Push You Around: NBA RoundUp for 2/1

by Dan Bebe on 01/31/2010 10:07 PM
Boy, with even a smidgen of luck, we would have had a 2-0 sweep on Sunday. Instead, we had to watch helplessly as the Magic made 4 straight free throws down the stretch to turn a 4-point cover into one of the worst "pushes" a man can stomach, and while we are still boasting a decidedly winning 1-0-1 record for the day, that game felt like it was taken away from us. It's not right of me to complain about a push, but you guys know me -- I'm a perfectionist at heart, and I go into every game expecting it to be a winner, even though we all know that's insane.

Whatever the case, we're still straight up rolling! Paid Plays are now 8-4-1 over the last 13, and the Lakers-Celtics Under pushed our Free Premium run to 8-4, as well! The 16-8 combined NBA run is nothing to scoff at, and we continue to produce winners on a daily basis. The weekend saw us fire off a 4-0-1 record, a great way to bounce back after the Thursday TNT debacle last week.

So, we move forward, and while less than half the games have lines, I already see a few situational spots I like quite a bit.

Sports Wagering

Celtics @ Wizards - Washington collecting 5.5 at home with a total of 191. Oh me, oh my. This one looks awfully tempting; let's see if the angles back the infamous home 5.5-point dog. At first glance, I would say they do, though the angles aren't terribly numerous. I'll try to break the game down in order of importance. The biggest issue in this one is the back-to-back. Boston has not played well on back-to-back games, as their old, tired legs have led to a 2-7 ATS record in the second half of such situations. This wouldn't be interesting, except that we know how good Boston is as a team (29-15 SU), but they're just 4-5 SU on the second half of back-to-backs, as well. That combination of numbers would seem to indicate that the Celtics are, in fact, effected by the schedule, and what's more, this will actually be their 4th game in 5 nights - not at all a good spot for them. If Boston can hold it together for 2 quarters, it will be a triumph. The next most important angle is the letdown. Boston, as many of you saw on ABC, gave up a 4th quarter lead to the Lakers, and were buried by a Kobe Bryant contested fall-away jumper with 7 seconds left. That looked awfully similar to the way Boston lost in Orlando a few days back, and they proceeded to get spanked in Atlanta the next night. I'm not arguing Washington is going to be doing any spanking (unless Boston's into that sort of thing, hah), but I definitely feel the Celtics emanating pain and despair. The third point, amazingly, is revenge, though for the Wizards, it's tough to argue that they are somehow "mad" at the Celtics. I think Sac made a better point in the forum that it's more about "retooling" and having another crack at a team that beat you earlier. So, we have the Wizards, who have been gameplanning for this contest, and the Celtics, who spent their recent games dealing with the Magic, Hawks and Lakers, and I would imagine, have gameplanned for the Wizards about as long as their practice hours are this coming afternoon. The Wizards, by the way, have won 2 in a row, so they're playing decent basketball, at least as far as "decent" goes. I lean to Washington; no lean on the total.

Bucks @ Heat - This line is OFF. This game is the second half of a Heat/Bucks home-and-home, with Milwaukee taking the game in Wisconsin 2 days ago, 95-84, easily covering the spread of 4 in a game that really wasn't that close from the midpoint of the 2nd quarter. It looked like Miami hadn't come to play, and by the time they decided to compete, Milwaukee was out ahead by 15 and had it on cruise control. Now, Miami gets a chance to avenge that rather lackluster performance by trying to drop the surging Bucks at home. I'm curious to see where this line opens up. The Heat were 4-point dogs on the second night of a back-to-back in the last one, so you'd figure if we drop 2 points out and rotate home court, Miami should be favored by 4. I would imagine the line will open up close to 4 or 4.5, and potentially move up a tick. Besides the revenge, though, this doesn't actually look like that great of a Heat wager. Still, these home-and-home situations are like their own special island in the middle of the NBA season. The Bucks have covered 7 games in a row, but that almost doesn't matter here, beyond the fact that they're making shots. The Heat have been a poor ATS team at home, but that, too, seems less important than usual because they are going to show they deserve to at least split 2 games with the Bucks. I think it's also important to note that because Miami was on that back-to-back in Milwaukee, they were inclined to play lackadaisical ball. Here, they're rested, and I expect a strong game from Miami; I lean Heat. The last game involved a total of 179, well beneath the 190 that was set. Let's react to this total when it comes out, because I think we might get some information just by looking at the line.

