Sports Betting, Fixed Games, Point Shaving, and Lies

by RJ_Bell on 11/25/2008 8:14 AM

The "National Football Post" asked me for an article on game fixing, and I was happy to oblige such a respected website.

A question being asked is:  was the Steelers game "fixed" against the Chargers Sunday?

The odds are overwhelming that it was not, but the NFL and all sports leagues need to understand why a majority of fans seem to think it was.

Sports betting is bigger than anyone thinks it is. 380 BILLION dollars a year is gambled worldwide according to published estimates. If all sports bets were pooled, the bettors could buy every major pro sports franchise in existence. And that's only from one year's wagers. That ownership group could show Mark Cuban a thing or two about risk taking!

Yet, the leagues want to ignore this reality. It is one thing to actively discourage betting; but to ignore a multi-billion dollar fact is dangerous.

With so much money at stake, corruption is likely to occur. Indeed, if United States Congressmen are unable to resist bribes without fail, how can we expect college kids with no sports future to do so? It's all about economics - pro athletes are much less likely to fix a game - while college athletes and game officials are more likely to do so.

How likely? Well, numerous academic studies - including one conducted by the NCAA itself (2003 National Study of Collegiate Sports Wagering) - conjecture that approximately 1% of college games are in some way corrupt. That number means that there's something funny about dozens of college games a year!

In my opinion, if the sports leagues took an honest position that they would do everything possible to prevent corruption and admit that prevention cannot be surefire, fans would respond enthusiastically, as that is exactly what the fans believe! But the leagues do themselves a disservice when they claim to be incorruptible, and the fans rightfully believe that to be a lie. After the Steelers game, 80% of the posts at the Pregame.com forum claimed the game was fixed. In today's environment, whenever fans see something funny, it's considered proof of the big lie told by the professional sports leagues.

Consider the response to Sunday's game. The NFL partner networks initially ignored the matter. Then the outlets reported the story, some in snickering fashion, many using my estimate of $100 million bet on the game. "No way betting is that big," cried those with no idea. However, I could make the case - backed by hard data - that double that amount was bet on the game.

Then the media started calling Vegas home of some of the most knowledgeable sportsbook pros on the planet. Yet many of them have the same agenda as the sports leagues, which is to avoid rocking the boat. If these outlets spoke with complete candor, business might be disrupted. Although most technically tell the truth to the media, it is done with an effort to minimize possible scandal.

My allegiance is to the sports bettor - which means debunking the big lie. Funny thing, a deeper conversation would have revealed the Steelers game to be less likely to have been fixed. Game fixers are bettors, so typically fixed games have a lopsided amount of money on the winning side. The Steelers got approximately 66% of the money, but the questionable calls all went the Chargers' way. Encouraging conversation could have brought that fact into the open.

RJ, your second to last line tells the REAL story. Pitt td called back for holding---the lateral return called back---PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME THAT ONLT BETTORS FIX GAMES. Check your history on the 02 Wisky--unlv game @ UNLV ----And tell me WHO PULLED THE PLUG ON THE STADIUM LIGHTS? THE BOOKS WERE ABOUT TO TAKE A HUGE HIT---- The NFL participates in such------ and the Pittsburg game was a blatant example. I don't have an appetite for what you're feeding us. We're better off taking our chances with CFB----corruption doesn't go that far up the chain.

Hard to imagine a league with the value of the NFL would risk it all fixing games to bet on them.

Rj....why? Sports are not about competition brother. Its about money. Billions of dollars is being made in nfl on investing in games by everyone, players included. One says why would a player who is making millions need to wager on a game, or take a bribe to throw a game???

Simple answer is this. Human nature is that we always want more and more and spend more than we make.

Those of us who make 100,000 spend 200,000. These guys who make 10 million, spend 20 million. No one ever gets tired of desiring more money no matter how much they make. In fact, the more one makes the more they greed for more.

