Fantasy Football Experts: Johnny Detroit needs your help!

I must admit, despite being around football and gambling since running parlay cards during Junior High, I have never played fantasy football. Watching people in these nerdy little leagues and acting like it was "cool" always annoyed me. Personally, I felt the fantasy football people were people who did not have the balls to focus the energy on handicapping and gamble like a grown up. Alas, over the past couple years I have watched friends check the "in game" stats for the leagues and talk about the trades and how much they win if X happens. My disdain for fantasy football slowly turned into interest and this year I am finally going to play and see what all the excitement is about.

The problem on my end is I have no clue at all on what to do. Is there magazines I should read? A way to rank the players? Systems or philosophy from the fantasy football experts on the forums? This Sunday I am hosting the Fantasy Nerd Herd Party at my house. I guess we will be going over what type of league we want to do and than draft the players. I think there will be 12 of us and the buy in is going to be either $250 or $500 depending what people agree on.

I am a step lower than a novice and looking for help so I do not end up dead last and have to be the "donkey" of the league. So in advance, thanks for letting me in your "Fantasy Football Nerd Club" and giving me the information needed to be the star of the draft this Sunday!

	posted by threesome4me on 08/13/2008 10:23 AM JD, the first thing you need to find out is what type of scoring you guys are planning on using because you draft differently depending on which type. I would love to help out anyway I can but definitely need to know how you are going to score.
	posted by oopie on 08/13/2008 10:27 AM Running backs, running backs, running backs!!!! Yeah, your scoring system makes a big difference in who you're picking!
	posted by Matty O'Shea on 08/13/2008 10:33 AM I agree 100% with Oopie - running back depth is by far the most important thing in fantasy football. If you can pick two solid backs in your first three picks, do it. If you can pick three solid backs in your first four picks, do it. Wide receivers outside of the very best (like Randy Moss) are a dime a dozen.
	posted by jumperjack on 08/13/2008 10:35 AM Most important is understanding the scoring system. You dont want to reach for a QB early if passing TD's are 3 points and rushing and receiving TD's are 6 points. Plenty of decent QB's available as late as round 5 or 6. I think I took my first QB in round 5 last year and ended up having the 2nd highest scoring QB's in my league. I took Brett Favre. :P

	posted by Johnny Detroit on 08/13/2008 11:41 AM My friend sent me this: its a basic scoring system...6 for td..4-6 for a pass 1 one for a receprion..bonus after a 100 and 150 yrd reception 2:21 some ppl might not want bonus..keepers...defensive scoring we have to vote on that stuff
	posted by Sweat Hog on 08/13/2008 12:43 PM Don't forget to check Bye Weeks. Not much point in having 3 awesome RBs if they all sit the same week. I also look more at guys that don't have the injury history, Deuce McAllister is an excellent Fantasy back for the 4 games he plays each year, but is a useless pick eventually.

	posted by deliveryman3 on 08/13/2008 2:12 PM been playin few years........like others said scoring system is important...if td by qb is 3 or 4 then wait for QB otherwise u mmay want to grab one early as top qb will be gone after 3rd rd...romo...manning brady etc lot of teams share the load at RB so I will disagree to some extent about going RB in 1st 2 rounds........draft position also factor.....top 5 in rd one then grab RB for sure and consider Rb that get lots of passes since u said it will be 1 pt per reception (westbrook for example )....you could go RB, WR and then either or in rd3 based on best player availbale....guys like Edge and Mcfadden Thomas Jones shud fall to rd 4 or 5 and would be nice pup after getting solid RB and WR in first 2 rounds .....go to fantasyfootballcalculator.com and u can do 'mock draft' and see what u caome up with........can also look at other mock drafts that have occurred and see how they went. there is a FFB contest in Vegas (WCOFF) entry 1500 and winner gets about 300k.........there is money in FFB ! I gamble and play FFB,, love em both also look to draft some rookies in later rounds like Chris Johnson Rb at Tenn....Stewart at Carolina but he has been going in 6 or 7.....wait til end to get PK as difference in points from top to bottom is not that great in the big picture

But I will say, she was clean," the 60-year-old Holmgren said, chuckling. "It was the appearance. "She did not phone me about it. And she was very upset about it. But she knows football, as all my girls do."