Lakers @ Grizzlies - Lakers by 2 with a total of 206.5. One more time, I'd like a ticket to Letdown City, please? I think there may be the misconception that the Lakers are just going to roll into town feeling damn good about themselves after that win in Boston and topple the Grizzlies, but I'm of the exact opposite school of thought. The Lakers have now won 4 in a row, and they, I'm sure, are looking pretty snazzy to the average bettor after the nationally televised win on Sunday afternoon. The Grizzlies probably don't look that snazzy, and really, it's amazing how quickly the public can forget. The Grizzlies covered 6 of 7 games before losing in San Antonio, and then at home to the Hornets, so suddenly the Grizzlies have gone from hero to zero. The Lakers have been just fine on back-to-back games, so that's not an issue here - LA is 9-3 SU (6-6 ATS), so we can throw that angle out the window. The more important one here is revenge. I think it's interesting how this revenge angle compares to the one we mentioned above in the Wizards game. In that one, we talked about how the Wizards don't expect to win, so it's really more of a "modified attack" game; this one, though, is more traditional revenge. The Grizzlies are an up-and-coming team, really enjoying the season and at 25-21 are in the thick of the Western Conference hunt. They came to LA, though, and got trounced by 16, and I believe this is a team that wants to show the "big dog" that they're good enough to compete. I also like that the Lakers are on the last game of a road trip, so at least, let's say, 15% of the team is probably going to be looking ahead to getting home and seeing children, their flat screen TVs, etc. I lean Memphis. I also think we might see some points scored in this one if the Grizzlies dictate the tempo - that being said, Memphis has seemed content lately to play a more defensive game. I actually lean to the Under, since the obvious choice here is to expect fireworks.

Suns @ Hornets - This line is OFF. Stupid Chris Paul is costing us a shot at a middle right now. The Suns playing an overtime game with the Rockets will likely move this line another point in favor of the Hornets, but without a line to begin with, this one is going to look awfully juicy for Suns-backers. And it may very well be just that succulent. If Chris Paul is forced to miss another game, I'm just not sure that we'll see another career night from Darren Collison, and we all know how poor the Hornets are at covering home favorite spreads. Since we really are going to be basing our views of this game largely on the presence (or lack thereof) of Chris Paul, it's tough to fully handicap it, but a few notes are worth mentioning. The Suns appear to be building momentum. The big question off the TNT Thursday win over Dallas was whether Phoenix would regress or come out strong in the next game, and we saw clearly that they're playing with a ton of heart with this overtime win in Houston. Obviously, there are going to be some tired legs with multiple Suns logging over 40 minutes, but I just don't trust the Hornets at home to cover what's sure to be a spread of ample size (if CP3 plays). The Hornets are a robust 16-5 SU at home, but 10-11 ATS; they are 15-6 SU as a favorite (7-14 ATS), and 11-4 SU as a home favorite (5-10 ATS). This team is a disaster as a home fave; they play close games almost every night, making them a wonderful dog (16-10 ATS), but a team that just cannot be trusted to put anyone away, at least no one with the firepower of the Suns. Plus, Amare Stoudemire fouled out of the game with Houston, so he won't be quite as fatigued as the others. These teams have split two previous meetings, with each club winning the home affair, and covering, but despite that, I lean to Phoenix on the side. The totals in the two prior meetings were 128 and 113. Let's see where this one opens up, and we'll take it from there.