It doesnt bother me that all these games whether its nfl, mlb, nba, nhl, and certainly college games are all rigged anymore. Once one understands the power of greed they will understand the reason they are all fixed.

latstly, sports is no different than a broadway show, a movie a tv show. The endings are scripted, the authors directors and stars know the endings.

It's all about the mighy dollar! Remember that NBA official? I think there are some refs in the NFL like that but I don't think players or coaches have anything to do with fixing games.

The real people running the NFL are the owners, some of whom have business ties to some very questionable people.

Here's a question; Why does the NFL refuse to hire full-time officials?

Here's a question; Why spend so much time reviewing a play that has no bearing on the actual outcome of the game?

To assume that the fixers would automatically be on the same side of the majority of the public action is kind of ridiculous.  If you were going to fix a game, why would you fix it in the direction of the public action.

"Game fixers are bettors, so typically fixed games have a lopsided amount of money on the winning side. "

The is true if you were fixing a very small game that normally doesn't have a lot of action wagered on it.  why would should say is, "Fixed games that have been exposed, were exposed by an abnormal betting amount on that game and on one side"

However, you were just making the point that 200 million dollars could have been wagered on that game.  There is no possible way to tell how much of that 200 million is corrupt action that is involved the in the fix.

There is a very large possibility that the Refs could have been making sure that the Steelers did not cover that game for the sole purpose of helping bookies and the Vegas casinos.  It's naive to assume that all the billionaires who run the NFL have absolutely no ties to organized crime and/or any other sports betting related businesses.

"Hard to imagine a league with the value of the NFL would risk it all fixing games to bet on them."

re you serious?  If they know that there is absolutely no way of them getting caught and they know that they will never ever have to logically explain the reasons for calls, then there is no real risk of losing anything.

You do realize that the NFL never gave a logical explanation for the officials mistakes on the that ending.  The explanation by the head of officiating was the most absurd and unrealistic explanation ever and made no sense at all.  There is no logic behind their explanation and it really doesn't explain what happened on the field or why they made those decisions.

Nobody is saying that is definitely a league mandated fix either, but to watch that game and think everything is 'on the up and up' is completely nieve.

As a 17 veteran of Las Vegas and gambling daily, knowing the inter-workings of sportsbooks and very sharp and "in the know Vegas wiseguys"..I doubt the NFL upper echelon has ANY interest in a fix, nor did the owners of these 2 teams in any respect.  Roger Goodell involved in a fix or his staff?  You cannot be serious.!  This guy is so squaky clean you could not shove a greased mustard seed up his ass.

GAMBLING is the 8000 pound elephant always invited to the annual NFL Christmas Party every year, but no one ever buys him a cocktail.  It is a non published law that the NFL knows that gambling drives billions of dollars of revenue into the NFL coffers every year in the form of public interest. high TV ratings and Direct TV sales of NFL packages and now Dish Netowrk sales of the NFL Channel so gamblers can watch those games.

Do you think ANYONE gave a shit about the Chargers and Oakland Thursday Night game?  2 horrible teams, a lopsided out come......Only the gamblers and Las Vegas did...but thats good enough for the NFL folks, they made money.  Does that mean they are fixing games?  COME ON!!

Is there greed?  Everywhere...I agree the 2 human emotions are Greed and More Greed, especially when it comes to gamblers and action junkies.  No doubt.  The NFL and NFL owners have lots of greed but also lots and lot and lots of money already!  I agree with RJ Bell here, the NFL would not risk it all for money, they already have it and will have more doing the way they always have....just put up a quality product, sell it and count the cash.

Could there be a corrupt offical or player, hell yes.  If outed he will be banned for life trust me, just the like the NBA offical.

Gambling scares the brass of any pro sport either at a leauge level or owner level.  David Stern had the NBA All Star Game in Vegas last year and then promptly told ther Mayor of Vegas and a national TV audience he would never place a team in Vegas unless they outlawed all gaming on the NBA.

THINK OF THIS MARKET FOR AN NBA TEAM FOR A MINUTE.  Worldwide exposure, HUGE Sponsors from Casino's, every executive suite sold out, every game attended and seats filled from casinos with comp tickets, people from every country exposed to your product.  The NBA wants nothing to do with it in Vegas....that speaks volumes.

