Oh brothers that was a long night! I had a big release in play and it was on the Giants and their game with the Dodgers went 14 innings, ending in the wee hours. And not the way I wanted. Here is the deal, maybe some of you have been there. I had a splitting headache and wasn't counting on extra innings so I popped four tylenol pm's hoping to nod off right around the end of the game. Well think again Einstein, into extra innings we go and the damn thing drags on and on. I really have a tough time just going to sleep when I have a big game hanging. But the pills had kicked in and it was a real treat there towards the end, lol.
We were talking about it at breakfast and it reminded me of a Cardinals and Mets game I was in my bedroom as a kid listening to back in september of 1974. My dad came up to my bedroom to ask how the game was going about the 8th inning or so. I told him the Cards were down a couple of runs. He sat down in my room to listen with me as Jack Buck called the game. Well, the Cardinals scored a pair of runs in the top half of the ninth frame to square things up and off to extra innings we went. My dad said, oh what the hell I can't leave it now. So we listened to the remainder of the game. And we listened, and we listened. The game went on for 25 damn innings. The Cardinals finally broke loose in the top of the 25th when Bake McBride scored from first on a throwing error. At least the Cardinals won the thing. Would have been a brutally long day the next day for both of us had they not.
Also, the Dodgers and Giants are one of the more intense rivalries in baseball. Much like the Cardinals and Cubs or Yankees and Red Sox. I remember, once again, years ago when Juan Marichal of the Giants turned around and for some reason smacked Dodgers catcher Johnny Roseboro over the head with his bat. Don't believe me, just look it up. It was anarchy. It did little to ease the tension between the two clubs to say the least. I suspect it is on you tube somewhere. Anyway, we all talked about rivalries. What is funny is many of my buddies went to Rock Bridge high school here in Columbia. When I was in school I was a Moberly Spartan, one of their arch rivals back in the day. Now we are close friends and softball teammates. Back then I loathed anything to do with Rock Bridge. Well, all four of my daughters graduated from Rock Bridge. Good grief. Something about that just is not right.
Anyway, that was it for this morning. Please feel free to chime in if you recall a long night at a game or a bitter rivalry. Take care and enjoy your tuesday and yes, good luck.
