Dr. MLK Day: NBA RoundUp for 1/18

by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 1:24 AM
What a fine way to start Sunday, an easy blowout Paid Play victory with the Raptors demolishing the sluggish, disinterested Mavericks. That game went just as expected, with Toronto flexing some home court muscle, and Dallas wishing it wan't a morning game, and looking ahead to their game with the Celtics (see below).

That win moves us to 4-0 on Paid Plays since Thursday, and combined with the 3-1 Free Premium run, we are 7-1 on all Premium Plays over that same stretch. Maybe even nicer is that the last 3 games have been fairly easy covers, with the Jazz covering by 8, the Clippers by 7, and now the Raptors by ~20.

As we move into today's games, please do take a moment to note the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most influential men in modern history. And with that, let's celebrate with some NBA.

Sports Wagering

Pistons @ Knicks - This line is OFF. That's a darn shame, because this game has some fun capping angles. For one, the last time these teams played was, well, Saturday, and we all know how tough it is for two evenly matched teams to play each other in two straight games. The ol' home-and-home. The Pistons narrowly nipped the Knicks in Detroit 94-90, but I'm feeling rather confident that the Knicks will deliver Detroit their just desserts. The question, obviously, is what line we see. Detroit was just a 1-point favorite at the closing line in Motown, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the Knicks as a 4-5 point favorite here at home, where they're starting to play better. The Knicks are starting a 5-game homestand, so it is a point of slight concern that they might be suffering from a little settling-in syndrome, but I think the revenge factor should counterbalance that sluggishness. I realize both teams have won one of the meetings this year, but this revenge is just about trying to split this home-and-home. Obviously, the larger issue in this one is that the Pistons bottomed out in Chicago, and have won 3 straight games since then, and are building confidence. The impending return of Ben Gordon should give them a little more firepower, too, something they desperately need if they're going to win away from home. Despite all this, and the fact that New York has lost 4 of 5 games, I still lean Knicks - I just don't believe they let Detroit sweep a home-and-home, since the relative skill level of the two teams is too close. I also think we'll learn more about the total based on what the oddsmakers set. Both games have gone Under so far this year, despite both totals being set between 193 and 195. If we see a total over 195, I'd lean Over; otherwise, we can reassess upon release.

Blazers @ Wizards - This line is OFF, too. I would guess it's because of Brandon Roy and his injured hamstring. Here's my take on this injury situation -- if Roy plays, this game is likely a pass. If he doesn't, I might take Washington. The Blazers cleaned Orlando's clock with Roy out, as Martell Webster stepped up in a big way, but these bench players are not accustomed to shouldering that kind of load, especially on the road, and I'd be extremely hesitant about backing the Blazers when some of that injury-news adrenaline wears off. Portland hits the road here for 4 games with the Eastern Conference (Morrison plays to fade?), off a 3-2 homestand that ended with 2 straight wins. This team is still banged up, though they're slowly getting guys back, and I almost wonder if all the injuries have forced Andre Miller to "play nice", which should improve the team in the long term. Washington is coming off an impressive 10-point over the Kings, who continue to just stink on the road, but Washington impressed me with this one. They were returning home off that 2OT loss in Chicago, but mustered the energy for a much-needed confidence-boosting win, and that's why I think Washington has some value here. I generally like backing a team on the 2nd game of a "long" (4+ game) homestand, as the players seem to settle into their surroundings in that 2nd game. I lean Washington, but let's make sure we'd be getting any value at all here before doing anything with it. The Wizards have been playing a ton of Unders, Portland has been playing a ton of Overs, this total is going to be difficult to decipher.

Kings @ Bobcats - Charlotte by 6 with a total of 196.5. This one "looks" like a no-brainer, which is exactly what makes me pause. Charlotte is beating the pants off just about anyone that comes to their building, winning all 4 games on their current 6-game homestand, and covering the last 3 by a combined 46 points. Needless to say, they're rolling. The Kings are doing just the opposite, losing both games on their current 6-game road trip, and they haven't shown much to make me think they're about to snap out of it. Charlotte is undoubtedly going to be the strong public choice here, but given that there are no revenge angles, and given that Charlotte doesn't have a look-ahead spot, I'm just not sure how Charlotte loses this game. So the question is whether the Bobcats can cover. I'm inclined to think they can, though again, I'm surprised this line isn't higher. Also worth noting is that the Kings have played, get this, 7 consecutive Unders. This number seems pretty high for the Bobcats, in particular. Charlotte has been scoring at will at home, and that's why I wouldn't immediately jump on the Under, but we know they don't want to get into a track meet, and a defensive game should lead to an easy Charlotte win, cover and an Under - now we just have to hope Charlotte can control the tempo. But given that Sacramento scores 8 points less on the road, and allows 1 point less, that's a strong Under indicator right there, and not surprisingly, the Kings are 11-9 O/U at home versus 7-11 O/U on the road.

