How far do you go to increase your chances of winning? Do you bet openers? If you are a Las Vegas resident do you drive across town to get the best number? Do you open up accounts at all the books with betting apps? If you play offshore do you have multiple outs?
While each and every one of these options lead to a higher winning percentage, sometimes it's not so cut and dry. Do you want to tie up part of your bankroll in a book knowing you will rarely play there? Sure you will find an advantage once in a while but is it worth not having that money liquid? You can drive to a hard to get to book and get that extra 1/2 point but it will take you 30 minutes and gasoline to do so. It will also cut a 1/2 hour off your handicapping. Is it still worth it?
One of my favorite stories in this regard involves our friend and current Pregame colleague Steve Fezzik. At our weekly Tuesday meeting Steve would brag about running around town and taking out the last 13 on a college football game while the rest of us had to lay 13 1/2. He couldn't understand how lazy we were to not drive the 30 miles round trip to get the best possible number. Well things changed a bit for Steve once his first child was born. He now felt the cost of getting that extra 1/2 point wasn't always worth the lost hour he could spend with his son. While he still makes every effort to get any advantage possible, he now has other more important time issues to worry about.
As you can see it's great to have the ability to get the best number, but sometimes it comes at a price.
