What is your worst gambling beat ever (no poker stories)?

by Johnny Detroit on 04/23/2008 11:07 AM

I mean "bad beat/back door" cover as in "DOH" and not as in "$$$".

Poker stories need not apply as I hear enough of this drival at the casino and the home games I play in. I can only take so many "one outer" and "can you believe he called me" tirades.

For mine, you have to go back to 2001. It was one of those infamous "late night" Pac-10 games EVERY true junkie bets the motherload on to either have a monster day or on the flip side, to win back all the $ lost early on. This particular Saturday, my game to get even was the Washington Huskies vs. the Arizona Wildcats. Between privates sources and my EXPERT (lol) opinion, I put everything I could muster on the Huskies minus three.

The games goes back and forth from the start. With time winding down, Washington is deep in Arizona territory. After a stop on 3rd down, Washington lines up for a CHIP SHOT field goal that would put them up 7 points. The beginning of my pain happened a few seconds later when an Arizona tipped the ball and the Huskies missed the field goal. Despite this, I was still up 4 with not much time left and Arizona had to go almost the length of the field. Considering I had it at -3, I was pretty much golden as Arizona is forced to not only go the length of the field but also score a touchdown with no time left. After some miracle passes, Arizona had time for one more play. What a play it was.....

Around the 10 yard line, Ortege Jenkins drops back for the only option available; a pass into the endzone. The problem was Washington had all the receivers covered and were now converging on the Arizona QB, so Ortege takes of running. I jump off the couch screaming, get that MOTHERF*CKER!!!! My wish from the gambling gods was granted when not one, not two BUT three Washington defenders dive at him as he attempts his leap from the two yard line. What followed not only won the College Football Play of the Year, but I made me feel like I was kicked in my stomach, dumped by my girlfriend and about to puke all at once. As three Washington defenders smacked into Jenkins, he attempts to leap the defenders but is nailed dead on and the impact causes him to spin like a top and do a complete 360 flip into the air. The problem? Well, the problem was as he is flying thru the air from the two, he is spinning mid air and lands on his feet, in the endzone! Touchdown Arizona. Final score 31-28 Arizona. Time stopped that night in that dark living room with the only light being from the flashing from the TV screen. Not sure if it was an abnormal gust of wind or possibly some dust, but I do recall my eyes getting a little watery. If my count was correct that was #324 in my list of times I swore never to gamble again.

What was the one game you remember that made you want to throw the remote into the TV?

I swear to you I remember that exact game, I was on the other side though. Wow! One that comes to mind for me was back around 86 or 87, anyway I was still pretty green at betting baseball. It was august and hot as hell, we were staying at the Vegas Hilton. It was 87 because Wayne Newton was performing a special 10th anniversary concert marking Elvis's death and the Hilton was really making a big deal of it since that was where Elvis played. Anyway, being green as grass I bet a 5 game parlay that paid sweet of course. The first 4 games of course win and it comes down to the last game of the night, Dodgers vs Giants at Dodger stadium. I have the Giants, they are down 1 in the 9th inning, load up the bases with nobody out, I'm feeling pretty good about my chances here. First guy strikes out on a 3-2 pitch in the fucking dirt. Jeffrey Leonard comes up and hit's a one hopper back to the pitcher, out at home and out home to first game over. In a matter of seconds my big night was destroyed. I swear I walked through that casino after the game to my elevator and didnt hear a thing, I was like a zombie in a trance. Know that feeling? Of course the next night I was right back down there ready to take them on again.

The infamous gambling bad beat hearing loss syndrome. Like that scene in Saving Private Ryan in the beginning when they storm the beach and Tom Hanks is in the daze.

theres been so many.......most recently we'll go back to last season with the texasam-miami fla game.....9 seconds left, texasam is on wrong side of a blowout and we have the under and its golden with 4th and 29 and txam is like 75 yards from paydirt for a MEANINGLESS TOUCHDOWN.....fucking coach shouldve had them kneeling down...instead they throw the bomb and the miami kid decided it was SO FUCKING MEANINGLESS THAT HE NEVER EVEN LOOKED AT THE RECEIVER.....JUST LOOKED AWAY AND LET HIM GO.....and we lose ubder instead of a sweep......and i can remember a chicago bulls-sacto game about 5 years ago when sacto was dribbling the ball out and gonna take it in and im marking the sheet off since they're up 9 1/2 and laying 12....fucking trenton hassle goes after bibby as hes dribbling out with 2 seconds left so bibby says *** it and shoots a 3 and swish.....now i lose by a 1/2 point because trenton hassel decidees to  play fucking idiot instead of let the game end...bibby was NEVER GONNA SHOOT THE BALL......WE HAD THAT GAME WRAPPED UP IN A FEW PARLAYS AND THE LIKEWISE....and i never mark them off until the're final and the clock says 0;00

That's EASY. The "RIVER CITY RELAY"!!!! DECEMBER 21st 2003. MARCO had one of his 15* GOY's on the Saints vs Jags game to go OVER 40. I had a GREAT winning day ( the day before) in College Football & was up about 2 Dimes.1st half  BOTH teams miss 30yd  Field Goals! Halftime Score 10-7. Should have been 13-10. Still looking OK. 3rd Quarter Jags score a TD & Saints kick a FG 17-10. Still LOOKS OK. Need 14 pts (2 Tds & extra points) 4th Quarter BOTH Teams kick  Field Goals 20-13. I'm thinkin this one's NOT going to WIN! Jags punt with 30 seconds left in the Game. Saints 1st & 10 on their own 25. 2 Incompletes.... 7 SECONDS LEFT. The Saints throw a Slant to Dante Stallworth, who runs about 25yds & laterals the Ball to Michael Lewis, who runs about 20yds & laterals to Deuce McAllister, who runs about 15yds & laterals to Jerome Pathon who SCORES a TOUCHDOWN with NO TIME LEFT on the Clock!!!!!!! Score 20-19 I COME UNGLUED!!!!!!  All I NEED is th EXTRA Point to PUSH my BET & SEND the Game into OVERTIME! at 20-20! Surely I'll WIN the OVER 40 in the OVERTIME? But NOOOOOOOO!!! John Carney SHANKED the Extra Point & the Saints & I (And Marco) Lose 20-19!!!! This play WON the ESPY in 2004.