Kings @ Nuggets - This line is OFF. The Nuggets return home off a fine road performance in San Antonio in the Sunday morning ABC game. I guess we know which team wakes up faster between those two. Now, we get to see if the Kings can ever get things straightened out. The Kings are tanking at an alarming rate; I mean, we're talking very, very ugly. The Kings went 2-13 in the month of January SU, and 3-11-1 ATS, so it has been an epic tailspin, and I just can't tell if we've hit rock bottom. It almost doesn't matter, and this may come as something of a surprise, but this is a double-revenge spot for the Nugs, who have lost twice to the Kings in Sacramento, with both games going Under. Now, Denver gets their chance to push the tempo and blow Sacramento out of the building. The real question in this game is whether Carmelo Anthony will play, because if so, this line might be pretty huge. I almost hope he doesn't play so we can deal with a line closer, to, say 10, instead of 12-14. Bottom line here is that I don't trust the Kings. They have lost every single road game thus far in 2010, and even if they manage to keep it close with Denver for a few minutes in this one, there's such a slim hope that they can compete for all 48 minutes. Denver is going to be on a back-to-back, which actually should work to our advantage, since we'll get a nice little 2-point line drop. I'm very interested in where this line opens up, as I lean just a bit to Denver, and I think there may be some value, once again, in the Under, since the Kings can't seem to score. They've played to 4 unders and push in their last 5, and I think Denver's involvement in this game should inflate the total just a hair.

Mavericks @ Jazz - This line is OFF. Will Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer play? Deron Williams is a "maybe", and Boozer is likely out. I certainly think Paul Millsap is about as capable a replacement as you can find, but another game with Ronnie Price running the point might start to take a little toll on Utah. The Jazz have been playing dominant basketball, winning 9 of 10 games, straight up, and going 9-1-2 ATS in their last 12, so this is not a team to be taken lightly. I do think, though, that they may be hitting that point where the team is starting to become overvalued against the line, and we can anticipate a few failed covers of large home spreads in the not-so-distant future. Hell, we might have seen the start of it with their home win over Sacramento, but failed cover. Now, they welcome one of the better road teams in the NBA, but a slumping version of the Mavs. Dallas's defense has been horrible lately, allowing over 100 points in 3 straight games, while playing to 4 straight Overs, and going 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games. I believe the most important angle in this game is revenge. Dallas beat Utah in the first meeting this year, but Utah came back to Dallas 3 weeks ago and creamed the Mavs by 18 as a 5.5-point dog. Dallas is going to want to go into Utah and get a win, or at the very least, we can expect a solid full-game effort. Despite the recent cold stretch, the Mavs are still 15-10 ATS on the road, so they can certainly compete, and if they're getting a few points in this one, I'm inclined to lean Mavericks. If the Jazz are healthy with Deron, I like the Over thanks to Dallas's awful defense this month, but if there are players missing, I might just dodge this total (and maybe the side, too) altogether.

Bobcats @ Blazers - This line is OFF. I guess Brandon Roy has been upgraded from "out" to "questionable", though he wasn't supposed to return until the middle of the week. I guess time will tell. Assuming Roy is still out, this is a nice spot for the surging Bobcats. Charlotte lost the opener of their current 6-game road trip in Denver, but have since responded with 3 straight wins in Phoenix, Golden State and Sacramento. Now, they continue on their sweeping trip across the Pacific with this contest at the Rose Garden. This, guys, is one of those games where I think it's important to just try to simplify things. Sure, the Blazers actually beat the Bobcats in Charlotte earlier this year, so there is some revenge mixed into this little ATS cocktail, but for the most part, I think we're looking at a team where you just want to stay out of their way until they lose. So, either we like Charlotte or nothing. The Bobcats do play the Lakers on Wednesday, but I'm not sure this is a traditional look-ahead spot, since Charlotte is in a zone right now, focused on each and every game and working toward moving up in the Eastern playoff standings. I just love their recent ability to lock down on high-scoring, zero-defense teams, and I'd be willing to wager they have a decent gameplan for this one, as they certainly have game tape from the November meeting to work off. I lean Bobcats. On the total, well, this could be interesting. The last game featured 154 points, 17 under the posted mark of 171, but I actually think we'll see this one open up a bit higher than 171. The Bobcats have played to 5 overs and a push in their last 6, and the Blazers are on a streak of 6 consecutive overs. Another situation, I think, where we should just ride the wave and look at the Over, unless the line is so absurd or the movement so severe that we need to turn our heads.

nice read Dan.. I'm also thinking Bynum would be tentative in his movements in this game.. He just wants to leave Memphis without getting injured..

