The Rare 45-Point Cover: NBA RoundUp for 2/9

by Dan Bebe on 02/09/2010 1:12 AM
Last night was like an advertisement for an antiperspirant!

It's not every night you get a 45-point cover, but when it happens, it is really something sweet. I've been feeling good since the end of the 1st quarter of that Magic-Hornets game when I already knew the tempo was going to send the game Over. I didn't know both teams would shoot 55% and it would go Over with 9 minutes left, but it sure was sweet when it did. And how about Vinsanity!? Did someone turn the volume up on his alarm clock? Monster game from Carter, and now we have to wait to see if it was a flash in the pan, or a sign of a strong stretch run.

That Paid Play winner moves us to 11-5 on our last 16 Premium Plays, and 23-13 on our last 36, two streaks that I am very proud of, not just because they're both strong winning trends, but because folks can see that winning comes in both the short and long term, and that NBA is very much a beatable sport!

Today, we have 11 NBA games to work with, and I must say, I'm seeing a few games that really look juicy. Let's get to it.

Sports Wagering

Nets @ Cleveland - This line is OFF. But it is going to make some noise when it comes out. Look out below! I would say that considering the Cavs have won 11 straight games and covered 7 of those 11, and the Nets are the worst team in the NBA (though they're 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 while going 1-6 SU), this line is going to be huge. And to be perfectly frank, I believe the value is squarely on the Nets, despite the Cavs recent ability, seemingly, to blow out everyone by the 6 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. The thing I like the most is that Cleveland has a game with the Magic after this contest with Jersey. If ever there were a time when the King might take the foot off the accelerator after a strong 1st quarter, this is that game. They know they don't have to give 100% to beat the Nets, especially in Cleveland, and I think Jersey is going to be getting so many points (especially without Devin Harris, likely hurt again), that the back door is going to be WIDE open on this game. The Nets are on some sort of double-revenge, though, as I've noted before, when you have a team that doesn't expect to ever beat the other, there's no such thing as "revenge." I do think, as our buddy Sac pointed out, that the lesser time is prone to retool their attack method, and the Nets have actually competed at a decent clip against the Cavs, losing games by 10 and 8, respectively, and covering in both. I lean Jersey on the side. On the total, both games so far this year have gone Under, with both teams shooting under 40% in the last game. I think this one ends right around 188-90, so let's see what line we get to work with.

Wizards @ Bobcats - This line is OFF. This is a bad spot for the Wizards. Allow me to explain. First, the Bobcats are in their second game home off a long road trip. They had the letdown game, and lost to the surging Hornets with a very slow, sluggish second half. They should be ready to bounce back in this one, so there's point number one for Charlotte. The second key note is that the Wizards are coming off a colossal upset win over the Magic. This is a bit of a letdown spot, playing a lesser team after the chunky emotional high the Wizards likely experienced after picking up the nice "W" in Florida. This year, off an upset win, the Magic are just 1-9 ATS the following game. Third key note, this is the Wizards' final game before the All Star break. They do not play on Wednesday or Thursday, so the guys have a full week off after this one. If that's not bad enough for the guys looking ahead to spending a week with family, how about the fact they have to play this final game before the break on the road. This, to me, is a lot like how marvelous playing home teams before the baseball All Star break works. Yes, the Bobcats play two more times before the break, so they're not going to be in look-ahead mode, and yes, that's another reason I like Charlotte. The one reason to back off of the Bobcats here is revenge. Charlotte murdered the Wizards back in late November, 92-76, a game that went way under the posted total. I fear the Wizards may be in a bad spot here, and despite the revenge factor, I just don't know if they can get it done. I lean Charlotte, and I lean Under, since a Charlotte tempo is a slow tempo.

Wolves @ Sixers - Philly by 6.5 with a total of 204.5. These two teams are both red-hot right now, leading into the Break. Both teams have won 4 straight games SU, and while Philly has covered 3 straight, Minny has covered 4 in a row. Interestingly, too, of the 8 combined straight up wins for these two clubs, 6 of those 8 games have gone over the posted total. So they're winning, and they're winning with offense. My take on the side is as such: the Sixers have won 3 of those 4 games on the road, where they continue to be one of the League's finest road ATS plays. Philly is 16-10 ATS on the road, but just 6-18 ATS at home. I just can't bring myself to trust Philly to cover 6.5 points at home against anyone, not even the Timberwolves. Especially not right now, while Minny is truly playing with outrageous confidence! I watched every second of the Wolves games against the Mavs and Grizzlies (we cashed both), and not only was Minnesota hitting their shots, aside from about 2-3 stretches in both games where they just stagnated offensively, they were running the TRIANGLE offense, and making it work. I have to admit, I was floored at how smooth they looked. I realize that winning solves a lot of problems, and confidence can do a ton for a team that doesn't play any defense, but the combination of Al Jefferson and Kevin Love inside, with the resurgent Ramon Sessions slashing into the lane and Ryan Gomes and Corey Brewer hitting 3's, this team is winning. The only angle that is a little concerning is the revenge - Minnesota beat Philly up in the Twin Cities 3 weeks ago. Still, I think that was a sign of the match-up problems the Wolves pose for Philly - I lean Minnesota on the side, and I just have to like the Over until one of these teams decides to play some defense. The tempo of both teams lately is so fast that it will take a 40% shooting night from both teams to keep the game under.

