys - which are on almost every NBA Roster - in spades...

I simply try and picture him v. WESTERN CENTERS and bigs; i.e., Odum, Chandler, Okur,  Bynum - .even the solid 4's of the West, Aldridge, A. Stoudamire, K Martin, M Taylor, West, B Wright, ect... they all have so much more length than Love can compensate for - and his ability to reverse angles, go up and under, and just flat overcome his defender in the post with those drop-step straight power moves, in the post will just be largely eliminated, in my opinion.

One thing he has going for him is his throwback attention to detail and truly outstanding technique in Post....I know this will date me a bit, but guys like Cowens and Paul Silas (maybe Unseld), were able to overcome lack of hight and athleticism by superb technique....heard the comparisons to Charles Barkely a lot, too....no real comparison in my mind other than body shape....Chuck could LEAP out of the gym - which a lot of heavier guys can do, regardless of perception (seen it dozens of times - and a lot of heavy guys and gals can run the floor amazingly well, too....when the sleek, slender ones often wither away.)

i was absolutely blown away by Love's pin-point, laser guided outlet passes to Afflollo, Westbrook, et al.  In HS, I figured he was just a Man Child, and it probably looked more impressive than it would at the College level.

Maybe his Body is now very much like all the other Rooks - but I'm telling you - the transformation impressed me immensely - just take a look at a few shots from Dec. 07....He's doing his 'Due Diligence', that's for sure.

Can't wait to see him on the Court for REAL in November!

Re: Early Vegas Summer League Thoughts....is that Kevin LOVE?

Just saw this and wanted to share...

A lot of general managers, coaches and fans are hoping that what happens in Vegas, doesn't really stay in Vegas when it comes to the performances of their players at NBA Summer League. They want some of the experiences and lessons learned to carry over to October when the basketballs get rolled out for real -- that goes for the positive experiences and the negative ones, too.

Since we are at the midway point of the 10-day, 53-game extravaganza, let's take a quick look at some of the best and worst so far.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Jerryd Bayless, Blazers

In both of the games he has played, he has been the best player on the court and it hasn't been close. Using his speed and exceptional handle to set up defenders, the combo guard has made a living at the charity stripe, attempting a two-game total of 39 freebies (making 31). He followed up his 28-point, four-rebound debut against the Wizards by hanging 26 and six on the Kings.

BEST SINGLE-GAME PERFORMANCE: Donte' Greene, Rockets

His 40-point outburst against the Suns may have been the greatest game in NBA Summer League history. How can you argue? In 36 minutes, he didn't commit a turnover, needed only 20 shots to get his 40, drained 50 percent of his 10 3-point attempts and added three rebounds, three assists and two steals. And his team won.

WORST SINGLE-GAME PERFORMANCE: George Hill, Spurs, and Julian Wright, Hornets

When training camps open, nobody will remember, but for now it's hard to forget Hill missing all 10 of his shots against the Hornets from both close range and afar. Throw in the fact that he was floored by a Hilton Armstrong pick and it just wasn't a good night.

Wright's opening day line of 12 points on 4-for-17 shooting with 11 turnovers was as ugly as the numbers seem.

    BIGGEST SURPRISE: Bobby Brown, Hornets

He has faced the Grizzlies' Mike Conley, the Bobcats' D.J. Augustin and the Spurs' George Hill and come out as the best point guard on the floor each time. The unheralded playmaker is good not only at dialing up his own number -- scoring 46 points on just under 50 percent shooting -- but also at getting good looks for his teammates (18 assists).

    BEST REBOUNDER: Kevin Love, Timberwolves

Houston fans may have beef with me on this selection since Mike Harris is tied with Love for the rebounding lead -- although they have played only one game each. But Love gets the nod because I watched him fight for every ball that came off the glass/rim like his life depended on it and because Harris' numbers are inflated since they came in the how-quickly-can-we-shoot-game between Houston and Phoenix.

    BEST PLAYMAKER: Ramon Sessions, Bucks

He is very good at changing up the speed of play, controlling the game and taking what the defense gives him. Against the Grizzlies, he took just four shots, but handed out a game-high nine assists. He was more shot-oriented yesterday against the Pistons, scoring 21 points on 6-for-11 from the field, but still found time to give out four helpers, while reducing his turnovers from seven to two.

    BEST DEFENDER: Julian Wright, Hornets

On offense, he has been turnover prone. Luckily, he has a tendency for making up for his miscues on the other end of the floor. He has thrived at jumping into passing lanes and picking up loose balls. Through three games, he is averaging 1.3 blocks and 3.0 steals per outing.