It's kinda scary to back wizards against boston but yeah boston is tired and their moral is down after losing 3 straight games against big teams.. But they might be motivated to beat wizards and show up to let people know they are still one of the best teams.. what do you think Dan?

dan, a hearty congrats/sorry about the push. you're plays won 100% today though, and I'd bet most cappers can't say that. onto tomorrow ...

i like the griz a lot, maybe my favorite play on the board. i could honestly see this being one of those games where the lakeshow loses by 12 or more. just love that they're coming off the humongous win over the celts and i agree with you that mempho is gonna be up up up for this game and will want to prove itself as a contender in the West.

i likewise like the mavs a bunch. you always have to lean dallas on the road and w/ the revenge angle and with public perception on utah at a season high it's a great spot for dallas. we'll wait to see what the deal is with deron, the line, and what the %s are but, if this comes out where i think it will, around 5.5, I'm gonna have a hard time not taking the jazz.

and, i honestly kind of like boston. i feel like they'll come out pissed like a mother fu%^er and will go stomp on the wizards. the wiz have won two in a row but, those were against the lowly nets (by only 2) and the knicks, who are struggling hard, losing 9 of their last 12.  meanwhile, we've got boston, who has lost 6 of their last 8 (covering just 1 of 8 and barely covering that one in a loss to orlando), and several of those were on the road where they used to be road warriors. however, several of their recent losses were to top teams in the league.  maybe i'd be playing with fire here, Dan, with a let down situation but, i feel like at 5, we're getting damn good value on boston. 2 weeks ago this line would have been in the 8.5 -9 range. i hear your points, Dan, but, I just like Boston on what I see as a short line against a bad Wizards team. we'll see what the public does tomorrow.  i can't imagine more than 50% would be on the wizards, and that worries me some. we'll see.

Woah, an essay from the G-man!  Let me get to these posts 1 by 1.

Anjo - I don't like Boston in this one. I think the "bounceback" is an overrated theory, especially when a team is playing back-to-back.  If they beat the Wizards, it will come on a late surge; that's my feeling.

Gomez - I'm trying man - so many injuries to deal with lately!

CHRIS PAUL OUT 2 MONTHS, NEEDS KNEE SURGERY.

My fantasy team just died, and that Hornets game just got a bit more interesting...

yeah, my bad, Dan. i didn't realize it was that long until i saw it displayed after I posted it. i know you won't agree the boston thought, and I hear ya on the phantom bounceback thing. in fact, i think i told you the other day when you were on minny that i was worried about an LAC bounceback after the loss to the lowly nets and you grabbed me by the neck and told me that my bounceback theory was nonsense and that i needed to follow your advice. i did, and won money because of it.

yeah maybe the celtics are over rated at this point.. I think there are lot's of people backing the celtics against the wiz..

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/31/2010 8:43 PM

Yeah, even with Boston losing that many games, it's tough to see the public taking the Wizards instead.

I'm glad we agree on Memphis, though.  The Grizzle should be a pretty strong wager, as both LAL and BOS are in a spot to suffer a letdown.  You are correct, though, that the Lakers letdown should be more severe than Boston's.

The Mavs have just played no defense lately, so even though I do lean their direction in Utah, I'm having trouble convincing myself the side is a better play than the total.

posted by guevones on 01/31/2010 9:19 PM

yeah --- i'm interested in seeing where the utah/mavs line comes out. i don't typically like to fade utah at home and i am game for the idea of looking at the total.

speaking of totals, i had the under in that knicks game and it was the oddest thing. the teams total 95 at half (game total 210) so i'm feeling good at half and barely keep up in the 2nd half. the teams score a good bit in the 3rd but i'm still ok and, with about 6:30 left in the 4th quarter the game isn't close and the total is about 36 or 37 away so, i'm feeling pretty good still. then, in the next 3.5 minutes, the teams proceed to score about 25 or 26 points and get the total to 201 with 3 minutes to play. naturally, i think i'm about to have to go see the ass doctor immediately. minny then calls a timeout and in the final 3 minutes the teams combine to score 2 points. it was almost as if minn called the TO so that the teams could regroup and remember that this game was "supposed" to go under.

i don't usually believe in shit like that but, it sure was bizarre and i was happy to be on the winning end of it.