Bulls @ Pacers - Indiana by 1.5 with a total of 202. I like Indiana right now. That doesn't mean I want to bet them every game, but I like them because they're somewhat predictable - the handicappers greatest ally, especially for a low-tier team. We know the public is going to look at the Bulls first, because, well, Chicago bettors love their team, and the Bulls have name recognition: Derrick Rose, in particular. So, Chicago comes to town off a win over the tumbling Miami Heat. Did that tell us anything, though? Chicago is banged up, and equilibrating somewhat after that exceptional road trip through half of the Western Conference. They won 5 straight on that trip, lost 3 after it ended, then just won 1, but really, I wasn't too impressed with the win over the Heat, and I think Miami gets a bigger test here in Indiana than most people expect. The Pacers have suddenly become a very home-friendly club, winning each of their last 2 home games in blowout fashion, but got crushed on the road on either side of those 2 games. They're not playing any close ones, that's one thing we can say for certain. And unless Chicago holds a team meeting where Del Negro calls his boys out (and I don't see that happening the week before the All Star break), I think the Pacers should win this one going away. It's also a revenge spot for Indiana, for what it's worth; and Chicago hosts Orlando tomorrow, so a potential look-ahead spot for the Bulls. On the total, I think it's interesting that the first meeting had a posted mark of 193, went over (199), and this one opened 3 points higher. That, to me, is a relatively beefy indicator that oddsmakers think the Pacers will control the tempo - I lean Over, even though Chicago has been playing some clunkers lately. Stronger lean on the side, though.

Rockets @ Heat - This line is OFF. Other than the revenge angle, this game, to me, is a handicapper's nightmare. These are two of the most inconsistent teams in the entire NBA, and now they get to play each other! Miami did beat up on Houston down in Texas back on January 15th (115-106), so the Rockets will likely want to get a little revenge here, and I believe they couldn't find the Heat at a better time. Miami has suffered through a season-high 5-game losing streak, and they're just 1-4 ATS during that stretch, covering as an underdog in Boston. Otherwise, and really, even in that game, it has been VERY ugly. Miami has not been scoring, posting totals in the 80's in 3 of those 5 games, and 91 points in the 4th. In fact, they broke 100 against Boston, who, for whatever reason chose not to play defense for one day, but if you eliminate that game in Beantown, Miami is averaging just 85.5 points in the other 4 games. They haven't been rebounding or defending either, allowing AT LEAST 95 points in every game in this streak, including 102 to Cleveland and 107 to Boston. I just cannot stress enough how terribly ugly it has been. Have they bottomed out? I'm not sure, but I don't think there has been an obvious "rock bottom", at least not yet. Miami plays in Atlanta tomorrow, so even if this game is close, that could be the embarrassment they need to wake up, just in time for an All Star break. Houston, interestingly, looked like they were snapping out of a funk of their own with a home blowout over the Warriors and a road blowout over the Grizz, but then came back home and got stomped by the Sixers. I want to chalk that loss up to playing on zero rest (Rockets are 4-9 ATS on back-to-backs), and say that with 2 days of rest going into this one, they should be able to hang tough. I lean to Houston in this battle of tiring middling clubs. I also lean to the Under, as I can't play a Miami-over until they show they can break 90 consistently.

Kings @ Knicks - New York by 5 with a total of 212. Can the Kings be trusted right now? I don't believe so. Sure, they may be a team with some "value", but if they're just not playing well, then it almost doesn't matter how many points they're getting on a "fair line", since they're getting blasted by at least 3-5 over the spread every single night, it seems. Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, seeing as how they did cover 2 in a row in Denver and at home to the Spurs, but they've gone back to losing big since those ATS wins. This is a team that, right now, is losing almost every single game straight up. So, if you're looking at taking Sactown, you have to be considering the idea that they can lose by less than the spread. And in a game where the line is just 5, it's hard for me to play a team that I just don't feel can win the game outright. The Kings, and prepare yourself for a mind-bending stat, are 2-18 in their last 20 games. That is Nets territory. And the most crushing part is that they were actually beating the Raptors soundly entering the 4th quarter on Sunday before cracking off another of their nearly-patented 4th quarter meltdowns, and losing by 11. Can they bounce back? Maybe. But I'm not going to be the lunatic that tries to play a carnival game with the Kings, and pick the one game out of every 10 that they win outright. This one is Knicks or nothing. So, is it Knicks or nothing, you're asking? The Knicks haven't been terribly impressive either, though, after falling behind by 20 early to the Cavs, they rallied to cover that one. This is their final game before the All Star break, and I just wonder if they're going to mail this one in. I'm leaning towards a Pass on the side, and with neither team really focused, I think the Over might have some legs.

Hawks @ Grizzlies - This line is OFF. This strikes me as the game where the Grizzlies wake back up. I'm not sure if it's the level of competition that is somewhat more inspiring, but I just have a gut feeling Memphis breaks out of their mini-slump to put together a strong game here. It might have a little something to do with the Hawks recent and long-term history, too. Atlanta beat Memphis by 13 back on December 16th, in Atlanta, while wildly outplaying the Grizz. Memphis had 20 turnovers in that game, and when all was said and done took 17 fewer shots than Atlanta! You're rarely going to win like that, unless you're taking 30 more free throws than your opponent, which Memphis most certainly did not. I don't think Atlanta is going to pick on Memphis again. The Grizz have come so far, and they're sitting right on the cusp of a playoff berth, and they definitely realize how important every game is, especially against the teams that they want to stack up against, the barometer effect, so to speak. Atlanta has also been pretty terrible on the road lately, and very, very strong at home. It's a nice blend for bettors, since the public is going to see Atlanta winning (and covering) at home, then forget that Atlanta has lost their last 3 on the road - those games were against tough teams (Spurs, Magic, Thunder), but they got beat pretty soundly in all 3. It's a bit of a dangerous call, since this is Memphis's final game before the All Star break, but they strike me as the type of young team that wants to go into the layoff with positive momentum, and Atlanta has a home date with the rival Heat tomorrow, too. I lean Memphis on the side, and I believe this total will be slightly inflated because of the slight misconception that these teams never play defense. That's not to say I lean Under, but I do think there may be 1-2 points of value beneath the line.

