Pac 10 Conference Tournament Preview

The Pac 10 has caught a lot of flack for being down this year and deservedly so. There isn’t one dominant team in the league that looks to be a threat to make it to the Final Four. California is however the best team in this conference and have to be regarded as the favorites. They won the regular season crown going 13-5 in conference play, finishing one game ahead of Arizona State. Arizona State could pose some problems for Cal but they did lose both meetings during the year. ASU is 22-9 but in watching them a few weeks ago against Cal, they simply seemed overmatched.

The only other team to post more than 20 wins overall is the Washington Huskies. Washington won a majority of their games in the friendly confines of their home court which is a very tough place to play in Seattle. They struggled mightily away from home and it will be a big test for them to play in Los Angeles on a neutral floor against the likes of California and Arizona State. The Arizona Wildcats round out the list of teams that finished with an above .500 record in conference action, going 10-8. However, they are just 16-14 overall and have failed to show that they are a consistent winning team that should be taken seriously in this tournament. After Arizona there is a tremendous drop off in terms of talented teams. Perennial powerhouse UCLA finished just 8-10 in the Pac 10 and 13-17 overall. It looks as if the Bruins will not be headed to the post-season unless Ben Howland can find a magic potion to make his team to be competitive against the likes of California, Arizona State, and Washington.

Cal has shown to be the most consistent team in this conference and have beaten the top tier teams in the league at least once this year. They are undoubtedly the team to beat but that’s not to say they aren’t susceptible to an upset. Arizona State has enough scoring power to take out Cal despite failing to beat them in the regular season. Washington has to prove they can win away from home as they were manhandled on the road by California. Arizona will have to play perfect basketball in order to have any chance to take home the Pac 10 Conference Tournament crown and after them, there really are no threats or dark horses that are capable of winning this tournament, Cal is the best team and has beaten the other top teams and boast the most impressive resume for an at-large bid should they stumble in the conference tournament.

Big 12 Conference Tournament Preview

Kansas is the top team in the country and by far the most talented team in the Big 12. Everyone will be gunning for the Jayhawks in order to solidify an automatic bid. Kansas checks in at 29-2 overall and 15-1 in conference play. The next best team in the conference is arguably Kansas State and Kansas has already beaten them twice this year including a double digit drubbing a few weeks ago in Lawrence. Kansas State is 11-5 in conference play, tied with Baylor for the second best conference record. Baylor showed the country that they are a solid squad with great guard play by easily handling Texas last weekend. Great guard play is a key to success in post-season play and Baylor may be a team to watch in this tournament.

Texas A&M is another team with a lot of talent that could not only do some damage in their conference tournament but also in the field of 64. They lost to Kansas in a hard fought battle a few weeks ago but certainly showed that they could hang with the best team in the country. A&M too is 11-5 in Big 12 play and boasts an overall record of 22-8. Besides the team previously mentioned, the only other team that has a chance of making some noise in this tournament is Missouri who finished 10-6 in conference play. However, they have lacked consistency throughout the year and will have to play their best basketball to win this tournament and that might not even be enough as Kansas romped all over this Mizzou squad on their home court this past Saturday.

Texas and Oklahoma State both have 20+ wins but neither team can be taken as a serious contender to win the Big 12 Championship. Texas completely fell apart after being ranked number one in the country earlier in the year and finished with just a 9-7 record in Big 12 play. Oklahoma State on the other hand does have a signature win over Kansas so they may have a small chance at taking the automatic bid but they too have not been able to string together enough consistent wins to put them in the upper echelon of teams in the Big 12 Conference.

All things considered, there are a lot of talented teams in this tournament but Kansas is in a league of their own. It will most likely come down to how motivated they are to get the number 1 overall seed. If they bring their A game into this tournament, there’s not a team that can beat them. However, if they let up there are certainly a few teams like Kansas State, Baylor, and Texas A&M that could sneak up on them and steal a win. But for now it’s Kansas’ championship to lose.

Big East Conference Tournament Preview

Year in and year out, the Big East is always the most wide open conference tournaments. This due to the strength of the league as the Big East boasts eight teams with at least 20+ wins. Syracuse won the regular season title posting a 15-3 conference record, finishing 2 games ahead of Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Syracuse, however, took a step backward as the number one team in the country on Saturday as they got stomped by a Louisville team who is the true dark horse in this tournament.

Pittsburgh and West Virginia have both been playing extremely well and either one could give Syracuse a run for their money. Pitt has won eight of their last nine, their only slip up coming on the road against a streaky Notre Dame club who is peaking at the right time even with out their best player, Luke Harrengoty. Villanova is another team with a 13-5 record in Big East action, however they have struggled mightily down the stretch here in late February and early March. They do have experience and great guard play which seems to be recipe for post-season success in college basketball so you can’t count them completely out.