Thunder @ Hawks - Atlanta by 6 with a total of 195.5. This doesn't seem like many points for the Hawks to be laying, and it seems like the Thunder are really starting to get some respect, and as a result, this is an incredibly difficult game to cap. The Hawks are coming off that miracle win over the Suns, but how do they follow up that performance? Do they squeeze by another opponent, do they use that as a springboard, or does it have zero impact? And what of the Thunder -- coming off an easy win over the Heat at home, and 2 straight covers (and 3 of 4 covers), do they continue to play solid basketball on the road, or is Atlanta the building that gives them trouble? Well, looking back, and I realize numbers from last year aren't hugely relevant, but the Thunder have covered most of their games with the Hawks in recent history. The Hawks have won many of them, but these teams tend to play close games, and games close to the spread. Last year, these teams played to a push in their first meeting, and the Thunder covered the second game by half a point. Both games were low scoring. I'm inclined to lean to the road team getting the points just because I like how Oklahoma is playing never-quit basketball, but I'd lean to the Under more than the side. Man, this is just not a game I feel confident about, flat out. Let's move on.

Bucks @ Rockets - Houston by 6.5 with a total of 197.5. Another game where I feel like the road team is getting fewer points than I'd expect. When I see the oddsmakers seemingly baiting people into liking the home team, I immediately look at the road club and see if I can convince myself my lean is wrong. Here, the Bucks conclude a painful 6-game road trip around the Western Conference, winning just their game in Golden State thus far (1-4 SU, 2-3 ATS). The Bucks are coming off a 17-point loss in Utah on the back end of a difficult altitude back-to-back, so you have to think the public has a poor perception of this team coming off that one, and you also have to think the Bucks stand a MUCH better chance of playing good ball against the Rockets. The ultimate key to this game is Andrew Bogut. Houston tends to struggle with opposing 7-footers due to their lack of size, and this is one of those teams, the Bucks, that matches up pretty well with the Rockets. Milwaukee has skilled guards and a skilled center, but not much in between besides a handful of "6th-man"-type wingmen (Delfino, Ilyasova, Mbah a Moute, etc.), nullifying Houston's strong defensive wing players. On the Rockets side, this is a team that is struggling, but doing so quietly. They've covered just 1 of their last 7 games, but have been able to squeeze out home wins in there over the Knicks and the Wolves, and I wonder if we can't get a bit of a jump on the public by fading the Rockets for one more game. I also like the Over, as the real problem for Houston has been a porous defense that has allowed 4 of 5 opponents to break 100. The Bucks are not a great offensive team, but if they can exploit the size advantage down low, I think Bogut can have a nice game. Still, relying on the center can slow the game down, so this total is a bit of a conundrum.

Sixers @ Timberwolves - Philly by 1.5 with a total of 205.5. This is another tough game to cap because neither team is truly the value play. Allow me to elaborate. The Wolves return home off a 4-game road trip; they lost all 4 games, but went 2-2 ATS, as this team has a tendency to do. Hell, the Wolves are 8-33 SU, but 20-21 ATS, so that just goes to show how often they've been able to lose by "not that much." Still, that first game home is never an easy one, and looking back at the Wolves schedule, the only other time this team came home off a road trip of 3 or more games, they got absolutely creamed by the Clippers. It's a lot to ask of the Wolves to cover, just getting 1.5 points, when they've won just 1 of their last 10 games. Still, isn't this just the exact time when the Wolves explode out for a monster win? Minnesota is coming off a 25-point loss in Memphis, so this team won't ever look much worse to bettors. I just don't know if that's enough, given all the situational angles that do not favor them. The Sixers, by the way, are playing their best ball of the season. They've won 3 of 4, covering all 3 wins, and they've held 3 straight opponents to 93-points or less. Samuel Dalembert, surprisingly, has been great (our prayers go out to Haiti, as a side note), and Philly is starting to play with a little confidence. We should also remember this team is actually stronger on the road than at home. Philly is 6-13 at home SU (4-15 ATS), and 7-13 SU on the road (13-7 ATS), so whatever points the home team is getting here is probably about double what they should be getting against the Sixers. I simply have to lean to Philly, despite how obvious it looks, and I like the Under, with Philly's recent strong defense, and Minnesota likely to be a little sluggish in their first game home, as noted above.

Nets @ Clippers - This line is OFF. Chris Kaman is the reason for our lack of line. I made something of a pact a few days back not to make the Nets a Paid Play at any point down the line, and I don't think this game is going to make me break that promise. The Nets are just so horrible, I can't even wrap my mind around it. They are 3-36 SU on the season, but have been so unbearably bad, they're just 13-26 ATS! Usually, you can get decent value betting on the teams that the public hates, but the Nets just aren't that club. They have not shown a good bounceback ability, even off some of their biggest losses on the season - in fact, they have shown almost no pattern whatsoever, outside of just being awful. The Clippers, on the other hand, are coming off an excellent performance, but came up just a point short of beating the vastly superior Cavaliers. My concern is the obvious one - coming off that disappointing loss to a marquee opponent, will the Clippers give a rat's ass about the Nets? Amazingly, I'm inclined to believe they will - this team knows they need whatever wins they can get, as they scratch and claw their way back near the edges of the playoff picture. The Clippers are probably still smarting a bit from that blowout loss to the Lakers, and without the win over the Cavs, I believe they'll still play like they have something to prove at home. I lean square again on this game, I like the home team. I also like the Over, since the Clips seem to shoot the ball exceedingly well at home, and don't defend with much confidence. If Kaman plays, that will be an added bonus.