Pistons @ Bucks - Milwaukee by 8 with a total of 189.5. Yikes, how things have changed this year. Who would have thought, really, in 2005, that 5 years later the mighty Pistons would be getting 8 points in Milwaukee? A devastating time for the city of Detroit, and its fans, with the Lions still awful, the Tigers melting down, and so forth. At least they've got their Wings. Anyway, back to the game at hand -- I think the reason this line strikes us as so high is because it probably is a tad high. The Bucks are starting to get some credit, as well they should. Milwaukee is a ridiculous 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that they're suddenly laying big points at home, where they're exceptionally tough. The Bucks are coming off a 12-point win over the Pacers as a 7-point home favorite, so they're not at all opposed to winning by double digits, but with both teams having won the previous home meeting, and the Pistons, supposedly, getting better every game, this is not a good time to fade Detroit. The Pistons are just finally getting all their injured pieces back, and as they start to come together as a team, chemistry-wise, they should be able to rattle off a few covers in a row. It's just a bit of a mystery when it's going to happen. So, in this game, do you back the white-hot Milwaukee team and go with the "ride the wave" approach, or back the Pistons, assuming they're a team on the upswing and getting 1-2 points of value? Or neither. I'm leaning towards a pass right now, though strong line movement might sway me. This total looks awfully low, too, since I think Milwaukee is going to try to play a little faster in this one and get Detroit out of their comfort zone. I lean Over, but barely.

Mavericks @ Nuggets - This line is OFF. This is a Denver play or nothing at all. I love that the Nuggets are coming home off a loss in Utah, since it should create just enough value to make this game playable. I also love that the Mavs are coming into the altitude on a back-to-back, a situation where they WON earlier this year, but this time are coming from the West coast, a notoriously difficult time zone issue that puts them in their Denver hotel near 4am local time, and gives them less than half a day to get a night of rest, try to gameplan for the Nuggets, warm up, deal with the thin air, and then try to sustain a high level of basketball for 48 minutes. Dallas really had to play HARD in Golden State, trailing most of the night before ratcheting up their game in the 4th and take advantage of the vastly overmatched Warriors, who definitely appear to be tiring heading into the All Star break. I must say, though, I like that the Mavs had to play their starters the entire game, and work to come back and hold off Golden State. It didn't help that Monta Ellis squashed his knee on a layup try and couldn't return, but it seems like the Mavs would have won this one either way. Not sure about a cover, but hey, injuries happen, and they happen even more when you're a Warrior. The Nuggets are devastatingly good at home, as they make a push to supplant the Lakers for the best record in the West. Dallas is certainly a better ATS bet on the road than at home, but even against the Warriors their defense left something to be desired, only finally pulling ahead when they were simply able to outgun Golden State with a deeper bench and healthier players. The Nuggets are 22-4 at home SU, and while they should be pretty sizable favorites here (whether or not Billups and Melo play), and I lean to Denver. I also don't see the Nuggets shooting 38% again against the Mavs, and I like the Over.

Thunder @ Blazers - Thunder by 1 with a total of 191. Thunder on revenge? You have to give them a look. I do wish the Blazers were coming off a win against the Lakers, since that would likely have made this line a Pick, but it is what it is, and we'll work with it. Quietly, or maybe not-so-quietly depending on where you live, the Thunder have run out to a beastly 31-19 ATS mark on the season, 18-7 ATS on the road! This team is generally not intimidated by other teams' courts, and that is just huge if they want to become a team to be reckoned with year in and year out. And with Brandon Roy out through the All Star break, we know exactly who we're going to be dealing with in this one. Unfortunately, there isn't much value in the line for the Thunder, coming off 5 straight wins (4-1 ATS), but as we noted above in previous write-ups, sometimes you have to stare the value right in the face and give it the finger. If the Blazers aren't going to show up (they play in Phoenix tomorrow), then the Thunder can destroy them. I'm inclined to believe this game comes down to the wire, because even the games the Thunder lose tend to be within one possession. In fact, going through the games, of the 7 games the Thunder have lost in 2010 (they're 11-7 straight up this year), 3 of those 7 games have been 1-point losses, and 1 game was decided by a bucket. My concern here is that the Thunder will be taking a look ahead to the All Star break, and playing their final game before said Break on the road is not often a good situational spot. I like the revenge, and I like how hard this team plays, but if the team's collective head isn't in the game, this might not go so well. It's a toss-up, and while I do lean Thunder, this one has a strong chance of being a Pass. On the total, I like the Over -- we know the Thunder can score, and the Blazers are a faster team without Roy around. Plus, if the Thunder aren't completely focused, they will suffer in transition defense, and I think we'll see at least a handful of easy buckets.

