Johnny Detroit's College Football Pick: Who is #1?

I know USC reloads and does not rebuild. I know Ohio State has almost the entire team back and will probably make a third straight trip to the BCS Title Game. But, and a big BUT, with the SEC being the best conference in college football, there is no way you can start off the season and NOT give the top spot to the best team in the best conference. The SEC has won three of the past five National Championship (this does not include Auburn being shafted when 13-0 in 2004). If the BCS is the best of the best, than the SEC winning 7 of their past 9 appearances (outscoring other conferences the past four years in the BCS 161-62) is just the cherry on top of the Southern Sundae. So if anyone is make college football picks this season, it is nearly impossible to not give the SEC their proper respect and make the Georgia Bulldogs the #1 ranked team to start the season.

Georgia finished their season with a 41-10 massacre of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl and go into this year returning the following:

Starting quarterback Matt Stafford (who only lost one receiver from last season)
Starting runningback Knowshon Moreno
Oh yeah, and nine starters on defense

The only thing that could stand in the way of Georgia going to the BCS Title to play either USC or Ohio State will be their schedule. Toss out the SEC portion, which includes road games to South Carolina, LSU and Auburn, but they also play Arizona State (should finish 2nd to USC in the PAC 10) on the road and finish the season at home against Georgia Tech before heading to the SEC Championship.

It is hard to find a flaw in Georgia this season. They have depth across the board on a team that closed 2007-08 putting up close to 40 points in four of their last six games. Honestly, I think even the waterboy crew is all seasoned veterans! The Bulldogs are Johnny Detroit's #1 team in college football this year until the scoreboard says otherwise.

JD,

Nice Read. I agree Georgia is LOADED. But IMO the FLORIDA GATORS are #1...With Everyone's All-American QB TIM TEBOW & 16 Starters Back. Bulldogs vs Gators at the game previously called "The World's Largest Cocktail Party" will likely decide the SEC East  Winner....& Front Runner to DESTROY Big Ten Champ Ohio St!

The only  bad thing about the Dawgs is their schedule. They play road tilts at South Carolina, Arizona State, LSU and Auburn, home games with Alabama and Tennessee, not too mention that little tussle in Jacksonville with Florida. If UGA wins it all, they'll have definitely have earned it.

posted by Matty O'Shea on 07/22/2008 11:27 AM

Agreed - Georgia will get a chance to prove itself as the #1 team in the country by going unbeaten.  If the Dawgs do that, there's no doubt they will deserve to get a title shot.

Easiest Path to National Title: Ohio State

Toughest Path to National Title: Georgia

What does that mean? It means if these two teams meet for all the marbles, the Buckeyes are likely to get smoked again. But a couple of Big 12 teams will have something to say about that as well.

like carson palmer said yesterday, i hope the buckeyes get crushed by USC. i hate how ohio state always plays a weak schedule when USC always goes out there looking for the best competition. USC, Georgia for the national title game. should be a great one. wish i cuold have seen that in the rose bowl last year but the committee wanted to keep with tradition of a pac-10, big-10 match up. can't wait!

posted by Tommy Rider on 07/22/2008 12:51 PM

The Rose Bowl is a joke. They are the only ones that have yet to realize that no one gives a shit about their stupid tradition. They cost all CFB fans the chance to see USC/Georgia so they could put an undeserving Illinois team in there and lose by 40. They should be shot for what they did. I can't believe there wasn't a bigger public outcry over that. Plus, UGA got to play an undermanned Hawaii team so we saw two terrible bowl games because of one bullshit decision. Embarrassing.

When the FLORIDA GATORS GO Undefeated & WIN The National Championship......

JD will have the SATISFACTION of knowing that Michigan was the  Last Team to beat them!

posted by Matty O'Shea on 07/22/2008 1:43 PM

I definitely think USC has to be mentioned here as well.  If they beat Ohio State at home on September 13th, I believe they will have the inside track to one of the BCS title spots against the SEC champ.  Missouri or Oklahoma will also have a say.

posted by Johnny Detroit on 07/22/2008 4:58 PM

Chuck, there are alot of SEC teams that are not MI fans.

Same reason a lot of Ohio State fans are not SEC fans.

The USC and Ohio State game will decide one of the spots in the BCS. Even if the winner of that game loses afterwards BUT the loser of the game wins out, how do you not put them in the main game?

posted by Tommy Rider on 07/22/2008 5:04 PM

If Georgia only loses one game, they get in for sure. That's not really my opinion, I believe it's probably a fact. With that schedule, it will be almost impossible for a one-loss Georgia team to not be ranked high in the polls. If they lose twice, then that's a different story but 12-1 or 13-0 and the Dawgs will be guaranteed a spot in the National Title Game based on how strongly the computers rank strength of schedule and the fact that they will likely never drop lower than seven all season, even with a loss.

TR,

100% agree, especially if they smoke Arizona State and than they end up finishing second in the Pac 10.

The Florida game will be the deciding factor.