Spurs @ Hornets - Spurs by a point with a total of 190.5. I'll lay it out right at the beginning here, I like the Hornets. For one, New Orleans is a VERY strong home team, posting an impressive 15-3 SU home record (10-8 ATS). The issue hasn't been winning at home, it has been covering the spreads of 6 or more. Here, we don't have that problem. The Spurs carry a 1-point price tag, and I still think this older team is a little tired. This is their 5th game in 7 nights, and since they've begun to fatigue, there's been an obvious trend to the ATS loss and the Under. The Spurs have been held to 76 and 86 points the last two games, both games staying well beneath the posted totals. The Hornets have been playing some higher-scoring games, but they'll need the Spurs' help if they're going to reach 190.5, so I'm leaning Under. A few more pieces of information on why I like the Hornets -- first, revenge. The Spurs beat the Hornets by 17 in San Antonio, and New Orleans, who has historically been very good against the Spurs AT HOME, should have some added motivation to pick up a win over a tired, old team. Also, this being a divisional rivalry, I think the Hornets will want to go after the leaders. San Antonio heads home after this game, so they may be looking ahead to their own beds, and getting some quality rest. Overall, strong feelings for the Hornets, mild feelings towards the Under.

Bulls @ Warriors - A Pick 'em with a total of 218.5. Another somewhat difficult game to cap, given the circumstances. The Warriors areso outrageously undermanned that they actually had to take a technical foul in their last contest with the Bucks because a player fouled out, and they were left with only 4 viable men. How on earth are we to expect this team to compete when they can't foul, they can't substitute, and they were already among the League's middling teams, so it's not like the 5 main characters in this story can get the job done. This is a revenge game for Golden State, but at the same time, can they really play with the Bulls, or anyone for that matter, for all 48 minutes. I'm inclined to think this game goes a great deal like the Warriors' last one -- they come out of the gates strong, try to build a lead while they have some energy, then slowly watch it dwindle as fatigue sets in, and the inability to play any real defense (because there are no substitutes if a guy gets in foul trouble) takes its toll. Based on this alone, I'm inclined to lean towards the road team, just because the Bulls are surging, they've won 4 straight, and the Warriors have lost 3 in a row. I think the most interesting number on this game is the total, though, as the contest between these two teams earlier this year ended 96-91 in favor of Chicago, landing a good 27 points beneath the set mark, and yet here, the posted total, despite the Warriors shorthanded roster, is 4 points HIGHER. I lean Over, and I lean to the Bulls at full strength, starting the 7-game monster road trip with a win.

Suns @ Grizzlies - Memphis by 2 with a total of 225. Boy, could the Suns look much worse? This is another spot where I'm concerned at how easy this line looks for the Grizzlies, but am I giving the public too much credit? Obviously, the general public has loved Phoenix for a few years, and in most cases, they'll back Phoenix blind, but the Suns haven't won but one road game in the last 50 days, and now they head into Memphis fresh off getting butchered by the Bobcats, a game they lost by 26, and were at some points down more than that. It just looks way too easy to back the Grizz. Do we not think Phoenix is going to bring some measure of malice into this one? The Grizzlies beat the piss out of them in Phoenix only a few short weeks ago, a 25-point road win for Memphis, and a true embarrassment for Phoenix. There's just no way the Suns, who have been nothing short of pathetic, are going to come into Memphis and just roll over. I can't say it's going to be a popular choice, but I think Phoenix brings the heat in this one. The Grizzlies have won 3 straight, and they've been beating good teams, so I expect folks to jump on them with reckless abandon. I lean Suns, and I shudder when I say it. On the total, games between these two teams have been obscenely high scoring, and I happen to think this one is marked fairly accurately. Both previous encounters have ended in the 230's, but this one is in Memphis for the first time, where I believe both teams shoot a slightly lower percentage, and where I believe the Grizzlies slow the tempo just enough to keep the game in the low-220's.

Mavs @ Celtics - This line is OFF. Now we get to find out if Dallas's look-ahead spot yesterday in Toronto was worth all the stinking in Canada. Hey, I'm not complaining, we got a very easy winner with the Raptors, but it was clear Dallas's heart was not in that game -- the early game time, the MLK Day showdown with the Garnett-less Celtics, the recent run of poor defense; whatever it was, Dallas looked terrible. I'm inclined to believe they do a decent job of bouncing back, but how decent is the question. Boston has destroyed the Mavericks over the last 3 years, which can be interpreted 2 ways -- either the Celtics have the Mavs' number, or Dallas is going to be looking for 3 years' worth of revenge. I feel like I shouldn't trust Dallas, but those have been the exact times they've stepped up and played a huge game. Still, watching the Mavs-Raptors game from start to finish showed me that Dallas isn't defending well, and they appear to be lacking in the scoring department. Dirk Nowitzki carried them as far as he could, but it just wasn't even close to enough, as the Raptors shot over 50% from the field for most of the game. Dallas has allowed over 100 points in 4 of the last 5 games, and 98 in the other one, which, to me, makes this game look like a potential Over opportunity. Boston has had 3 days to rest after losing to Chicago at home, and I expect them to show off their energy, and get to the foul line repeatedly. I like the Celtics just by a bit, and I think the Over is in play, but don't be fooled by screwy bet% numbers, because, as our good pal Guevones told us, there are a handful of Morrison plays on the table today, and we need to be very careful when interpreting line moves.