Jazz @ Clippers - Jazz by 4.5 with a total of 200.5. Like taking candy from a baby, right? Not so fast. The Jazz have absolutely KILLED the Clippers over the last few years, going 7-1 ATS against LAC in the last 8 meetings, spread out over 3 years of basketball. They beat LAC by 13 earlier this season (as in, the 3rd day of the season) in a high-scoring tilt in Utah. They have won 8 straight games, going 6-1-1 ATS in that stretch (or 7-1 if you got this recent Nuggets game at the early line of -8 like we did), and haven't won any of those games in the win streak by fewer than 7 points! Why, guys, is this line only 4.5? Boozer and Williams are both playing for the Jazz, so they're at full strength. The Clippers are healthy, too, but coming off a hideous loss to the Spurs back on Saturday, getting blown out on their home floor by 17. That was the rather standard "first game home" letdown for the Clips, and this is the second game back, where most teams play a much better game. I expect a strong effort from the Clippers, who, as many have forgotten, were actually killing it at home before they had to voyage East on an 8-game road trip. Prior to this trademark letdown loss to the Spurs, the Clippers had actually covered 8 straight home games. And on top of that, the Jazz HOST the Lakers tomorrow in a big game in Utah. Utah is in a look-ahead spot, the Clippers are on revenge and in a bounceback spot in their second game back home, and after the home game with the Lakers, the Jazz head to the All Star break. This is one of those overnight road trips where some guys might just mail it in. I think Utah is a sucker play in this one, and I lean to the Clippers. In terms of the total, Utah has broken 100 in 10 straight games, but I think their focus might be lax on defense, and I just have to look at the Over, since I think the Clippers play them strong and make some shots.

Boom 3-0.....how ironic...small unattractive card and we get a sweep...who would have guessed that?

Denver's last game was a loss in Utah, but that was without Chauncey and Melo, and they can't win without both of those guys on the road.

At home, it's another story, and while Dallas did win on the back-to-back in Denver once before, I just don't see them pulling it off twice.  Plus, this time, they're playing a game in Oakland that didn't end until well after 10pm pacific.  These cats aren't going to get much sleep...

i remember that last time Dallas went into Denver the game was seldom close and Dallas won by about 10. dallas was playing really well then though as opposed to now. was denver's last game that atrocity against the Suns? if so, I'd have to lean to Denver also but, I still don't much like fading Dallas on the road.

guess I am a sucker for liking Utah!  Good Luck Dan!

good point, Dan. i like minny, the clip-show, and possibly charlotte, depending on that line.

Hahaha, nah, you're no sucker, I just dropped some hyperbole in there to keep the intensity high!

You've been doing an AWESOME job in the forum - keep up the fine work and GOOD LUCK on every play you make!  Except, of course, the ones going against me :)

Love Minny, love Clips, love Charlotte, among others - big card, I saw a lot I liked...might be another 3-play day for me....

hahaha...well one of our sucker bets on that game will cash tomorrow.  Either Vegas is begging for Clips money or begging for Jazz money

Hahaha, I might not play it anyway!

I want to see where the line goes overnight.  Down to 4, probably a play on the Clips, up to 5 or 5.5, probably avoid.    There'll be a bit more to it than that, such as bet% numbers, but I can already tell Utah is going to get a HUGE percentage of the public bets.  Doesn't mean it's wrong, just means I need to see if books are respecting public money by moving the line, or holding it knowing the sharps are trying to wait for a juicier Clips line...

glad to see my nuggets are one of your plays.  took them +1200 to win it all.  Think they have as good a shot as anyone, and I also think they will be one of the toughest teams to beat in a 7 game series.

I have watched a lot of Jazz games lately and they are playing extremely well. If anything, I like the over, but I can't see myself betting against Utah right now. They're just too hot and they really want to go into the break on a 10 game winning streak. That's another angle you have to look at in this game. . . with the break looming, a letdown is less likely.

really liking the Knicks over the more I do research on it.

LAC is a gutsy play.  Too gutsy for my blood.

The situational angles favor LAC, but there are other angles you have to consider.  Namely Utah's win streak, which they really want to sustain heading into the break - seriously, read a Utah paper, that's all the players are talking about.  Sloan won't let these guys look ahead.  That said, Utah is definitely the square of all squares side.

I just can't back this Clippers team.....they are no bueno

OKC gets a big fat *pass* from me on this one. One of the big variables is Westbrook and I'm just not feeling it on this one for some reason. Better games and better values tonight. Really like the lean on Denver with the combination of Nuggets getting rest, Nuggets in a bounceback, Nuggets revenge and Dallas tired legs heading into the altitude. Carmelo may be back for this one as well. I'm sure all of that will be reflected in the line though so I'll reserve judgement until then. Looking forward to your next 45 point cover!

Luck -

Indeed, I think the Nugs are a very tough competitior!  They need to get healthy, but bottom line is that they win at home, and spreads aside, that is huge come playoff time.  They NEED TO LEARN HOW TO WIN ON THE ROAD, though.  That is still what's separating the Nuggets from a Championship!

I agree, Clippers stink, but these are those weird games where you can often get a jump on the rest of the nation...total look-ahead spot for Utah...I think it's Clips or nothing for me.  Just my thoughts on that one!

Hahaha, Jinx, I like that analysis.  You are right, Utah is the public side, no question.

And for me, I really think there's something to this line.  I can't bring myself to believe that oddsmakers felt they HAD to open this line this low.

We have to remember that even "trap" lines are set because books want to split the money, and this line LOOKS low because books thought wiseguys would have hammered the Clippers at any higher numbers.

Doesn't mean LAC is going to win, or even cover, but just something to think about.

