NFL Team Win Totals: Chicago Bears Under 8 (Top Play)

by Tommy Rider on 05/19/2008 2:48 PM

Bears Season Win Total Under 8 (-115)
Rider's 2008 Projected Record: 4-12

Are you kidding me with this? So, let me understand, the Bears need to win nine games for us to lose? No way. This is one of the strongest plays Ive had in my 20+ years of gambling.

When I did my breakdown of all 32 teams, the Bears got the worst rating from last years team to this one. I projected a three game decline, which would make them 4-12 this season. That would be a five game difference from my projection to the win total they need to reach for us to lose this wager. This is my fourth year doing these and in the last three (96 projections) Ive NEVER been off by five games.

There are a lot of reasons why I dont think Chicago will reach eight wins this season, but Ill touch on just a couple of the main points here.

--The Bears quarterback situation is one of the weakest in the NFL. First let me state that in my opinion, Kyle Orton cant play quarterback in the NFL. So if thats the option the Bears are forced to turn to, so be it. We win the bet. As for Rex Grossman, I thought he was criticized too much during the Bears Super Bowl year but its apparent he took a major step back last season. Why? Because hes mentally weak. Grossman has the physical skills to play in the NFL but his problem is between the ears.

During the draft, I was doing a story on young quarterbacks in the NFL and the pressure they face to succeed right away. One high-profiled NFL personnel man told me something I found to be interesting.

What a lot of people dont realize is that there is a very fine line between success and failure for a lot of young quarterbacks. Some guys like John Elway and Dan Marino are just supremely talented but those kinds of players are few and far between. Take what happened two years ago in the playoffs. Tony Romo and Rex Grossman both had terrible situations they had to rebound from. One (Romo) overcame it, while the other (Grossman) regressed. I know the Bears feel that he deserves another chance to start but I was really surprised they didnt bring in a veteran to compete for the job. Right now they are hanging by a thread at the quarterback position because if Grossman cant get the job done, they have no where to turn.

In my opinion, this is a problem I dont think Chicago will be able to overcome in 2008.

--The Bears have no gamebreakers on offense. As bleak as the Bears quarterback situation looks, the rest of their offense doesnt offer much hope either. If anyone thinks Lovie Smith is going to replace Cedric Benson before the season starts, just look how long he has stuck by Grossman. Its not going to happen. Can you name the Bears starting wide receivers? Want a laugh? The starting receivers in Chicago arewait for itMarty Booker and Brandon Lloyd. In other words, two guys who cant separate from average NFL cornerbacks. I like rookie Earl Bennett but how much can we expect a first-year receiver playing with a bad quarterback to contribute? Bernard Berrian and Mushin Muhammad may not have been All-Pro receivers but they did combine for 111 receptions, 1,521 yards and eight touchdowns. Overall, the Bears graded out as the worst team in the NFL at receiver according to my point system. Chicagos third receiver is Mark Bradley, who has 38 career receptions in 32 games. Enough said.

--The Bears have no depth. In a previous discussion, Matty pointed out that the Bears had a lot of injuries last season and thats true. I do take that into consideration. However, because the Bears have drafted so poorly in recent years, they have very little depth behind the starters. Take a look at their depth chart on the defensive side of the ball. Their starting group is solid but most of the backups would have trouble making other NFL teams. Thats a product of poor drafting. So, if Chicago has a couple of injuries on the defensive side of the ball, their level of play will drop dramatically, just like it did in 2007.

--The Bears have a tough schedule. Im not a guy that goes through the schedule and says, The Bears will win this game and theyll lose this game.  I think thats a waste of time. No one knows what will happen on any given Sunday. But the reason I say the Bears have a tough schedule is because the division they have to play from the AFC is the AFC South, hands-down the toughest division in football. Indy and Jacksonville are among the AFC Elite, Tennessee is a playoff team from a year ago and Houston continues to improve. Drawing that division isnt going to do the Bears any favors. Take a look at the Bears schedule following their bye week (Titans, Packers, Rams, Vikings, Jags, Saints, Packers, Texans). Thats a tall order for any team. If Chicago is having quarterback issues early in the year, they will be in a whole lot trouble by the time they get to this murderous stretch.