Anyway..a fixed game or games from time to time, possibly, but I assure you no one higher than a corrupt player or official would be involved.

As an avid sports enthusiast/bettor for the past 10 years I have come to the conclusion that almost all professional sports games and even college games are fixed due to gambling.  I.M.O. EVERY SINGLE NATIONALLY TELEVISED GAME IS FIXED.   The fixing is not always apparent at first but as the game progresses the truth is revealed and I believe everyone is in on it coaches players refs owners even the announcers.  Watch for the next lopsided national tv NFL game spread, and bet against public money if its over 70%. Its a guaranteed winner almost always

The Steelers fans shouldn't complain.  The 2005-2006 season was fixed so that the Steelers would win the Superbowl.  If this sounds preposterous, understand that I heard a gentleman named Steve (nicknamed Superbowl Steve) say on shortwave radio that the Steelers would win the rest of their regular season games, then go on to win the Superbowl.  In order to accomplish this, the Steelers had to win 8 games in a row, which isn't impossible.   This man was on the radio program called The Power Hour twice.  I didn't hear him the first time, but I heard him the second time he was on.  This was before the regular season was over with, just before the playoffs.  In between those 2 interviews, the hosts (Dave VonKleist and Joyce Riley) were talking about the first interview with Steve, so that is when I found out about the fix being in on the Steelers winning the Superbowl.  Do a little research on the internet.

And I just got finished watching the Ravens - Titans game.  The Ravens should have lost that game bigtime.  That was pure luck (or was it)?

FIXED is the wrong word to use. In every sport the the rules allow the referees to CONTROL the game. For example, holding or pass interference in football, happens on every play all up to the refs whether they see it or dont or should i say they call it or they dont.  If therefs give a call to another team and take a call from the opposing team, that could have a uge factor on the outcome of these games. ive been betting for 10 years and have seen a lot of shady activity a lot of stuff that just doesnt make sense, ive got examples of calls that were made against my team that arnt even in the rule book