Magic @ Lakers - Lakers by 6.5 with a total of 201.5. You want to talk about a revenge spot? How about getting to go after the team that beat you in the Finals last year. The Magic are coming off a disappointing performance in Portland, but there as almost zero chance they weren't waiting patiently for a chance to get back at the Lakers. We are going to get the Magic's best in this one, and I love taking the dog here. I especially love that the Lakers are coming off a furious beating of the Clippers, a 40-point drubbing that makes the Lakeshow look, for lack of a better expression, like the best in the League. And hell, they might very well be the best again, but it's all about motivation here, and the Magic have a ton. They want to show they made offseason improvements, they guys that were there last year want to show they deserved to win a championship, and they want to do it in LA. The Lakers, on the other hand, just want to win on National TV, but they know they're the best, and as Marco always says, "No team is as good as their best performance." The Lakers aren't going to make every shot and win by 40 again. On the contrary, if the Lakers win, I think it will be a late surge, and I highly doubt it's by over 6 points. I actually like the fact that Orlando lost their last game, too, as I think we're getting an extra point because of each team's performance in their last contest. In terms of the total, I think we'll see this one go Under - I'm expecting a playoff atmosphere style game, with tight defense, and conservative referee activity.

dan, copy and paste from my last post to yesterday's blog:

i might need to get an acct with BETUS just to play middles on JM plays. mine is still sitting at 6.5. 5 to 6.5 is a worthwhile middle in my book.

agreed, Dan. it's interesting to watch what's been happening with the lines/percentages/line movement, and is just another tool in the belt to help with capping.

so, you didn't answer my question: where did you think that the char/sac line would open? 6.5 involve preadjustment or is that about where you'd think it should be?

My mistake, G -

I thought we'd see it a tiny bit higher, maybe 7 or 7.5.  And that might actually have been where it opened at Cris or the Greek- for whatever reason some of my sites aren't loading right tonight, which is making selecting a freebie for tomorrow morning especially difficult.

Using a competitor's site I'm seing it opened at 7.5, in fact, and that it's 6.5 at ALMOST all books, but 5 at BetUS - you want to talk about a scam!?!?!

MLK DAY LEANS:

Sides: Knicks, Bucks, Hornets, Suns, Magic

Totals: Interested in the Knicks-Pistons Total, Under Sixers-Wolves, Over Bulls-Warriors

Potentially more to be added, but I'm trying to be as thorough as possible with the games going ALL DAMN DAY tomorrow!

yeah ---- i thought the 6.5 seemed a few points low, w/ public perception of char at home being so high and w/ public perception of Sac on the road being so low. i figured it would be around 8 or 8.5. we'll see what this line does tomorrow but, if all that JM money doesn't drive it anywhere then i've got to consider a play w/ the sharps on Charlotte.

As an aside, how is Sac such a different team on the road? they go from pretty good to one of the 5 worst in the league as a road team. odd.

like your knicks, hornets and magic leans. i like Mavs, depending on how that line comes out as Mavs are a good road team and i like them coming off a loss.

i want to lean hawks at home too but, OKC does have the ability to keep it close and cover even with a loss.

Same thing every year with those guys - Arco Arena is a disaster zone for visiting teams.  Sacramento just never really learns to play in tough situations, for whatever reason.  Plus, they need some damn veterans up there.

Here's what I'm thinking -

Because I can't get the lines I need, or the OPENING lines I need to make a final call, I have two choices:

Put a few free plays out now, NONE of which are Premium, or wait, hope the lines come out before I go to bed, and try to alert everyone on the planet that I have premium plays.

I'm torn.  Give me a little time - I'll decide in the next hour or so!

Well guys, I'm having all sorts of issues trying to determine the opening lines of a few of these games.

I would recommend buying Charlotte at -5 or -5.5 at BetUS, and buying Sacramento +6.5 everywhere else - hell, might as well just buy a 1-point middle for a small price.

Beyond that, though, I can't get the confirmation I need to make any plays tonight.

Tomorrow morning I'll be up at 7am pacific time to check out some lines and record the podcast, and I'll try to get some more thoughts up then.

If you have any questions, feel free to pose them overnight!

why bet on both teams??

Uplay -

That's what's known as a "middle" where you risk the vig on one bet to win both, basically.  It's a risk 10 to win 200 proposition.

A 1-point middle isn't all that impressive, so I certainly wouldn't say DEFINITELY do it, but if you think this game could end with Charlotte winning by 6, you could win both bets.

Just something that we've been discussing a little bit in this thread over the last few weeks, and something we might be able to put into action!

Love the MLK Day matinees in Atlanta and Memphis.  I know it has become an annual tradition in the ATL and I'm guessing it is the same up in Memphis. If I hadn't just moved from Atlanta I would definitely be going to that game today - great matchup and KD is phenomenal.  Here are my initial leans

OKC +6

Charlotte -6

New Orleans +1

Memphis -2

Orlando +6

3 straight against opposing conference - play road team. if there are 6 straight on road against opposing conference then games 4-6 are not a new system play.

thanks for the info - so does it mean keep chasing the team til they win a game?

bet 1 unit on game one - if they lose bet 1.5 units on game 2 - if they lose bet 3 units on game 3?

is it ats or moneyline?(assuming it is ats...)

so if an eastern conference team goes on the road and plays 3 straight western conference teams, you chase til they get a win? and vice versa?

chase for those 3 games until they get an ATS win that includes buying 3 points to your favor. so, if team x, let's say, Golden State, goes to chicago, milw, and boston, and the line is golden state +5 versus chicago, then the JM player would buy 3 points up to +8. if golden state loses by 7, JM player is a winner and the "system" play is done and you won't see a shit-ton of people and high %s on Golden St. versus milw.

if GS loses to Chi, then you play GS versus Milw the same way and so on to the third if that one loses.

there's also the issue of differing lines. JM will claim a winner if the JM play covers the best line that ever existed on any book that one day. so ... even if you're a loser because your line was 2 points off a line that existed for 5 minutes the evening before, he claims the win to pad his recordbook. so, you'll then see a lot of people still continue the chase even though JM has claimed the system  victory. so, gotta  keep in mind what best line of day was do understand if and why JM players are continuing the chase.