After the four teams mentioned earlier, there are some dangerous teams who could burst some bubbles by pulling off upsets. Marquette, Louisville, Notre Dame are all capable of beating any team at any given point. However, there seems to be a small drop off in the talent level of these second tier teams. You never though as we just witnessed Louisville romp all over Syracuse, the number one seed in the tournament. As stated earlier, this is probably the toughest tournament to predict year and year out because the conference is so strong. It seems like anyone could beat anyone on any given night.

The Big East will be won by the team that plays up to their full potential. This is most definitely the strongest conference in college basketball and should be interesting to see who takes home the hardwood. Syracuse is the favorite but they better bring their A game or they could certainly be upset by a less talented team. Whoever comes to play, takes care of the basketball, and plays great defense will ultimately decide the outcome of the tournament. Don’t be surprised though if the Big East gets 8 teams into the field of 64 unless a team like Georgetown or South Florida could burst someone sitting on the bubble.

Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Preview

There are three teams in the top tier of the Atlantic 10 Conference and all three have a great shot at winning this tournament. Temple is obviously the favorite as they enter the post-season with an overall record 26-5 and an outstanding conference record of 14-2. The next best team in the conference hands down has got to be Xavier. Remember Xavier went on the road and beat a pretty good Florida team. They are also 14-2 in conference play and lost their lone match-up to Temple by a final score of 77-72 at Temple. These two teams along with Richmond have been very kind to bettors wagering on them all season long. Temple is 20-11 ATS, Xavier is 19-10 ATS, and Richmond is 17-9 ATS.

Temple has been a good team all year and they do it by playing great defense. They are only allowing 56.8 points per game which makes them the 4^th best scoring defense in the entire country. Their main weakness that could hurt them in this tournament is their lack of consistent shooting. One of the two teams to defeat Temple in conference play is Richmond who thumped Temple 71-54 in their only meeting of the year. Richmond is a dangerous team and one to certainly keep an eye on as the A-10 tournament unfolds. Much like Temple, Richmond is a dominant defensive team. They are ranked 33^rd in the country in points allowed per game and 16^th in field goal percentage defense.

The second tier of this conference is made up of St. Louis, Rhode Island, Charlotte and Dayton. St. Louis could be a dark horse in this tournament as they have put together in an impressive campaign going 20-10 overall and are also 15-9-1 against the number. Dayton and Charlotte have talent but have not been playing particularly well as of late and that’s not how you want to enter a tough, physical A-10 conference tournament. Out of all the teams in the second echelon, St. Louis has been the most consistent as they are 11-5 in conference play and also have 20 overall wins. St. Louis certainly a bubble team and will definitely be playing their hearts out to make it to the Big Dance.

This should be one of the more competitive tournaments this week as they are arguably 4 teams that have a great chance in winning it. Temple has been rock solid all year long and their great defense might be enough to carry them to the winner’s circle. The question is; how motivated are they going to be as they already know they will be in the tournament regardless of what they do in this tournament. If they are motivated, they will be the team to beat.

Kentucky Seeks Revenge

The Kentucky Wildcats will be looking to avenge their only loss of the entire season when they play host to South Carolina on Thursday night. As this is a classic revenge situation, odds makers have the proper adjustments by installing Kentucky as 16½ point home favorites over the Gamecocks. South Carolina won by a final score of 68-62 on January 26^th led by Devan Downey who scored 30 points in that game. The biggest problem he gave Kentucky was his ability to dribble penetrate into the lane and get to the free throw line where he scored 10 of his 30 points. Also, helping the cause was the fact that Kentucky turned the ball over 15 times and you simply cannot do that if you want to win on the road in the SEC.

South Carolina heads into this game with virtually no chance at making the NCAA Tournament unless they somehow win the SEC Tournament in a few weeks. They are 14-12 overall and two games under .500 in SEC play at 5-7. The Gamecocks have not been profitable as they are just 9-14 ATS and are 1-8 SU on the road this season. South Carolina has lost 4 of its last 5 games straight up and against the spread. Their most recent loss came at home where Tennessee took care of business by a final score of 63-55 as just 1½ point road favorites. The biggest problem over those five games has been poor defense as South Carolina has allowed opponents to score an average of over 74 points per game and hit nearly 50% of their shots from the field. They will have to tighten up big time on defense if they want to have any shot at beating Kentucky a second time.

What can you say about Kentucky? They are ranked 2^nd in the nation and have ripped off seven straight wins since losing their only game of the season at South Carolina. They have great guards and great bigs and are extremely hard to stop on the offensive side of the floor. They are led by John Wall who is averaging 17.0 points a game and DeMarcus Cousins who is averaging over 10 rebounds per game. The only concern about this Kentucky team is their lack of veteran leadership. They definitely have the talent to win a national championship but when it comes to crunch time in late March or early April will their inexperience be their Achilles heel? As for tonight, they should be able to take care of business over a struggling South Carolina team but the real question is will they be able to cover the lofty point spread. Sixteen and a half points is a lot to spot a team in conference play but a motivated Kentucky team has the capability of blowing South Carolina out, but we all know that doesn’t mean that they will.