And finally, I just dont like the vibe coming from this Bears team. Benson got arrested, Brian Urlacher wants more money and they are entering the season with a quarterback I dont think the players respects. I always say, if we know a guy sucks, dont you think his teammates know that as well? These guys arent idiots. Just think, how much more excitement would be surrounding the Bears if they had Donovan McNabb instead of Grossman. Think of it as Eric Gagne Syndrome. After a couple of interceptions by Grossman early in the year take a look at the faces on the rest of the players.

So, there you have it. I think a lot of things will need to go right in Chicago for them to reach eight or nine wins. Some will argue that they play in a terrible division. True. But according to my ratings system, they are the worst team in that division. Top to bottom, I dont think the Bears are even close to the Packers and Vikings. Do you think the third or fourth place team in the NFLs weakest division is going to win nine games? I dont. I could go on forever with even more points but this should be enough information for you all to make your own decision. I dont expect Matty to jump on board but like I said, if you are going to follow one play of mine this season, I would advise this be the one. Good luck.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you Tommy.  This looks like a great bet.  Though I notice you failed to mention Gould and Hester.  Are special teams not that important to you when looking at strengths and weaknesses?

Devin Hester should play qb, drop back, and throw bombs to himself for tds...then high jump over the line for the 2 pt conversion...and that should be the only play in their book.

100% Agreed. Makes me want to Fly to Vegas & put 10K on it!

Thanks guys. Chad, I do take into account special teams. But like I said, I could only write so much in one blog post. We all know how great Hester is, there's no doubt about that. However, one special teams coach in that division told me they don't plan on kicking to him once all year. When you look at the Bears offense, my guess is Hester is going to get few chances to return kicks this year, especially in close games. Now, if they start running the Wing T with Hester at QB like you suggested, I may have to re-think this bet because let's be honest, Hester is the only gamebreaker on that team right now.

does betus have these lines?

Valid points Tommy.  You can bet this online right now Chucky so put your money where your mouth is :)

Matty,

How about I bet AGAINST YOU! We can let MARCO hold the MONEY? :)

posted by Matty O'Shea on 05/19/2008 1:14 PM

I'm not stupid Chucky and would rather root for my team rather than make a dumb bet like this.  I think this number is a bit high so there's no way I would put money on it.  Take the free money at the sportsbook :)

Hellerud,

BetUS does not have these yet but I contacted them and they said they should have them within the week.

Matty,

You are right that there is great value here. Teams like the Giants - the Super Bowl Champs - are set at nine wins. Anything can happen but it's just difficult to look at this Bears team right now and think they will have a winning season and that's what needs to happen in order to lose this bet.

posted by thehitman on 05/19/2008 3:53 PM

Lots of value there, but I can't afford to let my money sit in limbo for the next 6+ months

posted by Matty O'Shea on 05/19/2008 3:58 PM

Right, I would have made the line around 6.  You have to take last year's wins and drop them slightly after what's happened in the offseason (NOTHING).  Still, the Bears are a very public team and people remember the Super Bowl a couple years ago.  That may not be a valid point, but it's what the oddsmakers consider when they make these lines.

posted by Tommy Rider on 05/19/2008 4:33 PM

That is a very valid point Matty. People bet on the teams they like. The Bears are one of the most popular teams in the NFL.  The average fan thinks of the Bears and they think Urlacher, they have a good defense, play in a poor division, etc. I thought it would be seven myself but the Bears aren't the only team that's being over-valued. I have a few more solid plays coming based on over-valuing due to public perception as well.

Hitman, that is the one thing that sucks about this. But on the bright side right after Christmas you'll have some extra money coming in, which is nice.