Nets have covered 3 in a row - that's pretty derned unexpected. and they have the lowly pistons coming to town on tuesday for a possible fourth straight cover. glad i decided against fading the nets every single game after that .25 unit loss against LAC the other night.

posted by guevones on 01/31/2010 10:04 PM

Dan, you're right. the numbers always catch up. those last 2 games that the Nets have covered they only covered by 1.5 to 2 points. in December those would have been Nets ATS losses but after they got even worse in January and folks saw that they could fade them every play and make cash the oddsmakers pushed the lines even higher on the Nets in order to make them able to cover a few here and there.

JT -

My play will be posted shortly after recording the podcast, so probably around 1-2pm eastern time?

It's tough for me - I REALLY want to get it up earlier, but I don't get to see over night line moves until 11am, then we record the show, I post links everywhere, and before I know it, it's 12:30 eastern time.

Then, I compare my own numbers with what I'm seeing from line movement at books, check injury reports, go over my matchups again, and type up the MONSTER write-ups that I try to put out with every play.  So I would say, on average, my plays will be up between 1-2pm eastern time.

Sweetriver -

As I just mentioned to Ben, obviously it's unfortunate that most people pushed (myself included), but when I put the play out, the line was still at +5, and I'm NEVER going to fudge the numbers.

That being said, knowing that a good 20-25% of you guys waited and got down on the play at +5.5 is AWESOME news, because that's why I'm selling these plays.  Not so that I can continue to win, myself, but so that you all can get winners on a daily basis, so it's a "push" in my recordbook, but if YOUR bankroll grew, then that's just a sweet bonus!

utah favored by only 4 to dallas at home. williams probable. very interesting.

miami by 6.5! wasn't milwaukee favored by 4.5 at home over miami? 11 point home-home swing? definite inflation there as you predicted, dan.

denver laying 11.5 w/ anthony probable. seems like a fair enough line though i'd go with denver there.

gotta lean towards NOH laying 1.5 with PHO coming off that OT win last night. although, how does NOH react to the news that CP3 is out for 2 months ... does PHO keep this small amt of momentum they have going ...

still like Mempho the best of all of these plays ...

eff Boston. public all over them and the line has gone down to 4.5 in some spots. just don't know if i can mess with that now.

The line on Portland / Bobcats 190.5 , what are bookies expecting here ? This seems too much for me ...Very strange line i would say :) they  know sometihng we don't ...:((((((

Don't see this game 190 tempo ..

G -

Agreed man.  Very interesting in Utah...not sure what to make of it yet, but I still lean towards a play on the total rather than the side.

Monster inflation in Miami, as I DO feel the Heat win, but I'm not sure if they cover just yet.  I think the Bucks were favored by 3.5 in that game a few days ago, no?  Doesn't matter, really. I think the Heat being on a back-to-back in that game in Milwaukee needs to drop 2 points off the swing, so it's really more of a 8-9 point swing than 11, STILL quite large.

Denver line looks fair to me, too.

New Orleans is a game I don't want to touch!

Memphis looks good still.

Wizards still look better to me than the Celts.

Foxcro -

Be CAREFUL there.  That line being THAT high after the previous meeting ended in the 150's is a CLEAR indication that oddsmakers STRONGLY feel this game will feature some points!  BOTH teams have played to the Over in 5-6 straight!

sure is tough to call a straight up win by the Grizz over the Lakers, no matter the situational angles.

tough to fade Milwaukee right now too.

posted by guevones on 02/01/2010 9:56 AM

hell na. i rarely play parlays or the ML. every once in a while I will play ML parlays, considering you can get close to straight up odds on 2 teams who are otherwise favored by 5.5 or 6 favs, essentially getting a 2 game 6 point each teaser. still, you have to win 2 games to win your play, and i just don't much like that in basketball.

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/01/2010 10:14 AM

and Dan i was bored the other day on iTunes and searched "betting" and saw "today in sports betting.." and listened to a few podcasts and really enjoyed it so i became a member here. i would always make picks on point spreads for fun but recently starting doing it for money and im having a blast with it. and i won all 3 of my picks yesterday with your advice i went Under for both Lakers and Magic games and picked Min in the point spread. Great picks man.

