Big week here in Columbia. Nothing like a win to lift spirits and confidence, albeit against the Eagles from Eastern Michigan. But, the fact is they made some big plays and did win in a blow out. Been a long time since the Tigers did that, to anybody. Now the locals including sports talk show hosts are feeling full of piss and vinegar as Kirby Smart brings his Bulldogs into town for a saturday night rumble. I was at my local sports bar I hang at when I go out and earlier this week overheard three of the players eating some wings and talking. I can tell you this, they had no shortage of self confidence going into this week. And of course that is a good thing. I hate to rain on any parades but I still have my doubts. Georgia is an entirely different animal than Eastern Michigan. The one thing nobody seems to want to talk about is the miserable kicking game thus far. That could play a key role in who cashes the ticket from a betting standpoint this weekend.
Cardinals fans, including myself, are just having a tough time getting too excited about the wildcard chase. They are just too inconsistent for much confidence to be had. They got off to a lousy start last night against the Giants. There was one play that had me scratching my head. Johnny Cueto is either lazy or lacks an understanding of fielding his position. There was a play where he should have been backing up the base but just stood in the middle of the infield as an observer. As for the Royals they are just sinking miserably. The Oakland A's just came into Kansas City and beat the living hell out of the defending champs. It was depressing to watch. Now Ned Yost is coming under fire again. Yes, Ned can be a jerk and often is. But the fact is he did take that club to two straight world series appearances and won one. As is always the case, what have you done lately.
A lot of people were laughing at the Rams and that dud of an opener against the 49ers. That offense looked inept. That is about the kindest way I can put it. The capper in me tells me they rebound this week and play Seattle a lot tougher than many suspect. As for the Chiefs fans they are still crowing about the big comeback. I will stick with my opinion that they had better be thankful Keenan Allen went out with his injury, had that not happened I still say San Diego would have flown out of Kansas City with a big division win under their belts. Big test for the Chiefs this sunday as they venture back to Houston. The Texans will be waiting with their fangs out.
Like I mentioned earlier this week I am stuck saturday. A 3pm wedding in Kansas City. Good grief. These folks are Kansas fans and big games on college football weekends just does not register. I am a loyal buddy and will be there. But good lord agnes. This is not just right. I will give my buddy some good natured, (mostly) ribbing for allowing this miscarriage of justice.
That was about it for today. Of course the usual politics but that cannot be evaded this time of year. I promised to leave that out of these threads and will do so. Both sides are passionate, I will say that.
Hope everyone has a safe and profitable weekend. Great time of year, college football, NFL and the pennant races. Good stuff. Take care guys.