As far as the Morrison system goes, we need to continue to pick our spots to fade it - it's tough to play WITH the system just because we know we're losing a point or value, or more.  Playing against "A" bets is easier, at least, since the bet% numbers are screwy, but the low volume of cash doesn't generally move the line as much as the "B" and "C" bets.

DB - u make some good points about this knicks game, but i just cant pass up this many points with a team in good current form vs one that seems to be a mess right now - im jumping on the pistons +6.5 early - some interesting quotes from both teams below:

"We're having fun, we're starting to see some chemistry," said Charlie Villanueva, who had 19 points in Saturday's victory over the Knicks. "Guys are beginning to jell. We have to keep it going."

Said Rodney Stuckey: "We're playing harder, playing as a team, sharing the ball. That's pretty much it. If we come out and share the ball, help each other on defense, we give ourselves a chance to win a basketball game."

"Things change quickly," Chucky Atkins said. "One game can lead to a streak. With us, it was just important for us to get that confidence. Guys are sharing the ball. It's a lot more fun to play now."

The Knicks have hit the skids. A boiling Larry Hughes called coach Mike D'Antoni's unpredictable rotation "a joke." D'Antoni ripped the team for lacking "a desire to win" and again is confused over who to play.

D'Antoni, meanwhile, blasted the team for another awful first half.

"We had a lack of energy, lack of focus and urgency, the main guys didn't come out with any kind of desire to win," said D'Antoni. "Our playoffs are not in May. Our playoffs are now. We can't waste any games. We wasted one tonight."

"I just didn't think that the main guys that were playing came out with any kind of desire to win," he said. "There just wasn't the urgency coming out. It's just too bad that we need to learn from it, that's for sure, and find some energy out there."

Alright guys, podcast done and uploaded - let's get down to business!

I am going to make the Knicks a FREE half-unit play!  Bodog still has them at -6.5, but the adjustment to 7 is right around the corner as the sharps are pounding New York.

Grab that one immediately.  BR, I know you disagree, but it is just too stark of an angle for me to pass up with the teams going home-and-home.

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 9:10 AM

Play that Knicks game small, as the line is skyrocketing, and with every half point fritters away some of our value.  Damn podcast made it so I couldn't put the game out at -5.5, which I most certainly would have done.

posted by gcoutu_9 on 01/18/2010 9:13 AM

Now Rip Hamilton is doubtful so the line is pushed to 8.  Gonna have to pass with that big of a spread.

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 9:16 AM

Ugh, I didn't see that.  Yeah, I would recommend PASSING at -8.

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 9:18 AM

Alright, well, if you got down on -6.5 or -7, then you can middle it with +8, and that would be my recommendation.  You guys know how much I HATE a late scratch, so if you can buy off that play, I would strongly recommend it!!

Good call - halftime lines can be quite lucrative.

Okay, I know my Pro Page has the Knicks play up, but I just uploaded a MIDDLE on Pistons +8 at BetUS, so I'm sitting on a 1.5-point middle.

But you guys have seen the INJURED-PLAYER THEORY rear its head TOO MANY TIMES to get burned here, and I know it's unorthodox, but I'm hedging off that Knicks play, and hoping for a NYK 7 point win so I can hit a middle.  Still, I'd much prefer to drop the 0.05 units that it takes to hedge the bet than the 0.55 we'll drop when the Pistons cover...

No, it does not.  HOWEVER, if you handicap the game and like the Under, then seeing the reverse line move you talk about is a nice TOOL for reinforcing your play.

That is a GREAT question, and one I think I should elaborate on.

If you blindly follow reverse line movement, you will lose in the long run because you've already missed the number that the sharps liked -- instead, you're getting the number where the outfits stopped betting.  Best case, you break even.

That being said, if you handicap a game, and in this case, if you love the Under in that game, then it's definitely a nice additional note to see that sharps like the same side as you do.

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 10:56 AM

That's fine, Gonoles!

I was just saying not to take it if the line move was the ONLY reason you were going to make that play.  If you had other reasons (tempo, motivation, defense, trends, etc.), then by all means, ride that wave!!

For what it's worth, I like the Under in that game too, if I had to pick

posted by guevones on 01/18/2010 11:11 AM

having the under in this knicks game, i am regretting have the free league pass, as it's almost unbearable to watch detroit play what is commonly referred to as "defense."

i think the best that can be said abot detroit's defense is that it exists in the sense that there are five players for detroit that occupy a space on the court when the knicks are on offense.

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 11:14 AM

Hahaha, G, well said.

Let's see Detroit get back in it, and maybe I'll hit my middle on 7 points...

I realize it's after-the-fact, but those late-scratch injury games, I feel like the total has a tendency to go the opposite way than the direction it gets moved on the injury news.