Dan I'm leaning Blazers and Mavs... noticed you leaned towards Charlotte when the line was off. Has your stance changed now the line is out, or was 1.5 kind of what you were expecting?

posted by guevones on 02/01/2010 10:56 AM

kidding only, sublime. actually, a 4 game parlay is the highest my book will let me go. not sure why. i rarely play parlays. do it every once in a while for $10 when i like absolutely nothing but want a little action on a game. i did hit a 4 gamer in the nfl one day taking all big dogs. was pretty sweet.

G - it's not quite Egypt, but I'm inclined to bet Sunderland tonight in the Premiership. I say this because though Sunderland have been in shameful form recently; they have played 3 away games in a row which can help explain that form. Sunderland are usually pretty good at home and Stoke are dire away from home - Stoke's only win away from home came against my Tottenham (a game I was at) and I can tell you Stoke were outplayed for the entire game and if it were not for a heroic goalkeeping display they should have lost by 3 or 4. It was a crime they won that game.

Although I wouldn't call it a game I would be icnredibly 'high' on the odds are better than they should be (11/10) - they really should be around (10/11 or 5/6) in my opinion. I think there is about a 60% chance they win, 25% chance of a draw and 15% chance of a stoke win.

If you decide to play it please do so recreationally I don't want to cost you.

My early attention has been caught by Denver under, I actually like the Bucks at 6.5 and Dan, I found your write up on Washington and to a lesser degree Memphis very intriuging.  I also have a feeling for the Suns although I wish they hadn't played OT last night

Ben -

I like that play on Mavs, but I fear the Blazers.  Bobcats are a steamtrain right now, and I'm not saying I'd play on Charlotte, but I find that hunting for their letdown spot has been somewhat difficult so far.  If they're DUE, this would be the spot, but they're giving REALLY strong efforts every game, and it's tough to bet against that.

However, sunderland look like the only team scoring so we're in okay shape.

88% on Boston and you can still get 5? It takes it off the 5.5 number and brings into play the free throws in the last 11 seconds------looks too easy.

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/01/2010 1:07 PM

Haha, hey Dave -

Yeah, creepy line in that one...I love that it's not moving...I think it's at 5.5 at bodog, and I think it'llhit 5.5 elsewhere closer to tip (when the wiseguys stop betting), so if you like washington, bet it later, if you like boston (which I would suggest is a little bit of a scary bet), take it now...

posted by guevones on 02/01/2010 2:01 PM

davessler ---- i'll tell you how you come to the decision not to play washington: you watch em play a few times and realize that when they're on, they're average, and when they're not on, they're one of the worst teams in the league. combine that with the Arenas nightmare and the notion that they've got false confidence now from beating the struggling knicks and the nets and I see a team that is not one i could back.

Hahaha, hey guys, sorry about that - my computer was freaking out, I think the live stream i was watching of washington/boston was using up all my RAM, somehow.

In any case, let's see if I can't address a few notes here:

Coutu - Foye looks HORRIBLE, but Mike Miller is playing a GREAT game so far, so I guess it evens out.  I don't like that Denver/Sactown game; with Tyreke Evans out, I would lean to Sactown to step up, actually, but I think that's a PASS first and foremost.

Dave - Not a bad first half for Washington, not a good first half for the Under...high-scoring 2nd quarter there, as Boston just kept turning it over, leading to quicker scores.

G - You know I love to drop a WTF play on you from time to time!

Sink - Good evening my friend! Hahaha, funny feedback on the podcast! I won't tell him :)  Hope you wake up to a bankroll of CASH

JT - Yep, and now Pierce and Caron crash into each other going into halftime.  Silly game, so far!

G - large apologies on Sunderland, though I feel a little hard done by - if the referee wasn't such a WIMP then Sunderland would have won - he didn't have the bollox to award Sunderland at least 1 of the several clear penalty appeals or send a Stoke player off after he kicked Cattermole. I hope you played it recreationally and I didn't cost you anything dear.

I'm back from exam celebrations, which did include a visit to the casino and a 5 unit profit on roulette - unfortunately all my friends seemed to have lost. So let's go Mavs to cao this night off. Both your free and paid plays dannyboy look DECENTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT atm!

Let's keep your fantastic run roling!

If I recall from when i looked that one over, Matt, I think I liked Charlotte, too, but Portland isn't going to give up or get overpowered like Golden State and Sactown.  I think it should be a good game!

