Who is Your Sleeper Team in CFB this Season?

by Tommy Rider on 07/22/2008 9:54 AM

Tyrell Fenroy and Louisiana Lafayette are one of Tommy Rider's sleeper teams in CFB this season.

As I finish up all my college football work for the upcoming season, I will be posting blog posts on my "bet on" and "bet against" teams soon. But today I was thinking of a team I really like as a sleeper. Now, I like Oklahoma State and North Carolina to be better than some but those teams aren't really sleepers in the true sense of the word. There are a lot of people who like NC to be much better this year and the lines on them in some of the Game of the Years posted back up that point.

I'm talking more about a team flying under the radar that even if they don't have a winning season, will be a moneymaker against the spread throughout the year. My sleeper team to keep an eye on this season is Louisiana Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns won two of their final three games in 2007 and have one of the nation's top ground games led by QB Michael Desormeaux and RB Tyrell Fenroy - who is one of the better unknown players in the country. Lou-Laf also returns four starters along the offensive line to clear the way for its explosive rushing attack.

Granted, the defense was Swiss cheese last year and may not be a whole lot better this season. However. the Ragin' Cajuns opened up as a 14-point underdog against Southern Miss in Week 1 and I think there is a lot of value in that line (Sorry Chuck). Plus, they play road games against Illinois and Kansas State, where they are sure to be huge underdogs. With their 45 returning lettermen and imposing ground game that can control the clock, I like Lou-Laf in the underdog role this year. I think the Ragin' Cajuns have a chance to do some damage in the Sun Belt Conference but more importantly, I believe they will do a lot damage against the pointspread.

Who are some teams you've found during your CFB research that you believe are flying under the radar and could be potential moneymakers this upcoming football season?

WE (Southern Miss) has BEATEN LA-LAF. the LAST SEVEN Times BY 39 POINTS per Game(Last Game 2003 48-3) HOWEVER, This Ragin Cajun Team does have some TALENT & WILL Make a RUN in the SBC! IMO A High SCORING Affair with My GOLDEN EAGLES getting the VICTORY! Prediction:

Southern Miss 38

LA-LAF 24

PUSH ....unless you got the HOOK! LOL

Marshall looks like a solid pick Chuck. I agree with you on that one.

The public will be fading the Wolverines big-time this year. It will be interesting to see how they fair but Michigan still has a lot of talent, that's for sure.

Both Florida Atlantic and New Mexico have a shot at a 10 win season.

I love Ball State this year - they played tough last year and very few people are talking about them winning the MAC.  I think they could have the best QB in the conference in Nate Davis and a great young coach in Brady Hoke, who was briefly mentioned as a potential coach at Michigan before Rodriguez was hired.

Kansas State, their 3rd game of the year at Louisville could be pivotal for the Wildcats.

Those are great additions guys. I agree with all of them. I actually like Florida Atlantic to win the Sun Belt (Watch out Texas), Ball State to win the MAC, New Mexico to compete for the MWC title and Kansas State to be a lot better than a lot of preseason publications think. Excellent list of teams to watch so far. Let's keep it going.

Ole Miss this was the season Ed Orgeron was trying to make it too. When Jevan Sneed would be eligible to play at quarterback. They had impact players on the offensive and defensive line. Houston Nutt inherits more talent at Ole miss than he left at Arkansas.  I can easily see a turnaround to a minor bowl game of some sort, 6-6, 7-5 types season.

tommey not sure where to put this, but i no you will see it here, so i heard that kentucky QB will not be there this year, hasnt been released, but if this is true, maybe you no cuz of your connections, if so louisville would be a good garb at -3. like i said i read this elsewhere

Great info Petey - I was on the radio a couple weeks ago and was asked about this game.  Not sure how you could go wrong taking Louisville -3 at home anyway, but I think you just talked me into betting it.

Petey,

Losing Pulley hurts but from what I've heard, Mike Hartline was more impressive in spring ball and had a slight edge to be the starter heading into the summer. Hartline has a big arm and the UK coaches believe he has a lot more upside than Pulley. But either way, this is a blow because it really hurts the Cats depth at the position.
