What is the Last Great Movie You Saw?

by Tommy Rider on 05/16/2008 10:06 AM

As I get ready to watch No Country for Old Men this Saturday, I can't help but temper my enthusiasm. That's because every time I get excited about seeing a movie, I end up being disappointed. The most recent example of this was American Gangster, a movie I was dying to see. While the movie certainly wasn't terrible, I was expecting a lot more. I thought they could have spent more time telling me how Denzel Washington got to that point in his life but they chose to go in a different direction that I thought was kind of boring at times.

That brings me to my main point, it's not the acting that's been absent in movies lately, it's the writing. The best example of this is Ray. I thought Jamie Foxx was amazing but the writing was awful. In a 3+ hour movie, how many times are they going to show me Ray Charles shoot heroin? We get it, he was a drug addict. But I'm assuming this guy was a pretty interesting individual. Why not make the storyline more diverse? Instead, the writers spend three hours telling me he did drugs and cheated on his wife. Great. I seriously could have shot that movie in 15 minutes.

The last two really good movies I've seen are The Departed and Cinderella Man. I actually was a little disappointed in The Departed when I first saw it (Probably because it was so hyped up) but after watching it 20 more times, I've grown to really like it. Cinderella Man is one of the better movies I've seen regardless of genre. Tremendous writing and acting all around in that movie.

So, is it just me? Are you guys watching a bunch of great movies that I don't know about it? I would love to hear some feedback on this. And if you mention No Country for Old Men, please don't give away the plot. My entire weekend revolves around watching that movie. It's funny. I used to spend my weekends banging hot young blonds. Now it centers around watching a movie with my wife and mowing the lawn. Hurry up and get married everyone. It's a real blast.

Cinderella Man was a vastly underrated film.  I'm with you on The Departed also.  I saw it on DVD an was dissappointed because I felt it didn't live up to hype, however, after seeing bits and pieces a few times on HBO, I've grown to appreciate it.

As far as recent films, I was surprised by how well I liked Iron Man.  I'm not a comic book guy and I'm not real big on superhero movies but I thought this one was great.  Robert Downey Jr is an outstanding actor.  Check him out with Val Kilmer in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.  Good little genre flick written by the same guy that penned Lethal Weapon.

I liked "There Will Be Blood" and thought "Gone Baby Gone" was also a good flick.  "No Country For Old Men" was ok, but I'm not a big fan of movies that use extra violence to make a point.

Not great, but really good, Iron Man.

Suprised how entertaining it was.

Looking forward to that one JD - I take it that one's a must-see in the theater rather than waiting for it to come out on DVD.

I agree with Iron Man. I'm not a superhero guy either but that one looks pretty good and I've heard a lot of people tell me they liked it. I refuse to go to the movie theaters. I stopped going two years ago because every time I went I wanted to plow some jerk in the face. Someone is either yelling or talking on their cell phone and at my age, it's just not worth getting bent out of shape over those kind of things, although I still think those people should be killed. So I'll have to wait for it to come out on DVD.

Matty,

I hear good things about "There will be Blood" as well, so I'll have to check it out.

Just saw Rambo (yes the 1982 version) - best action movie ever.

RJ,

You know why that movie is so good? Because Stallone goes about an hour without speaking. lol I've seen the movie 100 times but it was only a few years ago I was watching it and realized that after Stallone escapes from the police, he doesn't say another word for like 45 minutes. It's too bad he didn't use that method in some of his other flicks (Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, for instance).

By the way, you just saw Rambo? There's another pretty good movie out called "The Godfather." You should check it out. lol

Wow RJ, you just saw Rambo?  How is life in Pleasantville?

Chad,

You brought tears to my eyes with that one. The Pleasantville line was a gut buster.

Wasn't it called First Blood?

posted by Tommy Rider on 05/16/2008 8:51 PM

Yes, the official name of the movie is First Blood, although over time a lot of people started referring to it as Rambo.

Not to be confused with Rambone, Floridachad's ill-fated attempt at becoming an adult film star.

Mine was in the classic, Forrest Hump.

Speaking of Sylvester Stallone movies,  and how they might be better with less of him talking,   I actually thought  "Rocky Balboa"  was pretty good,   except you can tell that he wrote it,  and it's very difficult to keep from laughing out loud at some of the lines,   and not because they are supposed to be funny,   but because they were written by someone who isn't funny (Stallone)  and isn't a writer,  trying to be funny.      It just makes me smile.    God bless him for trying.

Ugh, I just watched Rocky Balboa this week.  I thought it sucked.  Less talking, more boxing.

TR,

What did you think about the Movie?

posted by Tommy Rider on 05/21/2008 5:28 PM

I thought it was excellent Chuck. A nice simple, well written script with great acting. Javier Bardem deserved every award he won. That was truly one of the great characters in movie history. He scared you every time you saw him just sitting in a chair. I didn't love the ending but other than that I was happy with the movie. I actually saw Million Dollar Baby for the first time this weekend as well. I thought that was also very good so I went two for two. What did you think of the ending in Old Country for Old Men?

The Ending was kind of Strange. That seen in the Gas Station was CLASSIC! The words "Call It" has a NEW Meaning for me!

I also enjoyed Million Dollar Baby.