Mark, I agree, very difficult spot for thunder -- too many competing angles in this one with the All Star break looming, and Portland off a huge loss.

Honestly, if the Blazers had BEATEN the Lakers, this migh be a game I'd like to take the Thunder, but Portland's not really on a letdown now, so this one feels like a PASS

Hey Matt!

Thanks for the props!

We're SUPPOSED to get a TON of snow up here between now and tomorrow night...let me take a look out the window and see what's up...

Okay, looked out the window, things are pretty damn snowy.  Still, the city KNEW this snow was coming, so my guess is that they pre-salted the highways last night, and I think Western should be able to get where they need to get on a reasonable schedule.  Not as fast as if the roads were dry, but while the city streets are going to be a mess, the freeways are usually cleared pretty quickly

I DO think the bucks win the game, but I think the spreads for Milwaukee are starting to get a little inflated, and I'd rather back the Bucks against the GOOD teams, where they're getting the line value.

I had both the Mavs as a side last night + the over 218 so I cashed both those tickets, but here is the deal. It took EVERYTHING for them to pull out that game. They were losing from jump street down 2-0 and did not take their first lead until 42 minutes into the game. I thought that ticket was dead for sure. They should be DEAD tonight. I will most likely be backing Denver as long as the line is not TOO absurd. I also LOVE the Clippers in their spot and agree on the Pacers as a really good looking game as well. Last night was a 4-0 NBA sweep as I had the Hornets + the OVER just like you did so I am glad to see us on the same page there as well. Take care Dan.

Let's keep rolling today!!

45 point cover? That's not rare! Haha. The Magic made quite the comeback. They were throwing up so many 3's.

My favorite part of the game was when one of the announcers said "Up next on TNT, Lakers and Spurs. Unfortunately Kobe WON'T be playing" Then Charles Barkley said "THAT'S JUST STUPID. DON'T TELL THEM THAT! OF COURSE KOBE'S PLAYIN!" I was dying.

I like Charlotte tonight very much because I agree with you 100%, but 8.5 line is a bit too much. was hoping for a line -6.5 or -7.0 and now I dont have cojones to place a bet on them just yet. At some books odds on wash already dropping so its not a stupid thing to do to wait and get a better line. what do you think? best regards from Slovenia, Europe! btw. Zobel -

That's about what I expected, around 16.  A few of the Cavs recent lines (against NY, Memphis) were inflated by 2 points because the road team was on a back-to-back, so this one was going to be about 2 points lower than what most people expected.

Huge back door possibility here, and I lean to Jersey.

Slovenia!  That's outstanding!  This blog has truly gone international!  I think someone in here was hailing from Lithuania recently, as well, so you've got a "neighbor" of some sorts floating around this blog, though I forget who it was.

I agree, that Charlotte line is a little hefty for me, too.  If it was a little lower, and workng its way UP, I would be much more confident than the line coming out this high and working its way DOWN.  Probably a PASS for me.

And, the blog is MY PLEASURE, buddy!  I love NBA season, so typing about it and helping everyone make some cash is truly FUN for me!

Yo dan, just checkin in for the day! I've got thunder by 1, I just feel they are playing such good basketball it's hard to go against that streak when it's almost a pick 'em line.

I'm also throwing a 4 point teaser on the bucks (-4) and jazz (-1). You ever do teasers? I rarely do but sometimes it's a good way to turn 2 attractive lines into great ones (for the price of course).

Sween -

I only tease NFL and CFB, since I like being able to get across key numbers, but I'm curious to see how your teasing goes!!

My hesitation for the Thunder is still that this game is the final contest before their All Star break begins, and it's just tough for me to back a road team heading into a week-long layoff...

A QUESTIONS FOR ANYONE OUT THERE.  I did  MONSTER TEASER on super bowl sunday, with 5 teams and a 10 point tease.   I won 4 and pushed one, but they said it was a loss, that Monster teasers lose when  one of the teams push.  Do you guys have that same issue with your books?  I am with 5 dimes, just curious all

posted by guevones on 02/09/2010 10:51 AM

Sweet - yes, pushes count as losses on monster or sweetheart teasers or whatever they are called. it's pretty ridiculous if you ask me. if you're gonna make it a 12.5 point teaser (effectively that with a line on an integer) instead of a 13 point teaser then justy make it that. it's BS. The first and last one I ever played I had a push/loss and I aruged my way out of it being a loss and never played another one after that.

Ben --- I went nuts. The bar I was in went nuts. I hugged 20-30 complete strangers. I was soaked with beer and then later champagne. I couldn't breathe I screamed so much. I went running looking for my wife (probably even a bigger Saints fan than I am) who had just gone to the restroom and I was accosted (in a friendly way) by a mob of people in the bar who high-fived/hugged/picked me up/i picked others up/etc. My wife stayed on the phone with someone watching the game while she was in the bathroom and then that person just started yelling into the phone Run!Run!Run! Interception! Run! She didn't realize the Int was run back for a TD until she saw us kicking off and said "wait, why are we kicking it off?" I said, we ran the Int back for a TD! then the insanity for her started all over again. she didn't stop crying for the next 15  minutes. it was absolute insanity.

I will post about the aftermath where in a bit. Back to work for now.

I'm just hoping we have a celebration that sounds remotely like yours on the 11th July... I am praying that England win the World Cup.

One last question what was your reaction when Payton opted to open the 2nd half with the onside kick? I was left speechless and kept repeating to myself there is a fine line between insanity and genius but I'd be damned to decide which one you are Payton lol.