So here, when Rip was announced out and the total dropped a point or two, it's just another spot to be extra-careful.

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 11:31 AM

Aaahhh, I see!

I just heard Richard Jefferson is questionable with back spasms.  I don't expect this injury news to move the line more than maybe 1 point, and I don't expect we'll see a similar "injured player theory" - he's just not important enough to the Spurs.  They can just throw Roger Mason in the lineup and still play about the same.

Wow, Thunder have really learned how to step it up!

I wouldn't mind the Hornets taking James Posey's sorry ass out of the game.

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 1:39 PM

Hotspur, to be perfectly frank, the Hornets look completely disinterested.  I would think that they will make a run in the second half, but I'm not at all liking the effort.

posted by razorback fan on 01/18/2010 1:41 PM

typical nba BS.  Hornets miraculously come back and everyone goes "oooooooo."  Hopes so......

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 1:42 PM

I'd be alright with that, Razor - Hornets look like they're a bit hung over, as G noted.

posted by Michael Lake on 01/18/2010 1:47 PM

dan, what do u think about nets under 94.5 second half....110 scored in the 1st half and they set the line that low...not to mention 1st half line was over 101 which I hit and total only 195? They gotta know something is fishy

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 1:49 PM

Lake! What's up buddy?

Well, Clippers probably won't shoot 61% again, but that line is just a TON lower.  Teams scored 47 in the second quarter, and i wasn't watching the game, but was that sort of what you'd expect the pace to be the rest of the way?

posted by Michael Lake on 01/18/2010 1:52 PM

Yea, possibly even slower because there were a lot of cheap fouls early so some touch fouls turned into free throws late. clippers came out ready to play early then once they built a lead over 10 seemed to relax....nets sorta along for the ride. Feel like that 94.5 is begging for over money at 110 in the first half

posted by Hotspur on 01/18/2010 1:53 PM

Dan...we have the chicago game on tv and it seems to be going exactly as you predicted.  GWS storming start but tiring now as chicago grind them down.  Also GWS don't seem to be able to rebound.  I waited until GWS were ten up and then took chicago on the M/L so i am hoping the rest of the scripts conforms to your earlier vision.....

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 1:54 PM

It certainly feels that way - I think the 94.5 might be pretty accurate, but I'd lean Under, too, based on what you've told me.

posted by Hotspur on 01/18/2010 1:56 PM

The only thing worse than watching this pick go up in flames is listening to these Spurs homers call the game.

Grrrr!

Alright guys, let's take a step back, at least, and note that this is STILL part of a 7-2 run on Premium plays, and a half-middle if anyone got part of that, so we're still way, way up since Thursday.  Let's not get too carried away in one set-back, as the Hornets just never woke up in this one, and that's going to happen from time to time where everything looks right, but just doesn't go as planned!

Haha, Sweet - I'm just glad to hear you missed a stinker.

These holiday games can be tough to predict, sometimes, because of the weird start times.  I'm going to get back to the drawing board and gear up for tomorrow's very short card.

You guys know I won't be dormant for long, but this one, like I said, left a bad taste in my mouth - the Hornets didn't wake up until the 4th quarter, and it was, as expected, too little too late.

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 3:02 PM

Damn, nice effort in one quarter from the Hornets - if they showed any sort of intensity in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd, we'd have this game no problem.

Thank you refs for fouling out Chris Paul.

Don't beat yourself up, G, these holiday games are often tough to call - you get subpar efforts for almost no reason other than that maybe a team has 2 guys that are superstitious about their morning routines.

Let's just suck it up and move on to tomorrow (or a potential play on the magic, hah)

I really like orlando tonite but I am only betting that if I win all 3 college games tonite so if i lose all 3-3-1 1 wins and I cash for the day. I know too many games but this is how i do it. I always keep my bets the same and it works for me. I envy u guys that can put out 1 play I could never do that. not because i like the thrill when I pressure myself into isolating 1 game I lose

Totally agree - Lebron is an attention whore, and I'm pretty sick of his crap, just trying to steal the spotlight at every opportunity.

Jon - What's up buddy??? I still like Magic and Under, but that Hornets display just kinda shook me, and I decided to wait til tomorrow to get back to betting games at "normal times of day" - the total kept bouncing back and forth, so I'd sooner play the Magic than the total!

So, yesterday, I know he played Dwayne Bryant because he's hot, VR because he's been hot, Hook because he's been hot, and so on and so forth.  I'm sad I didn't make the list despite my run, but I guess RJ was wise since I missed today!  Maybe I'll make the list tomorrow!!

Haha, Sink, I have no idea, but usually for the podcast, we try to hit on a few obscure items every day.

My best suggestion is to just pop into his daily thread and ask about a couple games, or maybe trade off asking him and SacLunch?

I know I don't mind when folks ask me about games, although I guess writing the blog you guys can kinda see how I feel about things, so I guess it's irrelevant.

But my point is that I HIGHLY doubt he'd charge a dime - knowing Mike as well as I do, I think he'd be more than happy to answer a question or two from you on a daily basis.

And in even better news, Wilmington just went on a 10-0 run!!!

posted by sinkcom on 01/18/2010 5:32 PM

yeah I know i do go in his thread but you have a way to get him to put out those little nuggets I dont mean obscure I guess they are obscure to me because I am so east coast. but he will run down the lines for an entire small conference and just fire off these facts that make my handicapping alot easier

Haha, I feel bad that I'm continuing to give Mike more things to do, but what do you think of, maybe once a week, we have a segment on the show called:

"Mike's Conference Call"

Where we just go lightening round style on a small conference, and Mike can drop a few nuggets on 3-4 games in a row?