BEST INJURED PLAYER: Eric Gordon, Clippers

Although he didn't shoot well, Gordon gave L.A. fans a glimpse of the future, averaging 19 points and 6.5 rebounds in two games before shutting it down with a strained left hamstring.

    BEST DUNK: O.J. Mayo, Grizzlies

Here is some friendly advice to the Hornets' Hilton Armstrong. Next time get out of the way.

BEST BUZZER BEATER: O.J. Mayo, Grizzlies

Proof that practice does make perfect, the third pick made a 69-foot heave at the buzzer against the Spurs.

    GREAT STUFF, MATTY!

HEY, DJ AUGUSTIN IS PUTTIN TOGETHER SOME NICE NUMBERS.....

Milw. Sessions IS also running the floor beautifully in vegas....even with the rat-ball mentality out there...even more impressive in this setting how he is maintaining some organization and coaching on the floor

Philly Mareese Speights is looking very solid on the glass, as is Sac non-rook, Dukie Sheldon Williams

Cleveland's JJ Hickson - 60% FG, 22/gm is also a standing out as an early steal for the Cavs....really heady player.

Lastly, After watching Aaron Affloalo at UCLA - I was so impressed by his quickness and how much breakaway speed he had and ability to separate and/or close ground as a defender....His 56% shooting and 15/ppg does not surprise me a bit.

Two dark-horse Players for MVP - if they have monster games in last few....Belinelli (GOL), Joey Dorsey and even Hickson if he keeps up his pace....

Can't wait to see Bayless tomorrow night and Sunday....gonna check out this "3BA" Tonight in Portland before flying down to LV....Portland's team is coached by Benson Techster Grad, OSU Beaver Alum (oh, and former LAL player), AC Green.

FULL COURT, 3 on 3, 18 second shot clock....Dan Dickau among others on Portland Roster....oughta be interesting!  I'd love to get more detailed on Vegas - when I have more time!

    Awesome review....can't get enough.

I told you guys, DJ Augustin is a bad ass PG...so good that Jordad decided he didn't care that they had just drafeted Felton at 5.

Re: Early Vegas Summer League Thoughts....is that Kevin LOVE?

NOT SURE IF THIS IS GETTING INTO THE BOARD - BLACKBERRY TEXTING FROM VEGAS.

I WAS AN AUGUSTIN CONVERT AS SOON AS NATE MACK SAID THAT DJ 'WOULD BE THE BEST POINT GUARD ON OUR ROSTER RIGHT NOW' AFTER WORKING OUT FOR 'ZERS - NM DOES NOT DISH OUT COMPLIMENTS LIKE THAT- ESP. NOT WHEN HE WANTS TO TRY AND NAB A GUY AT 11 OR 12...

I LOVE BAYLESS SO FAR, BUT THOUGHT BLAZERS SHOULD GO ALL OUT AND GET THE GUY THEY REALLY WANTED - AND IT IS THE ONE PC. THEY STILL NEED - A TRUE, AUTHENTIC '1'

APPARENTLY MADE FULL CT PRESS FOR TOR CALDERON, BUT CAN'T ENTICE RAPTORS TO LIFT RESTRICTED LABEL...USED TO BE EASY TO LURE ANYONE FROM RAPTORS - NOW EXCHANGE RATE IS REVERSED (BUT ABOUT EVEN WITH DUAL CITIZENSHIP / TAX STATUS, ECT).

FORGIVE ME IF THIS MSSG IS MESSED UP --= NOT EVEN SURE IT'S GETTING THRU.

Re: Early Vegas Summer League Thoughts....is that Kevin LOVE?

NOT SURE STRAWBERRY IS GONNA WORK AT THE POINT...

I KNOW VEGAS IS ABOUT SEEING WHAT WILL WORK, AND EXPERIMENTING, BUT HE'S A LITTLE TOO QUICK TO SHOOT....NICE PASSING FROM WINGS OFF THE FREE-LANCE PHOENIX STYLE...

SUNS ARE RUNNING SO MANY WEAVES....STRAW COULD HAVE DONE WELL TO RE-CONSTRUCT HIS SHOT, ALTHOUGH IT'S A HIGH RELEASE - IT COMES OFF TOO HEAVY WITH THE CHOPPY HALF BENDER STROKE.

    MAN, THIS GYM IS WARM!