I WAS A BARTENDER IN VEGAS FOR 10 YRS ONE DAY AN NFL WIDE RECEIVER CAME TO THE BAR AND ASKED FOR A COKE.  HE PLAYED FOR THE ST. LOUIS RAMS, DETROIT LIONS AND ATLANTA FALCONS.  I ASKED HIM IF THE NFL GAMES WERE FIXED.  WITH NO HESITATION HE SAID THAT THEY WERE, NOT BY PLAYERS BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOO MUCH TO RISK AND YOU CAN EASILY CREATE SUSPICION BY THE ACTIONS OF YOUR PLAY.  HE SAID THE REFEREES ARE THE ONES THAT FIX THE GAMES ON A REGULAR BASIS!!!!  THIS RECEIVER TOLD ME THAT AN OFFICIAL CAN MAKE CALLS THAT CAN DETERMINE AN OUTCOME OF A GAME AND THAT THEY CAN DO IT DISCREATLY AND STRATEGICALLY WITHOUT GETTING CAUGHT.  ESPECIALLY THE REVIEW OFFICIALS IN THE BOOTHS.  HE EVEN GAVE ME EXAMPLES I WAS BLOWN AWAY. " YOU EVER NOTICE THAT A GAME THAT HAS A HIGH TOTAL NEVER HARDLY HAS ANY OFFENSIVE HOLDING PENALTIES? BECAUSE THE REFS KNOW NOT TO CALL HOLDING ON TWO HIGH POWERED OFFENSES. WHY  TRY AND KEEP IT UNDER THE TOTAL?  SO THEY LET IT GO KNOWING THE GAME WILL GO OVER.  THEY WILL CALL HOLDING LATE IN THE GAME AS A TOLKEN CALL WHEN ITS OBVIOUS THE GAME WILL GO OVER.  DON'T BELIEVE ME? TAKE THE HIGHEST TOTAL ON THE BOARD AND WATCH THE GAME AND SEE HOW MANY HOLDING PENALTIES ARE CALLED. THEN YOU'LL KNOW HOW THE REFS WORK IT.  THE HOLDING PENALTY IS A TRUE DICTATOR OF THE OVER/UNDER IN A GAME.  AND ITS ALL STRATEGICALLY DONE.  YOU WANT PROOF? CHECK THE REPLAYS OF THE HOLDING CALLS IN QUESTION ALOT OF THEM DON'T LOOK LIKE HOLDING AT ALL. THATS IF THE ANNOUNCERS WILL EVEN BREAK DOWN THE REPLAY FOR YOU TO SEE.  HOLDING IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE OF A JUDGEMENT CALL AND WITH JUDGEMENT CALLS YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH IT. MAKE SENSE NOW.  HOW ABOUT THE ILLEGAL BLOCK IN THE BACK CALLS THAT ARE ON SPECIAL TEAMS? YOU EVER NOTICE THAT ALOT OF THOSE CALLS ARE EXTREMELY QUESTIONABLE HERE AGAIN THE JUDGEMENT FACTOR.  GOOD LUCK IF YOU CAN GET A REPLAY AS WELL.  IT SEEMS THAT ALOT OF THESE CALLS ARE MADE ON THE TEAM THATS ON THE WRONG SIDE THROUGHOUT THE GAME!!! IF THE TEAM ON THE WRONG SIDE IS FLIRTING WITH THE LINE THE REF WILL PUT AN IMMEDIATE STOP TO IT BY THROWING THAT ILLEGAL BLOCK IN THE BACK PENALTY TO PROTECT THE TEAM ON THE RIGHT SIDE.  DON'T BELIEVE ME WATCH FOR IT CLOSELY.  THE REFS KNOW WHAT THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH AND THEY EXECUTE IT TO PERFECTION!!!  THIS RECEIVER SPOKE VERY CANDIDLY ABOUT IT AND WITH CONVICTION AND I PERSONALLY BELIEVE HIM. GREED AND CORRUPTION ARE THE VERY FABRIC OF THIS NATION.  IF SWORN IN COUNCIL MEMBERS, U.S. CONGRESSMEN AND OTHER GOVERMENT OFFICIALS ARE CORRUPT DON'T YOU THINK REFEREES CAN BE CORRUPT TOO.

ONE LAST COMMENT, IF YOU CAN CONTROL THE OUTCOME OF A GAME AND GET AWAY WITH IT, WOULD YOU DO IT?  ALOT OF OFFICIALS IN VARIOUS SPORTS ARE DOING IT.  REMEMBER THE HUMAN FACTOR OF GREED AND CORRUPTION.  IF THERE IS ONE TIM DONAGHEY I'M SURE THEIR ARE OTHERS.  DENNIS RODMAN MADE FASCINATING CLAIMS ABOUT CORRUPTED OFFICIALS WHILE A GUEST ON THE "BEST DAMN SPORTS SHOW PERIOD"  YOU TUBE THE EPISODE.  THE TOPIC WAS BROUGHT TO RODMAN'S ATTENTION BY THE HOST BECAUSE THE NIGHT BEFORE BUBBA SMITH MADE A CLAIM THAT THE SUPERBOWL BETWEEN THE JETS AND THE COLTS WAS FIXED.  INTERESTING STUFF.  NOW THIS EX BARTENDER NEEDS A JACK AND COKE. MAKE IT A DOUBLE!

yep,no doubt about it. a tiny fraction of games are fixed.theres no doubt whatever the sec (fixed it) so florida and alabama would be playing for the conf. championship and i mean no doubt.millions and millions of dollars riding on that match-up.I did'nt see the florida game but i had a bet on lsu, alabama and watched the whole game.lsu could have won that game but the officials were not going to let that happen if thry could help it. they did'nt care about the point spread just the outcome.thats the way it is.okay, there will be a similar situation sometime in the future and i plan to be all over it.alabama, florida on the moneyline, bet the frickin farm,i know whos going to win