I certainly can't ask him to do it every day, because neither one of us sleeps any more, but I bet one day a week, maybe the show with SacLunch or something...?

I still lean "Under", Sweet!  I think this game gets played with some monster intensity, and the game ends in the low 190's.

Sink - That is EXTREMELY flattering!!!  When we have these 12-game cards, these blogs take me a couple hours to type up, and I'm digging all the "fresh blood" that's shown up at Pregame lately - a lot of really smart guys (ALL OF YOU, OF COURSE!) that make every day of handicapping worthwhile!

I think, to a certain degree, Mike and I are kind of tied together - we're on the podcast, we both went Pro at the same time, so when we see the other guy winning and attracting new, smart people to Pregame, it's just really rewarding.

I'm planning on driving down to San Diego to see my partner in crime later this week, in fact.

And as for your Knicks, well, at least some of those Isiah-related contracts are slowly coming off the books!!

"Traveling Hookapedia"

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 5:44 PM

Sweet, I'm only marginally confident in that "Under" - I'm not playing it, myself, but I believe the Magic and Lakers both work an "inside-out" offense, utilizing their post presences and in effect slowing the game down a bit.  If both teams shoot close to 50% there isn't much we can do, but I think if this thing gets played at the tempo I predict, it should stay Under.

Hahaha, Sink, your response time on my tweet is beastly!  I just figured on MLK Day I should really make an effort to toss out humanitarian reminders every once in a while, even while there are basketball games from morning til night, there are so many important things going on in the world, and it's just so important that we all never lose sight of them.

UPlay -

I'm very much looking forward to talking a bit more NBA!  We're just now transitioning into roundball, and I think you'll find that most of the Tuesday-Friday shows will be pretty NBA heavy, especially the "looking back" early parts of the show, because the NBA is really about what we can learn from the previous day's games.

And without getting into too much of the gory details of broadcasting, it's REALLY important that I don't over-talk when we have a guest.  I do all the openings, closings, transitions, segues, etc., so if I start yackity yacking about games, it would immediately sound like a Bebe monologue.

When we don't have a guest on the show, and I'm sure you've heard a few of those episodes, we'll probably cover more NBA, on average, and I actually really like having a show with just Mike every once in a while.  That is NOT, I repeat, not a slight on any guest we've ever had, but sometimes it's fun to just be the two hosts, since we know each other pretty well and when I'm operating a show across the nation, it's a little easier to have only one person, too!

What's happening man?? Where'd we lose you to??

It was a very strong weekend! 2-0 Thursday, 2-1 Friday, 2-0 Saturday, 1-0 yesterday.

Lost on Hornets today, but managed to get a half-middle on the Knicks this morning to make back a little.

However, despite my success, I gotta bow to my boy Hook - I think he's won 9 straight Paid Plays.  Unreal run, and I'm just happy it's happening to my buddy!!

Coutu - I'll be pulling for that Under, as it was the podcast play this morning, but I think Orlando brings the heat, here.  Oddsmakers know that Orlando LOOKS terrible to the public right now, and this is the lowest spread the Lakers have had at home all year.  Too easy to bet LA.

Sink - I think I might watch an episode right now!

Nope - I will clearly state any Premium Releases I make, and will always recap them the next day.

The Podcast Plays are 100% independent of my Pro Plays - those are more recreational in nature

Oh, i didnt realize it was your Pod play i thought it was your freebie for the day. nvm

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 7:35 PM

The Knicks was going to be my freebie, but when Rip Hamilton got scratched, I hedged it and won a half-middle.  I knew the Knicks were going to win by a nice sum, but once Hamilton went down and the spread jumped to 8, there just wasn't any value left, and since I got the line at Knicks -6.5, I didn't think it was fair to leave that up, nor did I like the psychology of playing against a team without their best player.  If that makes sense, you're a better man than I, because I just started rambling and didn't stop.

posted by UPlay2WinDaGame on 01/18/2010 7:40 PM

Ya i 100% get it, and you were right the 8 pt spread was a push. haha(i say you still get the win since if jumped on the line you would of got the win but w/e) haha

haha, you're a kind-hearted soul, but it's just not worth it for me, ya know?  99/100 of you guys would say, "nice call on the knicks" or "nice half-middle", but there's 1/100 out there that would call me mis-leading or some crap, and I just would rather avoid drama at all costs.

I figure, as long as we're on the little hot streak, I'll just make note of the half-middle in some of my previews/recaps, and you guys will know what I'm talking about, but I won't count it in the hot streak run

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 7:45 PM

Haha, Coutu, when all is said and done, the Lakers might win by 25, but i just HATE backing a team off a 40-point win; there is just zero line value.

I wanted to give you your own reply, since I really take a lot of pride in welcoming every new face/name to this blog!

Appreciate the kind words every time I hear them, and a huge YOU'RE WELCOME!!

Bottom line is that there are just some games where the SPREAD IS RIGHT ON, and we're not getting any value.  That was the case after Rip Hamilton got scratched, and it will be the case in many other games where angles go against each other.