Horse Racing

1996 Kentucky Derby

$100 to win on 8/1 Cavonnier with Jockey Chris McCarron

Lost at the line by a nose to Grindstone under Jockey Jerry Bailey in the final jump.

One of the closest Derby Finishes ever - and I was on the wrong end of what whould of been about a $900 payout on just one horse.

thought of one more.....the missed/made field goal in the clev-balt game where we had balt +3 and a 10,000 parlay is riding on this beside the side plays and my boy is jumping around and yelling on the phone we hit the parlay and all i can see is wait and see cuz ive NEVER seen this in a football game and now i see the refs going to the sidelines and lookingt up protocol and calling the fucking commissioner to get a clearence on the rules and next thing you know the refs are heading toward the locker room and getting guys to put their pads BACK ON.....and we push in the end and lose the parlay because we played a local card and ties lose if your playing the card and not booking it straight.....put 500 on a 20-1 payout 5 teamer

JD,

I had Arizona and the over in that one. The Jenkins TD got me both ends. I believe the Washington kicker missed three easy field goal attempts that night, by the way.

I posted this a few weeks ago but my worst beat ever was New England 25 Bills 21. I had the Bills +3.5 and they walked off the field after the final touchdown, allowing the Pats to walk in for a 2-point conversion and cover the spread. I still get tears in my eyes just thinking about it.

TR,

I also remember that. A friend of mine told his local he should not have to pay because of that.

mine had to be the browns/raven sunday night game 4 years ago.  i had clev and the under straight and in a reverse.  clev was driving and ed mother f'er reed picked the ball off in the end zone and decided he wanted to run it back for a td with :00 left on the clock.  fuking showoff!!!!  another one had to be this past football season.  i  believe it was cinn playing the pats(maybe not cinncy)  but the spread was 8 new eng was up 7 and had it 4th and goal on the 1 and cinncy stopped them with under a minute left.  i thought i was golden.  next play new eng picked the ball off and ran it in for a td.  how fast things change!!!!!!!

Not one of my worst, but the Cavs 2nd half last night. MIssing like 20 FTs and Lebron doing his usual collapse late.

spurs ML. fisher .4  i was jumpin up and down when Duncan hit that 20 ft fadeaway to give the spurs the lead. Why do i remember that bet? because i took the spurs even though i grew up in LA. Watched the game with a bunch of buddies who bet LA. Still a fun night since everyone got wasted, but it would have been nice to hit a 4 teamer with that.

anything I play is a bad beat....anyways one of mine was a few years back.I had the jest I think it was minus2.5  and up 4 and neil odonell has the ball deep in his own end.Clock running down and all he had to do was down the ball once more.Im on the phone with my friend and he says to me looks like a winner to me and I say yep then o'donell takes the last snap and in celebration for the win he throws the ball thru his own endzone thru the uprights .My friend says"I think thats a saftey I said no way wel of course it was a saftey.I wanted to punch that asshole so hard.

My horse story is sad but true.I do not bet horses much but the derby I will sometimes. My buddy bets the ponies alot . He calls me and says hey did you bet this and I said no,he says Ive got Barbaro with a few different horses you have to watch the race Im going to hit this one.So the race comes on and he calls me and Barbaro breaks out of the gate before the race.I said " thats your horse?A bit premature wouldnt you say?"Then I said and i swear to god...."now that he did that watch him break his leg"......sorry to all the horse fans but thats exactally what happened

i remember i race i bet on simulcast at the old DRC where my horse was an easy winner and slipped on the muddy track down the stretch. i go motherf***er as i turn to the tv they had on with the SUN night game on and see the Bills throw an INT that is returned for a TD late in the game (i had the bills). so there i am standing in the middle of two tvs AT the racetrack and get double whammied. I think that was #459 of saying "i am done gambling"....

theres NO WAY whipper can beat this horse story and i woulda NEVER believed it had i not seen it with my own eyes....we go to see the nags run at northville downs or raceway and this is harness racing....the horse was named duel or something and one of our dudes had a friend who worked at the stables and to make a long story short danny put his weekly paycheck on this horse and we toss a few hundred in with it and duel is leading from start to finish until the far turn, where this horse ABRUPTLY DOES A 360 AND STARTS RUNNING CLOCKWISE ON THE TRACK, DUMPING THE RIDER AND DRAGGING THE SULKY WITH HIM......AND CONTINUED RUNNING THE OPPOSITE WAY UNTIL HE GOT TO THE START/FINISH LINE.....it was hysterical and i have yet to see anything remotely close to that on a racetrack since and this happened 15 years ago and i still laugh out loud thinking about it.....

BB,

Funny story. Friend of mine's old man had a pony that used to run at DRC before they tore it down. One day in the back he goes up to a jockey he knows and asked if he was going to win the next race. No shit, jockey turns and goes, "sorry, can't do no better than 4th in this one...."

Classic DRC.