In these situations, I skip the game, but if you had to pick, I'd say ride the wave.

Gonna be tough to hit the Wiz under but I did play is smaller than the Wiz so I can make out ahead either way if Wash can hold tight here.

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/01/2010 6:17 PM

Well, given Washington has scored 4 points in HALF this quarter, the under is looking better and better.  Of course, the play on the Wiz is going down the toilet if they can't make a damn bucket!!

posted by jtevans on 02/01/2010 6:19 PM

G and Ben,

The public was all over Stoke today (+.5). I also made a play on Sunderland. We were very unlucky. I really thought Sunderland would pull it out at home. With the World Cup fast approaching you would think Darren Bent would be scoring more goals to get into the squad!!

posted by sweetriver on 02/01/2010 6:20 PM

ok, thought on the wiz, looks like you think their gonna lose it down the stretch eh Dan?

Tight game in D.C.. I hope they can cover..

posted by Ben on 02/01/2010 6:33 PM

JT- firstly Bent knows he ain't going to the world cup... I mean the 4 strikers that are DEFINITELY going are Rooney, Heskey, Defoe, Crouch... then you have C.Cole that will most probably be going, then Agbonlahor that would be 6th in line and then Bent. Bent has scored a lot of goals this year, but he isn't top notch - that I assure you.

I do agree Sunderland should have won, Howard Webb displayed a poor display in refereeing... a stronger referee would have made the tough, but CORRECT decision which would have won sunderland the game. My fear always with this was a nil nil, as I always thought Stoke would probably not score.

As for Keane...  HALLELUJAH... what a pile of crap he is nowadays. I have never been a fan of him to be honest and what he did have has deserted him over the last two seasons. I hope he does okay at Celtic so they buy him after his loan spell - I never want to see him back in a white shirt at the Lane, because he is SH*T!!!!

And I will put my life on it Hotspur agrees with me - he is also a Tottenham fan.

Makes you wonder about the officials, sometimes...

Well guys, let's try to get the FREE play, because the Wizards just crapped right down their leg in that 4th quarter.

They shot something like 39% in the game. Unlucky guys. Can't win them all.

10 f*cking 4th quarter points.  F*ucking goddamn sick.  Some losses piss you off waaaaaaaaay more than others and this is one of them.  If Rudy Gay's Horse shot ends up costing them a cover I am just gonna shit.

It really does seem like the refs are not paying attention tonight.

WJ - I don't mean to be confrontational on a night when the plays aren't going well, but not playing on a team like the Grizzlies is definitely not the answer.  Just look at the Lakers/Celtics ATS records, and look at teams like Memphis.  Lakers and Celts are both well below .500 against the spread.  Grizzlies are 26-20 ATS. So it's about finding the value in lesser teams, always.

posted by guevones on 02/01/2010 7:27 PM

wJ ---- you mean like minnesota or milwaukee?

posted by wj6735 on 02/01/2010 7:27 PM

I guess Mr Bebe, your the pro, but there is a reason good teams get the calls and awful ones do not. Also good teams will very rarely score 10 points in the 4th. I buy your plays and will continue to.

posted by wj6735 on 02/01/2010 7:29 PM

Guevones sometimes it seems as when you get on board with a team for example Mil. You can say they are whatever verus the spread but if they are hot they seem to cover in a streak.

posted by Lloyd Christmas on 02/01/2010 7:36 PM

Dan, you have to be professional and cordial but I dont.  WJ, get a clue before you make comments like that.  Do you think the people who make a living at this only bet on the Lakers, Magic, Yankees, Phillies, Colts, Saints?  Think about that answer and you'll know why we bet on the Wizards and Grizz sometimes.

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/01/2010 7:36 PM

Very true WJ, very true.  I definitely agree with that statement.

That's precisely why we have to look for those times when the "bad" team is undervalued and getting more points on the spread than they deserve, like Milwaukee lately, or Minnesota.  I thought that was the case with Washington, but clearly I was wrong on that one, and I also think that's the case with Memphis (who really isn't that bad), and they're making a few plays down the stretch here to really try to win this one.  Go Grizz!

posted by gcoutu_9 on 02/01/2010 7:36 PM

LOL, Gay nails a 3 then Kobe get a 3 ball to hit the rim 4 times and drop.  Grizz gotta finish here up 2 with 23 secs and Lakers have no timeouts

Lyold I never said Only bet Public teams but to avoid all teams because they are assumed to be a public play is being ignorant.