I truly hope you can stick around and join the core group here of NBA fanatics!  We really do all work together, as you can see from today in particular!!

Anyway, welcome again, and hope you'll stay a while!

Dan the Man - I'm thinking the NBA is the hardest sport to handicap.  I'm 2 and 2 today so need the Magic for a 3-2 day.  One of my losses was Charlotte, who were up like 25 with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter but only won by 3.  I'm starting to think that the factors we talked about a week or so ago - overall talent involved, length or the game, tendencies to relax with leads, nature of the rules, etc. - make betting the NBA the most difficult sport to win consistently on.

This is not to say that I've been losing a lot, actually I've been doing pretty good lately.  And I really enjoy following the League more than any other sport.  But I'm not so sure it is one of the more consistent ways to make money.

What do you think?

posted by guevones on 01/18/2010 9:06 PM

Dan, wondering what your thoughts are on folks overthinking games and/or outsmarting onesself. I was looking at that Memphis/Phoenix game and everything I looked to said play Memphis. short line. Memphis has just been hot as of late and Phx is a different (and not so strong) team when they're on the road. Additionally, they just haven't been playing that good of ball either at home or on the road lately. so then, I looked to the SS and nothing looked out of the ordinary. equal money on both sides and no real line movement. I read your write-up and didn't see anything you said that was overly convincing for a Phx play.

So, after all of that, I thought to myself, well, this shit looks so damn obvious that something must be up with it and I therefore just shouldn't play it.

well, the game goes just about the way i expect it to and memphis covers. i feel like i talked myself out of a good play. now, had it gone the other way i obviously would be feeling differently but, i feel like i talk myself out of plays like that pretty often. i know that some of those are sucker plays but, some of them obviously are not.

how does one distinguish between the two? or, was memphis a sucker play that just happened to come out on top as the percentages dictate?

i'm rambling ...

Powerhouse questions from two of my G's.

Geronimo -

I honestly believe that crazy games like that one will even out in the long term, and it's those games that are basically the coin-flips.  Assuming you hit 50/50 on those, and get a few easy winners, you're up over the requisite 53% we need to make money.

I think I agree with you in that the NBA is probably the hardest sport to go on a winless run in.  For instance, the 7-1 run I had going before today's loss is very strong, and something like 10-0 is probably among the longest you'll see all year.  Similarly, though, I think the NBA is very good at tempering losses.  The hot streaks and cold streaks are usually relatively short, and while it does limit the monster runs, it also eliminates the debilitating losses.  Does that make sense?

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 9:17 PM

G -

I think those games, much like the ones Geronimo referred to, will also even out.  Don't stress yourself out about skipping that play, because I definitely feel that in the long run the obvious ones will be WORSE than 50/50.

I'm honestly a little surprised at how much money books seemed to be getting on a slumping Phoenix team, in terms of the game today (so you were right, I was indeed giving the public too much credit in thinking they'd want to fade the Suns), but what about Charlotte today?  That one looked plain as day and Sacramento came back from 25, so what if you bet BOTH of the ones that seemed obvious? 1-1.

Now, I realize that Charlotte was "marquee" team in that game (despite the Morrison system), but I think both of these games are pretty similar.  A strong home team against a struggling road club.  We just need to look deeper to find the true value, so dont' get down on yourself for passing up something that looked obvious because as soon as you bet that same game tomorrow, it will lose.

posted by GeronimoDoom on 01/18/2010 9:19 PM

Guevones - I know what you mean.  I have talked myself out of many winning bets based on strange lines, line movements, or other people's opinions. I think it is important to remember that one of the books' primary goals is to get even money on both sides.  Sometimes that results in lines that one might think are shady.

Personally, I think its best to trust your gut if you like a play.  When I come across one of those circumstances that make my play look weak - strange line/movement, other people's opinions - I will bet no more than one unit on the play, and often just do a half-unit.  When those circumstances go in my favor I consider betting more than one unit.

Just wanted to give my take because I've been in that situation many times before.

haha just btw i was one of the idiots who "bet both of those games"...ha

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 9:27 PM

Uplay - I wasn't saying it was idiotic, I just think it will go 50/50 in the long run, which will slowly lose money, but shit, I'd take 1-1 today!

Geronimo - you think this is a grind, wait til we get to MLB!!  Hahaha.

Wishing I had taken my strong leans to Orlando and Under here right now.....

posted by guevones on 01/18/2010 9:30 PM

very good point, Dan. and Geronimo, I appreciate your thoughts as well. i just don't know about trusting my gut either. done that several times with women and ... well ... those didn't always turn out so well.

i will say though, Dan, I do think that there is such a thing as trying too hard to find the non-obvious play. i know you've got to watch out for vegas setting a trap (the ones that look really obvious) but, sometimes those plays that look like good plays are actually good plays.

posted by guevones on 01/18/2010 9:31 PM

well, having both orlando and the under (i don't usually play both a side and a total on the same game but i have side on 3rd and final end of 3 game rec par) that quarter just couldn't have gone much better.

posted by Dan Bebe on 01/18/2010 9:31 PM

Haha, yep, there's always a balance to strike.

For instance, today, Orlando was clearly a good play, and I avoided it because I was pissed about the Hornets loss -- BAD reason to skip a play.

However, New Orleans was a seemingly obvious play that lost, and my lean on Bucks was an extremely unpleasant choice that covered, so it's all about finding that middle ground.