Mate,

In regards to the units you guys put on what does that mean, I see it all the time and wonder about that?

In the last few days I made up a checklist if you will on some of the things that I should be looking at to make my decisions on games, I read your thoughts about games from the Roundup and see what sort of factors you look at.

I think I have a list of about 15-16 items to now check before putting a bet, is that something that you use as well, a checklist to go through?

Also if a potential play ticks quite a few of those boxes and misses on one or two, would you then make a decision based on that? Whether you say, "Yeah I'll lay that one, there's plenty of evidence" or "I'll leave it, as I need overwhelming evidence?"

Cheers mate

Junior,

Great great great questions!  I would say that most times I probably don't get to 15-16 different sets of criteria, though there are certain games where you have to dig ultra deep.

But yes, the short answer to your question is that I do look for some "key" advantages for games, and try to go from there.

So, for me, I find games that look attractive based on certain sets of data (e.g. revenge, fatigue, line value, etc.), then work throughout the day, checking those plays against the less obvious criteria (player matchups, bet%, local media) to ELIMINATE plays from my card.

If a play doesn't fit EVERY filter, that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to get eliminated, and truth be told there are nights where I find a game I like and I just KNOW it's a good one.

Handicapping is a science, but it's also got some guts to it.  So there is no "perfect" way to do it - just find a way that works for you and run with it!

In regard to line value, I can remember reading that your or one of the other cappers use the statfox website for getting an idea on what lines should be. Was it you and do you take that info into deciding what your expected lines might be?

Your right about the gut instincts though, I didn't have as much time yesterday to confidently make plays but I had decided that Dallas, LAL and Villanova were good plays but didn't put the hard earned onto them. But easy to say when they win though!

I'm out, have a great one mate and hope your plays come through!

Outside of the bar where we were after the game on Magazine Street was even crazier. Magazine Street is one of the old well known areas of New Orleans, now more full of ecclectic musicians, artists, and other folks that are typcial New Orleanians, old, young, black, and white. When the game went final, Magazine went from being completely empty to a freakin den of madmen. A few cars came down the street, probably heading to the quarter, and all were honking their horns and screaming from the windows. Cops came by with their lights and sirens on. They were waving jerseys and flags out their windows. my wife ran up to one of them and gave an officer a high five. then cops just kept coming by our block. i asked someone why and they said, dude, those are the same 4 cop cars. they're just doing the block over and over again. at some point, a bus comes by that got a bunch of folks in it, presumably heading towards the quarter. but folks won't let the bus by. they start pounding on i and chanting and the folks inside do the same thing. some idiot managed to crawl up on top of the bus and start dancing and doing some sort of drunken karate moves.

in the meanwhile, we're just guzzling beer and partying in the streets at that point. new orleans  has practically no "open container" laws so we're just going in and out of the bar with 6-packs of $1.50 High Lifes, returning every 15 minutes or so.

I tried to make a few phone calls to family and friends and send a few texts, but for the most part, you couldn't even makes calls because the systems were down.

we later made it to the quarter, parking about a mile a way just so that we could walk there. it was rocking as expected and continued on that way until who knows when. we made it until about 3:00 a.m. and then when we couldn't go any more we got us $30 worth of nachos and corn pups and headed back. We had gotten going at about noon on Sunday so no telling what we all had consumed by then.

It was simply utter madness, and I've been down there for about 15 Mardi Gras weekends, MNF games, and playoff games, and this topped them all. Truly a priceless experience.

And briefly back to my wife and her tears of joy, which i think were experienced by many. she is a life long saints fan. she named her - now our - dog, after a Saints draft pick several years back. she was in new orleans and her family on the Miss. gulf Coast. they lost everything. she lost her car, family home, pets, and her nice job in new orleans after the storm. her place of employment simply dissolved. i think a lot of that comes out from her when the saints do well. of all of the people i love this for for, she is the one i love it for the most.

thanks for all your support, folks, especially y'all from from overseas. we knew how much others wanted this for us as well, and it felt great having that support.

who dat

Sweet - that is correct.

Just by a hair, though.  I just felt like I expected a HIGHER line on that Nuggets game, and I want to make sure we don't get "tricked" into thinking we're getting a better deal than we are.  When a game comes out much lower than I expect, I try to figure out why, and I think it's because of all the injuries -- so that's why this is a play -- if the low line was NOT because of injury, we might get a raw deal based on something that I just didn't see.  So that's why we're going small on that one!

Let's do it Hotspur!!!

i'd appreciate that hotspur. honestly, the only similar experience i had where a whole city/country was on the same side was when i was living down in Costa Rica when they made - I think - their first world cup appearance in a number of years. having literally every single person in the city/country on the same team is really something special. they made world cup days official holidays but, when Costa Rica got into Cup, unless you were in the rain forest, you heard a collective eruption of cheers from every single location in the country. i got really into while i was there and know (at least, sort of) what you mean when you talk about the way folks come together during the world cup.

the US and England are in the same grouping, aren't we?

G - That story was fantastic and left me in awe of the city of New Orleans.

The sort of emotions you are talking about I can comprehend - I've seen Tottenham win two cup finals and seen England win the Rugby World Cup in 03, I saw the Pats win two Superbowls (but I was kind of on my own in celebration there). I have also been on the horrible end too seeing Tottenham also lose two cup finals, seeing England lose the Rugby World Cup Final in 07 and seeing the Pats lose to the Giants so MAKE SURE YOU ENJOY IT BECAUSE THESE THINGS DON'T HAPPEN EVERYDAY AND THEY SHOULD BE TREASURED!