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/01/2010 7:41 PM

There we go!  I have no idea how Mike Conley went from missing both free throws to the Grizz winning, but we get the split, BOTH PLAYS were for 1-unit today, as I stated earlier, they were both of equal quality today, and because I am only allowed to sell one play a day, that is going to happen from time to time, where we have co-Top Plays.

Congrats to all Grizzlies-backers, I think we can stomach a split, eh guys??

WJ, I think we should make plays on the public side when the situation is right.

I believe my selection of San Antonio over the weekend was a public pick.

It's always about picking our spots, and I think we've done a nice job of that lately!

Awesome WJ!

It's always about improving little by little.  I know sometimes it seems nuts to play these shitbag teams, and sometimes it IS nuts to play 'em, but as long as we can continue to break down the angles, and make sure we pick the crappy teams at advantageous prices and on nights where they are the team with better motivational keys, I think we can continue to hit more often than lose.

We're still on a nice little 17-9 run with today's break-even go, so I'd say we're hanging in there!!

Thanks Dan.  I loved Memphis last night, but backed off  today.  Then as I was finalizing my card I saw  you were very confident on the Griz, so I added them.  Glad I did too, as the wizards poor 4th cost me my over and the Hornets put up too little too late, to drop me to 0-2 before the Memphis game.  Now all I need is the blazers to go over, and I'm home free.

Thanks again for the bailout buddy!

P.S. Sorry the Wiz folded on ya too

Dan you think Milwaukee's time to lose has finally come? 2nd night of back to back against orlando?

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/01/2010 8:10 PM

You're welcome guys!  No worries about the Wiz - obviously, I wanted that mini-sweep, but they just put up a total wet fart of a 4th quarter, and not much we can do about that.  Missed open jumpers, missed layups, and then had a chance to cut the Boston lead to 3 with a few seconds left and instead turned it over.

Antawn Jamison played just about the worst game of his career; if he was hurt, he should have just stayed in the locker room!

But hey, down 0.10 units is a palatable day, with Memphis picking up the nice win late, and now let's move on!

GOOD LUCK ON THE REST OF YOUR PLAYS, GUYS!  I'll have tomorrow's blog up within the hour!

Let's get back after it tomorrow - weird card, so far, from what I'm seeing!

posted by guevones on 02/01/2010 8:24 PM

well, Dan, my other two plays split (Jazz under and Okla State). One of those night where i was winning all 4 at half but only won 2. keep having these .500 nights where i get bad beats. i know that's the way it goes. just ready for some of these 2-2 nights to turn to 4-0 nights.

again, good call on Mem and, as for the Celts, I think that was the right call and it wins over 55% of the time but, if you can't make any of your shots in the last 3 min you're gonna give up a lot of covers.

posted by guevones on 02/01/2010 8:28 PM

just checked out tomorrow's lines. tomorrow's gonna be one of those days where the public is actually on the big dogs. i mean, how do you look at memphis getting 10.5 at cleveland and milwaukee getting 10 at orlando and not immediately want to take those dogs. when i have my square cap on that's exactly what i see.

posted by Dan Bebe on 02/01/2010 8:28 PM

Yep, G.  Sh*t happens.  All I can really do is shrug.  Ya know, I'm not that pissed off for whatever reason - probably because I feel like if the Wizards make ONE damn play late in that game, it comes down to the wire, and they probably lose by 2-5 points.  But, what can we do?  Washington literally did NOTHING right in the 4th quarter, and I think the biggest mistake came in Flip Saunders rotation.  Caron Butler was the only thing working, and when he came out of the game, Washington really tanked.  I think they needed another shooter in the game near the end, too, and Earl Boykins is just WAY too small to play defense against the Celts, but that's how it goes.

Splits aren't good, but they aren't bad, so we'll just pick up and move forward.  Still 5-1-1 since the Thursday debacle, so the slow growth plows ahead!