Also, for those of you interested, my next play will be posted on Wednesday. There are still a lot of good plays coming, this just happens to be my favorite.

Love the play T Rider, I'd like to get your thoughts on the detroit lions under 6.5 which I personaly like better.  Detroit has to play the same difficult schedule as the bears (afc south), but I think this team has definitely gotten much worse. First of all, they lost 7 out of their last eight games last year with their win being the chiefs. Second, they lose the heart of their defensive line in shaun Rogers, not to mention firing Mike Martz  who squeezed every ounce of talent out of that offense. Detroits offense improved dramatically with the addition of Martz, now they are going to run the ball more. Behind what offensive line? The teams playmakers are receivers! At least the bears have the ability to win games with their defense and special teams alone (arizona game), even if they are are on the field all game. I think detroit will be 4 - 12 as well, your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Gooch, you make a lot of good points about the Lions. The problem for me betting the Lions is I project them at 6-10, which is basically right on the posted win total. The one thing I would advise against is the fact that they lost seven of their final eight games last year. That really has nothing to do with 2008. If you are asking my opinion, I think there are better win totals on the board to take advantage of but I certainly wouldn't say getting the Lions under is a terrible move. Like I said, I have them at six wins, so 6.5 doesn't represent any value for me. I hope this helped. Good luck with your play. Just keep in mind that Jon Kitna guaranteed 10 wins for like the fifth year in a row. He has to be right sooner or later, doesn't he? lol

Nope, he doesn't LOL

Lions START off with....

At Atlanta.......................GIMME.

VS Green Bay..........Favre couldn't WIN at Detroit...Can't see Rodgers!

At San Fran...........VERY WEAK Club.

Bye

VS Chicago.......?

Could START 4-0? NOT Impossible!!!!

posted by Tommy Rider on 05/20/2008 1:56 PM

Good point Chuck. My guess is they go 2-2 but 4-0 is certainly possible against those four teams. That Bears game is a big one for me. I need the Lions to at least get a split. against Chicago Those are the kind of games where I can't afford to have the Bears rack up wins.

posted by Matty O'Shea on 05/20/2008 1:57 PM

It's impossible Chucky - you guys are so funny giving the Lions so much praise while bashing the Bears.  Both teams SUCK.

posted by Tommy Rider on 05/20/2008 2:00 PM

Matty, I said the Lions would win six games and Gooch wants to bet the under 6.5. I don't think that's very much praise.

"The Lions could surprise a few people if they can get anything resembling a running game going on offense. I really liked the Kevin Smith pick and I think he'll start from Day 1. I also expect Calvin Johnson to blow up this season, teaming with Roy Williams to give Detroit one of the most dangerous receiving tandems in the league."

I've heard this for the past 5 years (not about Kevin Smith though) and will believe it when I see it.

I did my projections and I think they will go 6-10. Holy Shit. The Bears rule Matty. OK? Bears No. 1. Cubs rule. Bulls rule. Blackhawks rule. Everyone from Chicago rules. Are you happy now?

posted by Matty O'Shea on 05/20/2008 3:47 PM

I said both teams SUCK earlier so I'm not being a homer here.  I am simply tired of people giving props to the Lions for nothing that they have accomplished.  I recall Matt Millen is still employed by the Lions, is he not?  That's my point.

But yes, the Cubs do rule :)

posted by Matty O'Shea on 05/20/2008 3:53 PM

One more thing and I'm done with this topic until the regular season kicks off.  I have not once said the Bears are a playoff-caliber team or that they "rule."  I said they could compete in the worst division in football, period.

I'm putting together MY NFL Team Totals. Got any more you really like?

I bet under for the Bears and Bucs so far Chuck. I think I'm going down this week to bet under for the Browns. Like I wrote earlier, I look at this team and I just don't see it. Also, I'm going to take a shot with the 49ers over. I think they may surprise in that division. Good luck.