And yes England play the USA in the opening game of our World Cup Group - me, Hotspur, 2 of my other brothers and a few friends are actually going to South Africa for that game and England's other group games.

How long is the flight to South Africa from England?

posted by Ben_HotspurPatriot on 02/09/2010 3:01 PM

It's around 11 to 12 hours from London Heathrow to Cape Town, yet it's the same time zone haha

posted by Ben_HotspurPatriot on 02/09/2010 3:03 PM

The flight duration is okay with me and my Dad... I flew 13 hours to Hong Kong to visit a Uni friend last Easter holidays. God knows what my two brothers will be like though the longest flight they have done was to Florida - and I'm sure the prospect of Disney World a few years ago was enough to keep them bearable lol!!!!

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/09/2010 3:05 PM

Haha!  That's awesome.  I have no idea why, but I stare at the time zone map for at least 3-4 minutes every time I take a long flight anywhere.  There's something mesmerizing about it!

Oops, saw you were on Purdue, here is a write up from one of my services re Purdue-MSU game:

3 Unit Play. #552 Take Michigan State -2 ½ over Purdue (9 pm ESPN) Purdue has come back down after a hot start to open the season and this is a very important game for Michigan State. If the Spartans lose this game, their Big Ten lead has evaporated and they will be in a four way tie in the loss column. We would really go strong on this game but the status of Kalin Lucas is still up in the air. I think that he will play, even if it is not his normal minutes. Michigan State is 13-0 this season at the Breslin Center and Purdue has not won in East Lansing since 1998. Michigan State has always bounced back well as they are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 games following a straight-up loss. The Spartans need this game badly and Coach Izzo will not let them be denied.

yes Purdue did come back down to earth after starting 14-0 and then dropping 3 straight but they they have won there last 5 going 2-3 ats all as Favorites they have not been an underdog this year. Michigan state hasnt covered a game this year when favored by 3.5 or less what they fail to mention is that Purdue is 3-1 ats vs st 1-1 at MSU over last 3 years so a small ml play on state may be warranted I think they are a different team without Lucas 100% I am takin the points I like air force and bradley on the ML

Moreover, he treats everyone with great cordiality.

Sorry for my bad English.

the bottom line is that I want you guys buying plays because you WANT the play, not because you feel bad for collecting my knowledge.

I know it's not easy to work a Paid Play into a budget on a nightly basis, so I appreciate whatever you guys are willing to do!

It's all about winning!!!

I'm watching the Pistons game and there is NO ONE at this game in Milwaukee. Very sad. I took the Pistons, which I rarely do, at +9. They're up 27-18 right now. You don't see the Pistons getting that many points too often even though they are playing awful and are going to be in the lottery. That number just looked too big to me.

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/09/2010 5:49 PM

Haha, I agree JT, just looked like TOO MANY points in that game.  I didn't have a side, but I saw a lot of people on Milwaukee because of the hot streak, but that line was inflated, big time.

Lloyd - My baseball notes might make their way back into the forum, just because they're not generally quite as extensive as my notes on basketball.  Takes longer for me to type stats than it does to type paragraphs for whatever reason.  I'll ask RJ what he prefers I do, since I guess I could really post my baseball numbers in either place.

Dan -- sorry about the Pacers. I actually ran small with Sacremento tonight as I thought they would hang around the Knicks long enough to make things interesting after melting down against the Raptors the other night. Didn't expect an SU win though as those are very rare with the Kings on the road.  Time to kick back with a victory beer and enjoy my Thunder. Biggest news around here today was locking in the Edmonton Oilers minor league team next season... pucking ay!

Mark - nice call on Sactown!  I should have played my lean on that Over, courtesy of the OT, I guess, but I think I'm glad I avoided it altogether.

Pacers meltdown really pissed me off; had to walk away from the TV for a few minutes to gather my thoughts.  Denver playing a damn fine game, so we're still in position to have a positive day if the late public disaster comes through with our play on LAC

Thunder started 14-2 and lead by as many as 13 so of *course* it's tied at the half. Why I said it was a big fat pass tonight (but they are fun to watch!). Dan, any insight as to a big man they could acquire for 2010-11? Don't see OKC as being sexy enough for Bosh but there's a couple others that may be an excellent fit to go with Durant and we've got some money available where other teams aren't as fortunate.

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/09/2010 8:17 PM

the Thunder are in GREAT shape, but I honestly haven't really looked at the names coming free.

I think they'd be solid with a standard POSTING UP big guy.  Doesn't even need to be a superstar, but someone with some bulk not named Nick f'in Collison.

That guy BLOWS

I think I'm on another streak there.  haha, I'm more streaky in Props than regular plays.

Honestly, though, I hope you guys know that I actually PRIDE myself on having some of the FEWEST peaks and valleys of any capper out there.

Those of you that have been following me since turning Pro know that we're not winning 90% one week and 20% the next, and I hope you guys enjoy that low-stress approach to gaming!

posted by denmarkok on 02/09/2010 8:47 PM

Very nice half for the Clips. As a former Jayhawk, Collison is semi-popular but a weak link nonetheless. What are your thoughts on Brook Lopez? Is he better than that dumpster fire called the Nets or would it be better to draft and develop a new talent? It seems it's tough to guage mid-draft level talent where the post is concerned

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/09/2010 8:51 PM

Brook Lopez is a future star, no question in my mind, but the Nets are going to cling to that guy like Lopez is goin' out of style!

