The Raiders Continue to Improve

by Tommy Rider on 05/14/2008 10:38 AM

The Oakland Raiders made another move to try to upgrade their defense by signing free agent defensive end Greg Spires to a one-year contract. Spires will compete for a job at right defensive end in Oakland.

The Raiders have been looking for someone to complement left end Derrick Burgess since losing Chris Clemons as a free agent to Philadelphia. Oakland signed Kalimba Edwards from Detroit earlier this offseason and drafted Trevor Scott in the sixth round from Buffalo. But Spires - who has recorded 39.5 sacks in his 10-year NFL career - is the leading candidate to start on the right side for the Raiders.

The Raiders had the 25th rated defense in the NFL last season on the way to a 4-12 record. But they have made moves this offseason to improve that side of the ball, trading for shutdown cornerback DeAngelo Hall from Atlanta, signing safety Gibril Wilson and re-signing defensive lineman Tommy Kelly.

In my opinion, these kind of signings tend to fly under the radar. Oakland is a young team that can lack leadership at times. Now they add a guy like Spires - who was part of a Super Bowl winning team in Tampa - and the Raiders just don't get better on the field,  they also add some much needed leadership in the locker room.

I really think this Oakland team is ready to improve. It's a shame Al Davis is causing so many internal problems and won't think of the good of the franchise he built and step down. Trust me, I've seen the guy in person. He looks like the walking dead. Davis has no business making the final decisions on important matters, and most inside the organization recognize this simple fact. Point in case, most people think Kiffin did a solid job in Oakland last season and Davis wanted to fire him. The guy is completely senile.

However, even with Davis holding onto the decision-making duties like grim death - which isn't far off for him by the way - I still like the Raiders to win 7-8 games this season. Actually, over the Raiders win total will be one of my biggest wagers this offseason. The lines aren't out yet but I expect Oakland to start at 5.5 wins. If so, I will pounce on it. I will almost guarantee six wins by a much-improved Raider team, even if the owner is going crazy.

What do you guys think of the Raiders this season? How many games do you see them winning and do you like my over play at 5.5 wins?

tight number at 5.5.  I think they get 6 with beatable teams like KC (twice), Miami, Atlanta on the schedule this year, and they should probably expect themselves to beat Denver in at least one of the two meetings.  They may also give NYJ a run as well, but when it comes to playing the Chargers, Panthers, Patriots and Texans I think they will still prove to be too green.  The TB game in week 17 maybe a nothing game that could also be winnable for them.  5.5 is too close a number for me to tamper with, but if I had to choose I would bet the over, but just over.  Raider fans should have a lot more to cheer about this year though, as the team should be going the right direction for a change.

You're right Tommy - it's time for the old Syracuse grad to step down and let his team "just win baby" lol

Matty,

Al Davis went to Syracuse? I never knew that.

Good input Sweat Hog. The only thing I would say is I don't get caught up too much looking at the schedule. In the NFL today, there is too much change from year-to-year. I'm sure last season most people would have expected the Saints to be a much tougher opponent than the Browns and they would have been incorrect. Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting the the Raiders to beat the Patriots, but on the other hand - with the Chargers being a division game - I wouldn't be shocked if they upset them. I just think looking at the team as a whole, I see a 7-8 win squad if things go their way. I'm sure there will be a lot of tight games during the year that will determine if Oakland wins four games or if they win eight games. Those are the ones you have to hope go your way in my opinion.

Remember, last year Oakland lost eight games by a touchdown or less. In my experience, teams that lose a lot of close games one season, get a few of those the following year. In other words, I think the Raiders played much better than their final record indicated in 2007.

Well, let's do the buffet of choice in Vegas.  Dinner will be costly LOL

Good, now I have a reason to watch that Raiders/Broncos game on opening night. That's worth the price of a buffet in its own right. lol

Do you have any news on Kiffin?  Last I had heard a few months back was that he was getting the axe, since then I haven't heard a thing about it, I guess he's good to go for this season.

Davis wanted him out but pretty much everyone else in the organization wanted him to stay. Kiffin actually wanted to leave to take a college job but in the end, neither wanted to pay out  the large sum of money to break the contract. Sounds like a well-run franchise, doesn't it? lol

TR,

Agree on Al Davis & Raiders improvement. Still not SOLD on Jamarcus Russell at QB.

I think Russell has all the physical tools Chuck, the deciding factor will be what is between his ears. Some people have told me, "Not much." lol