Thing I do not get is this equation if someone can explain it:

Past 10 years Michigan has been Ohio States bitch but the SEC has been Michigan's bitch but Ohio State is the SEC's bitch.

posted by Tommy Rider on 07/22/2008 5:10 PM

By the way, what happens if OU goes undefeated and then loses to a one-loss Missouri team in the Big 12 Title Game? Then both of those teams would only have one loss. Say Georgia and Florida each have one loss, USC beats Ohio State and then gets upset along the way. Now we have UGA, Florida. OU, Missouri, USC and Ohio State all with one loss? Who goes and who stays? Let the madness begin. lol

posted by Johnny Detroit on 07/22/2008 5:12 PM

I think any one loss SEC team gets in automatically.

posted by Tommy Rider on 07/22/2008 5:13 PM

I can answer that question for you JD: Lloyd Carr coached like a pussy against OSU and let his talented team play against SEC teams. All you need to know about Carr is that Bill Belichick thinks he's one of the worst coaches in CFB. He thinks Carr fucks around too much with the minds of good players because of his ego. I think Michigan got held back at times because of his conservative play calling but he seemed to let them lose against SEC teams, especially in bowl games. Would you agree with that, having followed the school closely?

posted by Johnny Detroit on 07/22/2008 5:15 PM

I always questioned that. For example Orange Bowl vs Bama. Bama goes up early and I am thinking blowout. Tha Carr opens up the playbook and MI goes up and down the field. Never understood that.

I look at it this way. It is not debatable MI produces the best QBs. Almost every QB they have starts or has started in the NFL dating back to Harbaugh. That kind of QB talent and you are running up the middle and tossing 5 yard outs?

posted by Tommy Rider on 07/22/2008 5:26 PM

Agreed JD. It is my contention that Michigan gets as much talent and speed as Ohio State, if not more. That's why I think Rodriguez has a good chance to win a National Title there. He's an aggressive coach. Carr was built from the Bo mold and I'm sure you know, Bo despised the forward pass. I don't think Carr was the worst coach ever, he was just too conservative, especially early on in games. That's why they have been such great underdogs over the years because the Wolverines are their most dangerous when they have nothing to lose and Carr let them go. In two years, no one is going to want to see this team on their schedule. No one.

posted by Chuck O'Luck on 07/22/2008 6:44 PM

TR,

You hit the Nail on the Head. Carr ALWAYS played TOO Conservative (Made a TON of $$$ betting against them as Heavy Chalk)...kept lesser Talented Teams hanging around, instead of Blowing them out. IMO it COST the Wolverrines countless WINS since he was Coaching.

Last year LSU was the FIRST 2 Loss National Champion in 40yrs? That WON"T happen this Year.

I hate to even say this, but I think Ohio State FINALLY wins the National Title again on their 3rd try.

Will a 1-loss Georgia get to the National Championship if there are two other undefeated teams like Oklahoma and USC/Ohio State?

posted by Tommy Rider on 07/28/2008 6:57 AM

Good question Art. Let's hope that happens so we can can sit back and watch the BCS sweat. lol

posted by Chuck O'Luck on 07/28/2008 7:08 AM

IF Oklahoma & Ohio St/USC go Undefeated they MEET in the BCS Championship Game (They would be RANKED 1 & 2 ) OVER 1-Loss Georgia Team.

posted by Tommy Rider on 07/28/2008 7:14 AM

I'm not so sure Chuck. With Georgia's strength of schedule, I could easily see them getting in over Ohio State, especially if the Big 10 has no other teams ranked in the top 15 at the end of the season. I don't think going undefeated necessarily gets you into the title game. If Georgia lost early to say ASU and rebounded to beat Florida, LSU and Auburn and won the SEC Championship Game, I would be shocked if they weren't playing for the National Title.

posted by Chuck O'Luck on 07/28/2008 7:52 AM

TR, Maybe in that scenario. But BUCKEYE Nation would be SCREAMING!!! Ohio St would FEEL like the Auburn Tigers of 2003!

There is no way an undefeated Ohio State does not go to the BCS Title game.

posted by Matty O'Shea on 07/28/2008 1:08 PM

Agreed, especially considering that would include a win at USC.

posted by Tommy Rider on 07/28/2008 2:47 PM

The question is if there are two or three undefeated teams and Georgia has one loss early in the year. Unless you are a computer, you can't say for sure what will happen. I know one thing: If UGA looses to ASU and then beats Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU and the SEC Championship Game, you tell me they don't get in when the computers will have the SEC rated as the toughest conference? I have a hard a time believing that. In that scenario, someone would get left out but my guess is it wouldn't be the 1-loss Bulldogs. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying how I think things would turn out. I may be wrong but that's my thinking.

Trust me, I went unbeaten with Syracuse in NCAA Football 06 and won the Heisman Trophy myself as a walk-on freshman WR and STILL missed out on the BCS title game to a 2-loss Ohio State team.  There's no doubt they would get in LOL

It was 3 years ago Chucky.  After that happened, I couldn't even move on to my sophomore year.  Reality bites sometimes LOL

posted by Tommy Rider on 07/28/2008 3:06 PM

Yeah, that's true. For all the bitching that goes on here, the voters love the Big 10. I'm just thinking if a scenario happens where Florida is 5, LSU and Auburn are both in the top 12 and Georgia has one loss early in the year with a brutal schedule, how they don't get voted in by the computers? That's my only point. I think it would be a helluva pickle if OU and Ohio State both went undefeated and one got left out of the BCS. Watch how fast the presidents change their mind on a playoff system if that happens. It certainly would be interesting but other than Ohio State going undefeated, none of this likely to happen. And the Buckeyes will go unbeaten. Book it USC fans.