I don't know who the free agents are coming up unfortunately - do you know where that list might be sitting?

Hey Bebe's,

I'm back mate, I finished work early too hot over here, I'm an antenna installer and in the tin roof it's around 45 degrees (not sure what that is in your temp though) but over 110F. Done two jobs so that will be fine by me!

Well done on your free Denver play mate, great call, you read it beautifully!!! Just need the Clips to keep playing well and your 2-1 for the day!

Can I just ask you this one again mate?

In regard to line value, I can remember reading that your or one of the other cappers use the statfox website for getting an idea on what lines should be. Was it you and do you take that info into deciding what your expected lines might be?

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/09/2010 9:01 PM

Just started perusing the list - how do you feel about Zydrunas?  Too slow?

posted by denmarkok on 02/09/2010 9:04 PM

Slow isn't necessarily a bad thing as the Thunder are one of the absolute quickest teams in setting the perimeter I've ever seen. When they start firing that thing around the outside it's almost Globetrotter-esque at times. That's exactly when I wish we had an inside-out combo. Harden has been sick off the bench and Thunder D is having their way with the Blazers the last few minutes.

Clips look good out of the locker room in the 3rd!

They are a couple of years and one BIG man away from being a relatively serious team,

Who let the Jazz back into that game?????

Eh, Utah will make some runs - both teams are playing hard right now, I like where we sit, so let's just keep it close until the very end!

I'll take your word for it but didn't know how effective LAC was about closing out a 4th quarter. Just watched one west coast home team meltdown in the last period (and Durant wasn't even on the floor for a lot of that!)

Wow, are we going to be looking at TWO 4th quarter meltdowns today?

That would be tough to stomach.

Do you have 5 or 5 1/2?

Took 5.5 at bodog this afternoon - always get that best line!!

Ah Bodog...GF says I need to have an out there and at 5 dimes as well.

Oh wow.

Okay, that exchange I think clearly illustrates this was not our day.

Baron Davis ALONE blows a layup that would have cut the Jazz lead to 4 points.  Utah comes right back and dunks to push the lead to 8.  That was the cover.  I mean, a professional NBA player, how do you miss a layup all by yourself?

Baron Davis is officially on my sh*t list.

I have to say, though, that loss is, for some reason, easier to take than the Indy loss, if just because it seemed like the basketball lords conspired to make sure the Clippers would just give that cover away.  That loss was almost silly, and I hope anyone that looks at the box score reads these few posts here to REALLY know what happened at the end of that game.

wow. get outscored by 13 and 14 in the 4th quarter in 2 different games today. it happens, but it still sucks. man, those are tough losses.

It's called a Baron Davis choke at the 1:17 mark. Sorry about that one.

Tough loss, Dan.  I didn't like the play much (and voiced that to you last night), I thought the over was the way to go.  You had the game pegged right on the first 3 quarters though.  Shoulda had it.

I'm sorry, G.  I don't know what to say about those games.

We had both covers by numbers you need 2 hands to count.

If I can take ALL 3 of my plays into the 4th quarter covering, I'd take that every night.  We just had the Pacers go ICE COLD from the perimeter, and we had the Clippers, as Mark noted, CHOKE away the cover.

Makes me sick that the winner tonight was the smallest of the 3 plays.

What makes me sicker is that tomorrow's card doesn't look all that enticing, despite 10 games!

I need a good night's rest to come to terms with the 2 meltdowns.  OUCH OUCH OUCH.

2-2 in the last 2 days. 2 easy easy wins and 2 tough tough losses. should've at least been 3-1 and maybe 4-0. right calls, Dan. just bad beats.

You were right, buddy!

I had a strong lean to the Over, too, and went with the side, figuring the public had hit about 3-4 of these late-night bailouts in a row, but hey, the huge public teams go on runs, and it's probably a good time to avoid those late bailouts until the public starts getting crushed again.

I imagine that day is right around the corner.  Clearly, I picked the wrong game as my top play, since my last 2 wins have been by 20+, and my two losses have been the results of 4th quarter debacles.  We could be 4-0 last 2 days pretty easily right now if the Pacers would have run a play instead of dumping it into Roy Hibbert on 2 straight possessions at the end of the game, and if Baron Davis makes a shot he makes 99 times out of 100.

Oh well!  we're down a fraction of a unit this week, so nothing to go crazy about, and that's the key - slow growth, but that means we WILL get hit with a terribly unlucky day every so often.  I still think I'm seeing things pretty damn clearly, and just got burned by some bad final 12-minute stretches.

Movin' on!

Cuious to see the Bucks/ Nets line with Milwaukee getting popped at home...they may want to dial up an ass-kicking of the hapless Nets going into the break.

Dan, you scared to come into my threads?  I won't bite.  I know you will bounce back with some winners tomorrow.  Take care.

My apologies Dan.  That meeting messed up my morning.  Good luck with your future plays.

man, i am seeing so many public winners these days on lines that look like huge traps that it's just blowing my mind. CBB has been a goldmine for the public lately. i've been fading the public in some of those places and am just getting killed on those. what the hell is going on with the lines these days? or, what the hell is going on with the sharps helping to keep these lines where they're at? as Tony Soprano would say, I am miffled.

i know it's not as easy as simply fading the public but, i figure when there's a shit-ton on one side and a line just sitting still or moving the opposite way that there's steam behind the unpopular team and that there is steam behind them for a reason (absent an injury or other news). is what is going on right now just an anomoly? Pretty frustrated right now ...

Someone make me feel better.
